i'lO METAL PACKAGE CORPORATION, OF NEW' YORK, N'. Y., A COBPORAl-ION OF DELAWARE CONTAINER My invention relates to containers, preferably of the sheet metal type, the principal object of the invention being to provide a container adapted to hold a plurality of ob' jects such as candy or cigarettes, etc., Awhich shall be so constructed as to electively serve as an ash tray when the contents have been removed.
lA further object of the invention is the production of a container of the type specified having a removable cover provided with' means for receiving and'supporting cigars, cigarettes or pipes. A further object of the invention is the production of a container of the above type the cover of which shall be providedwith an opening through which ashes or refuse may be poured when the container' is used as an ash tray but which is normally closed by a plate of any material but preferably 'of a trans arent material such as liber glass which inter ts with the cover and which acts as a seal. When a transparent material is employed, inspection of the contents o f the container through the opening and wlthout removing the cover is possible.
Other and further objects and advantages of the Iinvention will appear from the accompanying description, the invention consisting in the novel container heremafter more particularly described and then speeled in the claims.
. In the accompanying drawings illustrating a practical embodiment of the invention: y
Fig. 1 is a front elevation (partly in section) of a container constructed in accord'- ance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of thecontaine parts beingartially broken away.
Fig. 3 is a ont elevation of the upper por'- tion of the container showing it being used as a cigar and cigarette holder after the contents have been removed.
Referring to the several -gures of the drawin 1 indicates the body of the container which may be cylindrical or of any other desired configuration. The body is provided with a bead 2 adjacent the top thereof which is adapted to provide wseat and stop for the :loweredge of a cover, to be presentl described, when the cover is ap lied to the ody.
3 indicates the top Wall o the cover which l is provided with a depending annular flange 4 having a bead 5 at itslower edge. The periphery of said flange 4 is corrugated as illustrated, for the purpose of gripping the same and said bead 5 is provided at spaced inter- 'vals with a plurality of de ressed portions brought beneath the pressed-out ridges 7 until they engage the lugs 8, said lugs acting as stops to lprevent further rotation of the cover and hold it in locked position as is obvious. I
This construction whereb the cover isdetachably secured to the lbo y is old in the art, however, and forms no part of the present invention. Asis manifest any other and suit- Y able means may be em loyed to detachably fasten the cover to the vgody The cover 3 is provided with a centrally disposed opening 9 in the top wall thereof and with a plurality ofdownwardly-pressed grooves 10 inclined towards and meeting said opening and being of a configuration adapting them to receive and support cigars,
cigarettes or a pipe. Fitting within` the cover and engaging the Ainner side of the flange 4 thereof is anannular washer 11 .preferably of a compressible material such as paper providing a seat for a removable plate 12which in the` form of the invention illustrated' is in disc form, the periphery of which also engages the inner side of-the flange 4.
Thecorrugations in the i'lange 4in a measure bite into the peripheries of the washer 11v and plate 12 and tend to retain them in The A pro er position within the cover. thic ess of the washer 11 is suchas tof7 permit the plate 12 to lie perfectly flat thereon without interference lwith the grooves 10 and thereby provide an air-tight and sealed container which obviouslyvwould not be possible if too thin a washer or no washer at all were 5 used as the plate thenwould engage the unl dersides of the inclined grooves which vary in depth throughout their length and the plate then would rock on said grooves.
The. container may be used for cigarettes 10 as illustrated in the drawings-or for other articles or commodities and I prefer to form the plate 12 of ber glass or other transparent material whereby the contents of the container may be inspected through the 15 opening 9 for display purposes. 'When the contents have been removed the container may be used as an ash tray as illustrated in Fig. 3. v
l What I claim as my invention is: A 1'. A container comprising a body and a removable cover therefor provided with an i upper wall, said cover having an opening located in `said upper wall and a groove formed in said wall for retaining an object, a washer fitting within said' cover, a plate seated on said washer and means for detach- `ably holding said cover to said body.
a 2. A container comprising aw body and a removable cover therefor provided with an upper wall, a corrugated flange on said cover, said cover having an opening located in said upper wall, a washer seated within said cover and engaging the corrugations of said flange and a plate litted on said washer and closing said opening and also engaging the corrugations of said flange.
3. A container comprising a body and a removable cover therefor provided with an upper wall, said cover having an opening in saidupper wall, a groove lin said wall for retaining an object, a washer fitted within said cover and a transparent'plate seated on said washer. y
4. A container comprising a body and a removable cover therefor provided with an upper wall, said cover having an opening extending through said upper wall, grooves formed in said wall for, retaining an object' and a removable plate in said cover normally closing said opening'but permitting said container to be used as a refuse receiver without removal of said cover after said plate has been removed therefrom.
Signed at New York, inthe county of 55 `New York and State of New York, this 10th day of Oct., A. D. 1927.
