MORTISINGr-CHISEL.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 17,878, dated July 28, 1857.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that "I, CHRISTIAN J. HEIS- TAND, of Rapho township, Lancaster county, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Device for Mortising Heavy Timber; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in providing the chisel with an eye for the reception of a long handle, the construction andoperation of which I will proceed to describe more fully.
Figure 1 is an ordinary handle artly of wood the lower part a, of iron to t e end of which a screw is cut, (allowing a square portion the thickness of the chisel,) with a nut b. The chisels, from half to two inches in width, forming a set, are so constructed Vas to fit the same handle Fig. 1, or of any other size desirable, either with or without the side edge c, c, Figs. 2 and 3. Fig. 2 represents one of thesechisels with the handle attached,

The object gained is self evident, 1st the carpenter can steady the chisel and have a fuller sweep in striking or when struck by an assistant his hands are out of danger, while it affords a leverage that greatly facilitates the mortising, a single hole bored with an auger to commence on, is sufficient, and a mortise for a tenon cut at a great saving of time and labor, in heavy timber for building purposes.
I claim- The new article of manufacture above dei scribed consisting of a chisel with a handle placed at right angles with the cutting part for the purposes set forth.
