Description
Jan. 6, 1931. Q. D. BIGGS l sucxmn ROD LIFTER AND. WRENCH F iled Oct. 13, 1923 Patented Jan. 6, 1931 QUINTUS n. BIGGS, or Lorine, 'rnxns SUCKER-ROD LIFTER D. wnnivcn Application filed October 13, 192". Serial 'No. 668,388.
' This invention relates to a device especially designed for lifting sucker rods of well apparatus;
An important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be employed as a wrench for rotating the rod, should it be desired to position or disconnect sucker rod sections.
Another object of the invention is to provide a lifter including a spring actauted jaw, there being provided a pivoted keeper associated with the jaw to hold the jaw normally, in its closed position.
WVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is afront elevational View of a sucker rod lifter constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view thereof.
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view of the sucker rod lifter. 7
Figure 4 is a top plan view thereof, the arms which have connection with the body portion of the lifter being shown in section.
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Figure 4:.
Figure 6 is a sectional view taken'on line 6 6 of Figure 4.
Figure 7 is a sectional view taken online 7-7 of Figure 2.
Figure 8 is a sectional view taken on line 8- 8 of Figure 1. V
Figure 9 is a sectional vicw taken on line 99 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the reference character 5 designates the body portion of the lifter which may be formed of any suitable construction and provided with a central opening indicated at 6, the
lower portion thereof being rounded at 7 to receive the usual sucker rod construction which has the upper portion thereof provlded "Vlth rectangular walls 8 providing a wrench to grip the usual squared portion of a sucker rod for rotating the same.
As shown, one of the walls surrounding the opening is inthe form of a pivoted latch member 9 which is provided with integral ears 10 tl'iat are apertnred to receive the bolt 11 on which the latch members swing. A portion ofene wall of the body 5 is cut away at 12 and provides a plurality of spaced ears 18 that cooperate with the ears 1O providing the remaining section of the hinge.
- Supported on the bolt 11, and disposed between one of theears of the member 9 and thc-ears'13 of the body portion, is a'co-iled spring indicated at l lwhich spring has one end secured in a suitable opening formedin the body portion, while the opposite end thereof extends rearwardly at 15 where the same cgmtacts with the flange 16 of the pivoted member 9 to normally urge the pivoted member to itsclosed position.
The opposite side of the body portion is cut away at 17 to provide cars 18, which ears are also formed with openings to receive the pivot pin'19 that extends through openings formed in the latch member 20. This latch member 20 is cut away as at 21 to receive the extension 22 of the pivoted member 9 for gripping the pivoted member and holding the same in its locked position.
In order that the latch member 20 will be automatic in its operation, a coiled spring 23 is provided. which spring has one end thereof extending into an opening in the latch member, the opposite end being disposed in an opening of the body portion causing certain amount of tension to be placed on the spring when thelatch member moved to its inactive position.
A finger piece 24 is formed on the pivoted member 9 to provide means to be gripped by a person operating the device, to move the pivoted member 9 to and from its active position. Formed integral with the body portion 5 are lateral shafts 25 which are dis posed in suitable openings at the ends of the arms 26, allowing the body portion 5 to pivot with respect to the arms so t at he edy p tion will assume various angles and. permit the device to be used with efliciency.
At the upper end of the arms is a swiveled link 27 to which a suitable hoisting hook or the like maybe connected'to the device, for
lifting purposes. 7
In the o1: oration-of the device, itwill be obvious that should it be desired to use the de vice as a litter, the movable member 9 is moved to its mactlve posltion, whereupon the body portion 5 may be readily positioned over the sucker rod of a Well apparatus. The
7 Should it be desired to rotate the body portion, and use the same as-a Wrench it Will be understood that the rectangular Walls of the body portion Will be moved to engage the usual squared coupling positioned on sucker rods, whereupon the squared portion and rod secured thereto Will be rotated.
I claim V A combined sucker rod litter and Wrench, comprising a body portion having a substantially large central longitudinally formed opening, square in cross section, merging into a contracted bore, the base of the opening; adjacent to the bore being curved, said body portion having a lateral cut out portion extending from the side thereof and communicating with the central opening and bore to permit the device to be moved laterally to embrace a portion of a sucker rod,
\ pivoted latch members having an extension.
the inner end of the extension being shaped to conform to the contour of the opening and bore to close the cut out portion to grip a sucker rod. v
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed mysignature.
