HOWARD F. Gonstrcn AND EMIL Wicxsrnoi/r, or GALIoN, omo, Assrenonsrornn HUGHES-KEENAN co., or MANsrInLD, omo, a coarorm'rron or oHro END GATE ron DUMP *Wasoirs' on irations .Application led fApril 26,
The present inventionrelates vto an, end vOate for dump wagons or trucksand has for its principal object to provide a gate Vwhich may be converted into a chute when it is desired to empty or dump the wagon or truck. Y
' Other objects of the invention are to provide a'convertible end gate of this nature which is simple and ellicient in construction, reliable in'operation, inexpensive to manufacture, readily operated, durable, and'well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed. y Y
With the above and numerous other ob. jects in view as will appear as the description progresses, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and in the combination and arrangement A cf parts as will vbe hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawing, Y Figure 1 is an elevation of the end gate embodying our invention, showing the outer side thereof,
Figure 2 is a fragmentary detail perspective thereof, i Figure 3 is a side elevation of the gate showing the same converted into a chute, and
y Figure 4 is a detail perspective showing the bolt operating mechanism.
Y Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that there is a frame for the gate which consists of the side members 1 and the top member 2.y The sidepmembers 1 are preferably formed of angle irons while the top member 2 is in the form of a plate con-` necting the two side members 1 at their upper ends. A shaft 3 pierces the side members 1 adjacent' their upper ends and brackets 4 mounted on the top member 2 also receive this shaft. This shaft 3 is provided for mounting the device on the open end of' a wagon body (not shown) and thus the gate is pivoted from its top end so that the bottom end may be swung outwardly from the wagon. Any suitable means may be used for locking the gate in position in re-V spect to the wagon body and as such means are common in the art it has not been rthought necessary tov *here1n.f

disclose the same Asis evident from the'abovedescription the frame is open'eXcep-t for its side and top members. The opening in theframe is'y normally 'closed by a plate 6 which is constructed at its sides with :members 7- in Vthe form Vof angle irons which receive ashaft y8 which is journaled in suitable brackets 9 carried at the lower ends of the side membersl. The plate 6 is disclosed in a closed position in Figures 1 and 2 and in an open position in'Figure A pair of hinged panels 10'are disposed in the openingof' the frame A andare normally heldin a closed position such as is indicatedin Figures 1V and 2, by springhinges 11, whichare shown inthe drawing in dotted lines; andsincersuch hinges are'of conventional construction no detailed illustration ordescriptionthereiof seems necessary.V Y In order to hold the plate 6' in a closed position, a pair Aof boltsr12 are slidably mounted in openings 13 (Fig. 2) in members 7 and are adapted tolpas's through openings 14 in side members 1Q Links 15 connect these bolts 12 with the lever 16 which is actuated by Y a rod 17- and hand lever 18 pivoted on oneQof the members 7.a; Asthis mechanism is Vshown in Figure 1 it will be seen ythat by fulcruming the 'leverf '11S the Vbolts 12 may be 'withdrawnfrbmftlie'aperf tures 14 and the plate 6 maythen swing on shaft 8 to the position vdisclcsed-*in Figure 3 in which position ity will beheld by bracket members 2O (which are foldable so as to be out ofi the way when the gate is closed).
`Suitable stops 21 are provided on the plate l 6 so that when thepancls 10 are opened they will abutthese stops and be'substantia-ll'y at'right angles to the frame," thus forming" an'eficient chute through whiclithe contents ofthe wagon body may pass.v The pressure from the contents of the wagon, especially during dumping, will keep the side panelsy 10 open. i
It is thought that the operation and utili* ity of the device will be evident without a further detailed description. lle have, in
the present instance, shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention which will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, and it is to be Vunderstood that the saine is susceptible of modification inv various particulars' without departing from the'spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages. Having thus described our what we claim as new is Y l. The combination with a vehicle body,
a pair'o'if pivotally mounted side baisat one invention end' oi. the body, said bars being hinged at their upper ends to swing in vertical'planes,
a gate pivoted to said barsnear their lower ends, and means on the gate adapted to lock the gate-to the bars, and a panel hinged to each side bar inwardly of the gate to swing in a 'horizontal plane. Y
2. The combination with a vehicle'body,
a .pair of pivotally mounted Vside bars at one end of the body, said bars being hinged at their upper ends .to swing` in vertical planes, a gate pivoted to said bars near their lowerl ends, yand means on the gate adapted to loch the gate to the bars, rand a panel hinged to leach side bar inwardly of the gate to swing in a horizontal plane, said panels beingrarranged to atly engage they inner surface of the gate for being held in closed position byj the KVgate when the latter is locked to the bars.V
3, The combination with a vehicle body, a pair of pivotally mounted side bars at one end of ythe body, said bars being hinged at their upper ends to swing in verti- Y cal planes, a gate pivoted to said bars near their lower ends, and means on the gate adapted to locl the gate to the bars, and a Yframe lto swing in a= horizontal plane, a
platelliingedtothe bottom of the frame for :closingthe opening thereof, means on the plate and engageable with the frame for holding the plate in a closed position, means for supporting the plate in open position wherein it is substantially on a level. with the bottom of the dump body, said supporting means being associated with and carried by the plate and the frame, and stops on the plate ada when in open position.
5. The coiiibinationwith a pair of side bars pivotally ,niountedat their upper ends on one eiidof the body,
sloftsinvsaid bars, a gate pivoted to said bars near their lower ends, and means on the gate adapted to'entei said slots to lock the gate to tliefbars, and a panel hinged to each and a plate hinged tothe lower-end oif the a vehicle body, l
ijsaeee sidebar inwardly of the gate to swing in a horizontal plane.l 6. The combination with a vehicle body, a pair of side bars pivotally mounted at their upper ends on one end of the body, slots in said bars, agate pivoted to said. bars near their lower ends, and means on the gate adapted to enter said slots to lock the gate to the bars, and a panel hinged to each side Abar inwardly-ot` the gate to swing in 'a horizontal plane, and means to normally yieldingly swing saidpanels to closed position.
V7;- rl`he combination with a vehicle body, a pair of side bars pivotally mounted at their upper ends on one end of the body, a gate pivoted'to said bars near their lower ends, av panel hingedto each side bar inwardly of Ythe: gate to swingv in ahorizontal plane, and means on the gatev adapted to lock ythe gate to the bars.
8. An end gate of the class described including Ya frame having an opening and pivotally mounted at its upper end to swing in a vertical Y plane, and members carried by` .and movable with the traine `and posior foreiorming a chute associated therewith, said members Vembodying a panel hinged to each si de oi: rthe :traine to swing horizontally frame to swing vertically, and means tolock the plate tothe frame for maintaining the plate and the panels in position to "close the opening of the traine.
