Description

F. W. BISHOP.
ADJUSTABLE CARRIAGE 0R SLE I GH POLE. No.178,899-. Pate nted June 20,1876.

UNITED: STATES P T N 'Qrrro a FREDERICK W. BIS-HOP, F WEST HAVEN, (JONNEOTIGUT,
IMPROVEMENT IN ADJUSTABLE CARRIAGE OR SIQEIGIH POLES.
Specification forming art of Letters Patent N5. l7S,899, dated June 20, 1876; application filed March 13,1876. v I v.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that'l, FREDERICK W. BISHOP, of -West Haven, in the countyot' New Haven and State of Connecticut, have'invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carriage- Poles; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- I Figure l represents-a top view of my im-- metal, and with downwardly-projecting flanges, by which thesame maybe readily secured to the end of the carriage-pole, and also for the reception of the inner ends of the curved bars, said bars being secured to pivoted or swinging braces, and adjusted and held within the T-shape socket by a bolt and nut passing through the same and through elongated slots within the socket.
In the drawings, Arepresents the carriagepole, and Bthe stays or braces, which are pivoted at a to the plates to, said plates being bolted or otherwise secured to the pole A.
4 The curved bars 0 are preferably of wood, to
reduce as much as possible the Weight of the several parts, and are secured to the stays or braces B by suitable rivets or bolts.
The T-shaped socket D, which I deem the essential part of my invention, is formed of a single piece of metal by swaging or stamping, or maybe cast, if desired, aud,has down-.- 'wa'rdly projecting flanges b b, as illustrated in Fig. This form-of socket is capable :of being readily connected to the end of the pole A by placing it within the socket formed by the flanges b b, and securely riveting it thereto. The other portion of the socket formed by the flanges b I) receive the inner and free ends of the curved bars Q, and-are capableof being adjusted therein to bringtheir outer ends toward or from each other by screw bolt and nuts cpassing through the ends of the, same and through elongatedjslots (Z inthe socket.- The pole thereby lieiug readily adjusted and attached to any vehicle by first loosening the clamp-nuts-ot' the bars and setting the stays into the position required, after which the bolts and nuts are tightened, thus establishing the rigid connection of the bars to the pole in a strong, durable, and substain tial manner;
It will be seen that the T- shape socket is capable of being manufactured at a very trifling cost, which not only greatly lessens the expense in the manufacture of this class of devices, but makes a'much lighter and nicer finished connection between the pole and adjustable bars 0, and also materially strengthens the pole at its point of greatest strain and liability to fracture.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The T-shaped socket D,formedwith flanges b b and elongated slots at, in combination with the pole A, pivoted stays or braces B, and the arms 0, the latter being adjustable within the socket D by bolts and nuts 0, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
