Roberts, for Casement window operators, filed .A ril 23, 1927 which issued as Patent'No.v *.1, 44,341 on January 21,l 1930.k This operav tor consists essentially of the supportlng` housin 15, adapted to be secured tothe wintaining a wormv 18,*r rotatably supported' to window.`
actuate a worm gear 19'secured vto an arm 20.
- Thearm 20 carriesa slider 21 in its end which is adapted to slide inv ak guide 22 and when.
the worm 18 is` actuated b means of the hanvdle 2,3, the arm 20 isa apted to ymove the slider 21 in its guide 22 to open or close the I do not wish to limit myself to any form of operator, however, as my closure fastener maybe ators. Y
`My invention is of particular importance,
however, with an operator which is ada ted to vact upon and secure only one edge o the easement window, the closure fastener serving to insure the closure of other edges and to secure them.
VIn the embodiment shown in Figures 1 and 2, the closure fastener may include a shaft 24 rotatably supported by the closure and preferably locate adjacent the edge which has the''greatest range of movement, since the complete closure of this edge will insureclos-i ing'all aroundv thel window. v
he shaft 24 may be carried by a pair of j brackets 25 and 26 of sheet metal bent to Y wardly form kbearings for said shaft and having outto the window or other support.
The shaft 24 may beprovided at one end with a cam 28 which is preferably symmetrically formed uponv both sides as at 29 so'that it is adapted to be used on right-hand or left-hand windows.
-The cam 28 is formed with a hub 31Which a may be secured tothe shaft 24 either by pro- Y ce viding a non-circular end on saidshaft `in ay complementary aperture or by a setscrew' 32.v
The set screw hasthe advantage of permitting adjustment ofthe cam to insure complete closing under anvl condition -j of installation,
- -butiit is also possible'to so locate the brackets or shoulders against which the'cam lacts so that no adjustment is required.
strain when the lower edge ofthe windowis broughtinto yengagement with the cain 28 and the `upper army33 engages shoulderk 46 to pullthefree edge yof the window shut.
The provision of'such av torsional member enf kables mefto `do awaywith pivoted joints in employed withmany forms of operextending flanges 27, for attachmentv v28 is; engaginig VThe shaft 24 is also provided with a closn ing arm 33 consisting of a' lever having a hub 34 provided lwith a bore 35, ladapted toyreceive the shaft Y24,to which it maybe affixed in the same'manner as described for the cam 28.v The bore 35 maybe counterbored, as at 36, and thewalls of said counterbore may be cut away as at 37 `to permit access to a spring 38. w
The spring 38 may consist of a helical spring adapted to bereceived inthe counterbore 36 about theshaft24, and having .one end secured in the yslot 3 9 in the arm 33, and
the other end 'extending fromA the counter-v bore vin the cut-out 37 to engage thewindow or other fixed part. The spring 38 is, therefore, adapted to bias the shaft 24 with its cam 28 and arm33 ina clockwise direction in Iiigure 2, rotation ofthe shaft being limited by a stop 40, consisting of a pin projecting from either hub and engaging the window or other fixed part. The cam land arm are shown in this limitin position in dotted lines in Figure 2; It shoul ,also be noted that the hubs 34 and Land a bracket 42vadapted to engage the arm 33.
y These brackets may consist of sheet metal members having an att-aching fiange 43 secured lto the closure support by a plurality of screws 44, and having an upwardly extending flange 45 at substantially right angles to the attaching flange '43; VThe bracket 42,
which may be of similar structure, is attached to the closure support, in vthe present in-` stance, at thevtop ofthewindow frame with the flange 46 projecting downward in position to be-engagedV by the arm 33. The arm 33 shouldfengage on theopposite side of the flange 46 from the window 13, in such manner that counter-clockwise rotation of the shaft 24 in` Figure 2 will cause the arm to engage thefixed flange 46 andv react yagainst window frame in positiontobe engaged by the cam 28, and the location of the flange 45 should besuchthat when the lower edge of the window is completely closed and the cam the flange- 45, the yarm has engaged the ange 46 and firmly vpulled the .upper edge of the window into closed position.` The shape ofthe cam 29 may be made such that friction is greatlyy reducedl by a single point contact between the cam and i A4l f direction. VAs the closing" movement, profl gresses the relation of the parts is such that'V spring to bias it to the .position showninf the arm` 33 rota-tes in behindfthe flange 57 and ywhenthe lower edge ofthe windowhas been moved to closed position, the upper edge is also forced to 'such position'by enga-gement of the arm 33v behindV the 'flange `57. My closure 'fastener not only vforces .the remote n Y Y upperedge ofthe window intocl'osedjposi# tion, but secures it in such position as long as thewindow is secured bythe bolt 57 a.
' While I have illustrated my device with a Figure 5, many yof t-he advantages 'of my Y fastener may be realized without employing a spring, since it will be noted that when the y window; 48 is opened from'the'position yin Figure4, the flange v57 will naturally force they larm -33 counter-clockwise, moving the cam andarm to the position shown in Figure 5. When thel parts are in this position they are already disposed so that the arm 33 will automatically enter behind the flange k57 when the Window is closed and it will be evident that the devicew'ill operate without employing a,V spring. On the other hand the .spring insures thelocation of the mechanism in proper position at alltimes and is therefore included in the preferred embodiment.
Itshouldalso be noted that the linger 33 `is preferably made of greater lengthothan the cam 28 in order that theend of the finger may have a, wider range of movement `during thesame timethat thecam moves. Thus the finger moves'farther than the cam` andis adapted to take up any llag caused by .the warping ofthe window. f v
It should also be noted that .where a fastening bolt, such as is used in FigureT 6, is employed on a steel window, thekeeper 61 may be eliminated andthefend 59 ofthe bolt may` react directly against the flange which forms the lower edge ofthe window frame.
f -It willy thus be observed that I. havein vented aV closure fastener which automatically securestheupper or remote edgev of the window when the lower edge is closed and which; is adapted to prevent any warping of the window or unauthorized opening= from thenpper edge. It should also be noted that my inventionmay-be applied'to' left-hand and right-hand windows or tosingleor double n windows ory other types of "closures, and it may readily be used with any size: of window since the shaft 24 mayV be constructed of sheet metal'pipe which may be cut tothe proper length byjan ordinaryhacksaw on the J'ob. f
My closure fastener is actuated by apart of the same window on which the ',fasteneritself reacts, and the simple and effective structure describedis capable of long service without deterioration or necessity for adjustment. The torsion shaft makes the entire mechanism resilient and the fixed arms orfingers carried `by the shaft may beadjusted so as to satisfactorily close and secure .any Window vor lother closure. n v. .i Y i While I have illustrated and described a specific embodiment of my invention, many modificationsmay be made without departing from the spirit of the invention, and I ido not wish to be limited to `theprecise de.- Y
tailsl of construction .sety forth, but desire tjo avail myself ofl all .changes withinthe scope of theappended claims.
