Behind and in radial alignment with each of the die members 6,-the ring 2 is provided with a vertically extending groove 24. These --groves 24 are substantially the same width as the tongues 21 as seen in Fig. 3. The guide blocks 22, 22 are secured in the grooves 240; which occupy positions at' right angles to the groves 24 located above said tongues.
In each of the said grooves 24 located above the tongues 21 is operably mounted a double Wedge element 25. Each of these double wedge elements-25 includes a central portion 26 having an inclined face 27 which is adapted to cooperate with the inclined face 16 on the die members 6, situated adjacent said tongues 21. The wedge elements 25, 25 and 25a,25a are formed in the bottom wall 37 of a cup-shaped element 38. The cup-shaped element 88 has a threaded cavity 39 in which is located a nut 40, which engages the threads of the cavity 39, whereby the said nut 40 maybe jammed down tight against the bottom wall37 of the cup element 38. The nut 40 is also provided with a threaded aperture 41 for the reception of thethreads 42 on the wedge shank 35. 'By

In operation the base plate 1 is secured to the stationary bed of a punching or stamping machine, and the plate 45which acts" as a common carrier forsaid wedge members "'issec'ured to the m'ov'able'head ofthe matrally located opening 47 which is in axial alignment with a cavity 48 formed in the work holder'5." A work receiving opening 50 is'pro'vide'd in the work holder 5 and extends from the cavity 48 therein to the top of the said work holder, and is axially aligned with the common center from which the die memb'ers6, 6 radiate.

After the blank'has been formed,.the direction of movement of the movable head of the machine is reversed and the wedges 25, 25a a'rethereby movedupwardly in the groves 24, 24a, and by' a slight'lateral movement of thec'ompleted blank the die members 6, 6 and the halves 5a, 5a of the work holder 5 are moved sufliciently to loosen the blank relative to these members, after which the blank is withdrawnfrom underneath and a new blank inserted as above noted, after which the cycle of operations is repeated.
ll hile the drawings illustrate a device for forming star drills, it will be obvious to those familiar with theforging art that the device may be used in theformation of any other form of' fluted forged product, and while there arefour dies illustrated in the drawings any desired number of dies may be employed, alsothe die holder and'work holder I may be split into as many individual parts as; may be deemed necessary for a given article and a given number of dies.
