IMPROVEMENT IN ABRASIVE PAPER FOR FINISHING THE HEELS-AND EDGES 0F BOOTS AND SHOES.

Specification forming part of. Letters Patent No. 178,994, dated J une 20, 1876; application filed February '24, 1576.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JoHN Gr. BUZZELL, of Lynn, in the county ofEssex, and in the State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Abrasive Paper for Finishing the Heels and Edges of Boots and Shoes; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification, in which Y Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved paper as prepared for sale, and Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same.

Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.

In the manufacture of boots and shoes by machinery, the edges of the heels and portions of the shanks which present concave surfaces have heretofore been finished by expensively-prepared abrasive wheels, which, requiring frequent renewal, materially increased the expense of the article being manufactured.

To obviate this difficulty is the design of my invention, which consists, as a new article of manufacture, in a strip of flexible material coated upon its outer side with abrasive substance, and having said side made convex transversely and longitudinally, substantially as and forthe purpose hereinafter specified.

In the annexed drawing, A represents a strip of paper or cloth, having, preferably, a width of about one and one-fourth inch, and any desired length. Upon the side of the strip A issecured, in the usual manner, a coating of powdered glass, sand, emery, or

ployit upon the peripheries of wheels, which.

correspond in width and convexity to the like features of said strip, the latter being first cut to the necessary length to enable it to encircle each wheel, and then secured in place by any desired means.

-By reason of the shaping of the abrasive strip before its application to a wheel, when so applied, said strip is without wrinkle. or flaw, and forms for said wheel a perfect sur-' face, that is capable of producing perfect work, and when worn out said strip can be easily and quickly removed, and a fresh strip placed in position.

Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim is- As a new article of manufacture, a strip of flexible material coated upon its outer face with abrasive substance, and having said face made convex transversely and longitudinally, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
