Description

Jan 6, 1931. I M. J. HAND 5 DANCING FIGURE Filed Jan. 30. 1929 ATTORNEY Patented Jan. 6, 1931 MICHAEL J. HAND, of new ORK; "N41 DANCING Frau-i8 1 Application filed January 30, e eastat. 336,13
, This invention relates generally to dancing figures, and has more particular reference to a novel automatic dancing figure for phonographs.
The invention has for an object the provision of a device of the class mentioned which is of simple durable construction, desirable and efficient in action, and which can be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.
The invention proposes the use of a circular cover adapted for engaging upon the record carrying disc of a phonograph, and provided with edge projections engaging as the record carrying disc turns, against a spring pressed lever arranged for transmitting a periodic blow against a vibratable member in contact with the feet of a sus pended figure for moving them. to simulate .lancing. The figure may be that of a man or a woman and has joints at the thighs, knees and ankles and at the arms for simultaneously dancing as it receives vibrations from the said vibration member.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the object and advantages there of, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth,
In the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a phonograph provided with a dancing figure according to this invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the recrd carrying disc of the phonograph, with a cover shown in sectional view engaged there- Fig. 3 is a side elevational view of the vibration portion of the device.
Fig. 4 is a horizontal, sectional View, taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view, taken on the line 55 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary side elevational view of the top portion of the abutting lever of the device.
The reference numeral 10 indicates generally a phonograph of any design or construction'liavifng atone arm 11 restable upon the record, support disc 12. A. cover consisting of a flat top 13 and vertical sides 1 4 isen- 'g agedffupfonjthe disc 12. and arranged for retating with the discjjasone unit. A plurality of jteethY15 project from thegsides 14. V 'Asinall casing 16 is attached on the top of the phonograph in proximity of the disc 12 and has an integral top vibration board'l'? adapted to vibrate when its free end is struck. A. vertical rod 18 is attached to a cross piece 1'6fof the casingle and has a bent horizontal top 19fro1nwhich a figure arranged for dancing depends. 'This figure comprises a head 20, a body 21 attached thereto, arms22 pivotallyfattachedon'the body, and legs 23 also pivotally attached on the body and formed with feet resting upon the vibration board 17. The legs areprovided with joints at theiknees and ankles. i
endsonto the base of the casing 16and has one of itsends bent forward and urged into engagement with the cover sides 14 by. an eX- pansion spring 25. The other end of the leveil 24 13 attached withya bar 26 slidably mounted .on the base of the casing 16v and having at its free ends upwardly projecting lugs 2'1 Apin 28 is attached between these lugs and passes tliru an inclined elongated opening 29 formed in a lug 3O projecting downwards frombne end of an arm 31 pivot ed as at 32 to'the sides of the casing, and having an'upwardly bentfront'end 38.
' An abutting lever 34 is hingedly mounted on' the end 33 and has a projecting stop 35 limiting its motion to a horizontal position, anda spring 36furges the lever 34 into this position; The spring 36 is of the tension type acts between the end83 and the lever 34. In operation of the device, the lever 24 is moved-Lba'ck and forth byreason of the expansionspring and the projections 15 on the cover sides 14, during the rotation of the disc 12. Themotion is transmitted to the pin 28 which moves to rock the arm 31. On the upward motion of the arm end 33, the abutting lever 34 strikes the board 17 for setting up vibrations to vibrate the feet of the figure depending from the rod portion 19, and simulating a dancing figure. On the downstroke of the arm end 33, the abutting lever idles past the board 17 due to its turning about its hinge and against the action 1 of the spring 36.
