This invention relates to a brush, which may be used with advantage for varnishing or otherwise treating objects the surfaces of which have portions which are recessed or difficult of access, such as radiators for heating purposes, grids or the like.
The brush comprises a stock or handle, and a brush head and bristles, and has for its characteristic feature a construction inwhich the brush head and bristles are connected to the handle by means of a universal joint with means for locking it in any desired position. The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, one constructional embodiment of a brush, made according to the invention-"a flat form of brush being illustrated.

The bristles 1 are fixed by means of rivets 3 in a sheath or holder 2, which may for example be of metal, open at both extremities and having a flattened cylindrical shape, the outline of which in cross section is constituted y long straight parallel sides'31 connected by seml-circular ends 32.
Into the sheath 2 is inserted a removable base or plu 4, of metal for instance, which may be ren ered rigid therewith by means of a screw 7 passing through a smooth hole in the casing and into a screw threaded hole in the end and a nut 11 at the other.v
Between the two lugs 5-and Sis a perforated connector piece 10 through which the screw through smooth holes in two lugs 15, 16 on a cap or ferrule 13 fixed to one of the extremities of the handle 12 by nails 14. The screw bolt 17 is provided with-a head and with a nut 18 in the form of a conic frustum.
The two screw bolts 9 and 17 are perpendicular to one anotherin such a way that the sheath 2 and the cap 13 are interconnected by means of a universal joint of which all the parts lie substantially within the interior of the projected surface 40 of the sheath 2, as may be clearly. seen on inspecting Fig. 5, in which the handle 12 is supposed to be removed and will occupy the position shown in dot and dash lines. The nuts 11 and 18 moreover, when screwed home, allow for the sheath and the piece 10 to be locked at will in any adjusted positions.
By reason of thisiuniversal connection, the bristles 1 can be set into an inclined position inany plane with respect to the handle 12, thus enabling the varnishing or treatment to be easily or conveniently eflfected of surfaces which it would be diificult or impossible to varnish or treat with the use of an ordinary brush. The brush' re laces advantageously the three rigid bent rushes utilized for painting radiators By reason of its universal metallic joint, there is no risk of its breakin at the bent portion owing to too much orce being used. By removin the screw 7, the sheath 2 may be separat from the plug or, base 4, for instance for changing the bristles of the brush after wear. It also permits in addition for the bristles to be used completely.
. In some cases the sheath may not be removable but would then be formed in one with the base or plug.
Other means may be employed than those indicated for attaching the bristles 1 to the sheath 2 and the ferrule or cap 13 to the handle 12.
The mass or bundle of bristles may have a different shape to that ndicated.
What I claim is:
In a paint brush, a flat brush head having a handle also havmg a flat head, a ca 6 lugs and bolts all lying substantially bristles therein, lugs of substantially the width of the flat brush head extending therefrom in spaced positions longitudinally thereof and havin apertures therethrough,
secured to and conforming with the flat ead of the handle, lugs extending in substantial- 1 parallel positions from t e longsides of the said cap and having apertures therethrough, a connector member extending between .the said lugs and having bearing apertures at right angles to each other a j the ends thereof, and bolts extending throu h the apertures in the said lugs an also t rough the said bearing apertures .in the connector member for connecting the brush head and handle to each. other through the said connectormem'ber forming a uni versal joint between the said parts the said within the pro'ected confines of the said brush head when t e brush head is in alignment with the handle.
