Description

Jan. '13, 1931.
A E. SMALL QOUI LER OPERATING ROD BRACKET Filed March 3. 1928 Evenlok Alrlk a] h iorngy Patented Jan. 13, 1931 UNITEDTSTATES ARTHUR E. SMALL, or omoneo, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR, To UNION COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, CORPORATION OF DELAWARE COUPLER-OPERATING-ROD BRACKET Applicationj filed March 3, 1928. ,Serial No.- 258,786.
This invention relates to coupler operating devices and more particularly to removable means for retaining a revoluble operating rod in its bracket, and has for its object to 5 provide such a removable means which does bolt, nut, cotter or similar Figs. 2, 3 and 4: show the relation of the rod '7 with an improved bracket and my retaining device. j V The preferred form of'the bracket com having a slot therein forming a journal f projections 6-7 are preferably positioned adjacent the slots and are formed so as not" to interfere with the removal or replacement of the operating rod .in'the bracket.
The helical spring8 encircles the rod and is of such dimensions that when it is compressed its overall height will permit it to pass between the spaced apart projections and not interfere with the removal or replacement of the operating rod but as-soon as the pressure is released on this spring it expands so that its opposite ends'engage the spaced apart walls 23 of the bracket and a part of the spring 8 is under one or more of the projections 6-7 so that the rod cannot be removed from the bracket by a lateral movement while the spring is in released position. 7
It will be noted that in my device the oper ating rod is free to move longitudinally of itself whichmay be desirable in some types of coupler operating devices.
The accompanying drawingsillustrate the for the revoluble operating rod 5 and they I claim: 7 l i r 1. The combination of a revoluble car couplerfoperating rod, a bracket therefor having spaced apart walls, each wall provided with a slot to form a journal for said rod and a projection adjacent each slot, and a helical spring surrounding the rod be-- tween saidwalls and positioned under said PATENT orrice METAL rnomrors projections'when free, said elements so proportioned that when the spring is compressed it will clear the projections and permitthe lateral removal of the rod.
"2. The. combination of a car coupler'operating rod, a-bracket therefor, and meansto restrict the lateral movement of-the rod comprising a helical spring which when free projects under portions of the bracketbut prises spaced. apart walls 2-3, each wall.-
whichcan be compressed to permit, lateral movement of the rod." 1
' 3., The combination of a car coupler operating rod, a bracket therefor, and means to restrict the lateral'movementjof the rod though permitting longitudinal movement thereof comprising a helical spring which when free projects under portions'of the preferred form of the invention, thought it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the exact details of construev I tion shown and described, as it is obvious skilled in the art.
