IMPROVEMEINTIINI OSCILLATING FURNITURE FOR VE'SSELS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,97 l, dated June 20, 1876'; application filed April 20, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY 0. SMITH, of New Haven, Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oscillating Furniture for Vessels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which 'it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of.this specification.

Myinvention relates to oscillating furniture for use on vessels; andconsists in devices by which the oscillating furniture may be readily fastened, so as to have the motion of the vessel,-and readily released, which devices are hereinafter more fully set forth.

The space,.Figure l, inclosed' by the floor or piece A, open piece B, and the parts a a a a a, is intended to represent the cabin of a. vessel.

C is a common table attached to the platform 0. d d are settees attached to the platform 0, and are arranged to accommodate guests at the table C. To the ends of the table C and platform cthe upright posts 0 c are attached, and are pivoted to the bar 00. The bar :0 is widest in the middle, straight on its lower edge, and is pivoted in the middle to a beannf, over the cabin.

The spindle 0 is provided with the crank it, and extends through the hollow posts 6 e and turns in the same. 0n the spindle o, and with-. in the hollow posts,'lines are attached to the spindle, extending to the pins m m, to which the lines are also attached.

The'pins m m are straight round rods, fit ting tightly in the posts 6 6, but free to move in the same, pointed at their lower ends and adapted to enter holes in the floor A.

()n the spindle 0 the cylindrical sleeve 10 turns, is provided with the wheel 3 and with a ratchet-wheel,z, and spring-pawl attached to the post 0.

A line is attached to the sleeve, passing through the table C and through the platform 0, over sheaves in the platform, and is then united to four lines, which are attached to staples in the floor A, the staples being arranged in lines which are at right angles to each other. I 1

In Fig. 3 a sofa or settee is shown, provided with a spindle passing through it crosswise, the spindle being furnished with a wheel for turning the same. A line is attached to the spindle, passing through the bottom of the settee, and is attached to a staple in the floor.

Thus constructed and arranged, the operation of my devices is as follows: When the pins m m are lowered into the holes in the floor, the furniture has the motion of the ves-' sel. By turning the spindle 0 by the crank n, and thus winding the lines extending to the pins on the spindle, the pins m m are withdrawn t'romthe floor, and the furniture is then held by the lines from the staples in the door,

which are united to the line extending to and winding on the sleeve 10.

By raising the pawl on the ratchet z, and

unwinding the line on the sleeve 1) by means of the wheel y, the furniture will then be free, and have the oscillating motion consequent on its suspension from the beam, as described. By reversing this operation-that is, by winding the line on the sleeve p.-the furniture is i brought to a position in which, by lowering: the pins m m, they will enter the holesin the floor, when the furniture will be held and move withthe vesseh Y I claim as my invention-- 1. 2. In a device for holding oscillating furniture, the spindle 0, having the crank it, also having lines attached, extending. through the hollow posts 6 e to the pins m m, substantially as and for the purpose described.
