IMPROVEMENT IN PEN-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,849, dated June 20, 1876; application filed November 13, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, (JADWALLADER G.
HART, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Elastic Sliding Gage for Pens, of which Lheiollowing is a specification:
' Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of my improved device, shown as applied to a penholder and pen. Fig. 2 is a detail View of the device.

The object of this invention is to furnish an improved gage or rest for attachment to a pen, to assist in bearing the weight of the writers hand, and which shall be so formed as to bring the fulcrum or point of resistance near the point of the pen, so as not to interi'ere with the free movement of the pen.'
The invention consists in the combination of the sliding tube and the elastic gage with a pen and pen-holder, as hereinafter fully described.
A represents a pen; B, a pen-holder, and O the handle, about the construction of which parts there is nothing new. D is a tube fitting upon the pen-holder B in such a way that it may he slid up and down upon it.
To the edge of the lower side of the tube D is hinged a narrow sheet-metal plate, E, the.
lower part of which is widened, and is curved somewhat, so thatit may rest and slide smoothly upon the paper near the point of the pen A. The upper part of the plate E extends up along the under side of the tube D, and its upper end is connected with the said tube by a'rulober or other spring, F. If desired, the gage E may be formed solid upon the lower end of the tube D; but in this case it must be made so thin as to have in itself the necessary elasticity. The gage E may be made of different forms, as the taste of the maker or buyer may dictate.
The gage E thus supports the weight of the writers hand and relieves the point of the pen. In using the device the tube D and the gage E can be drawn up out of the way, when dipping the pen into the iukstand, by the thumb and fingers that hold the pen, and again pushed down into place by said thumb and fingers, when the pen is withdrawn from the inlrstand, without its being necessary to use the other hand and without losing any time.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of the sliding tube D and the elastic E with a pen and pen-holder, A B, substantially as herein shown and described.
