Description

J. HEGEDUS.
SPRINGS FOR NATTRRssRs AND FURNITURE.
Patented June 13, 18776.
Alfomey.
NITED STATEs PATENT OFFICE.
JAKOB HEGEDS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF HIS RIGHT TO JACOB POLITZER, OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPRINGS FOR MATTRESSES AND FURNITURE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,770, dated June 13, 1876 application filed March 25, 1876.
To altwhom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, JAKOE HEGEDs, of the city and county of ePhiladelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Springs t'or Mattresses and Furniture Generally; and I do hereby declare the following to be a clear and exact description of the nature thereof, sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to fully understand, make, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying' drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section ot a mattress having my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is-a bottom view thereof. Fig. 4 is a side view of a detached part. Fig. 5 is a top or bottom view of one of the springs.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention has for its object the improvement in springs for mattresses and other purposes, wherein their elasticity and power ot' endurance are increased, webbing is dispensed with, side play is prevented, dust may be easily removed, moths and vermin will'ind no lodgment, noise is prevented, and expense is lessened.
Thevinvention consists o f the combination, with springs, frame, supporting-hooks, and coupling-clamps, of stiffening-clamps having coverings, against which the coils strike when there is weight on the springs. It also consists of guiding-springs at the upper ends of the coiled springs.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a frame, and B a series of coiled springs arranged therein. To the bottom part of the frame there are connected metallic hooks G, whose inner ends are attached to the bottom coils of the springs, and the several springs are coupled by means of clamps D, whose hooks engage with the bottom coils of adjacent springs, whereby the springs will be securely and steadily supported without webbing, bases, or other means. The bottom coils are also connected by clamps E, whose ends engage therewith, so as to stiften said coils and prevent their separation. A tube, F, of rubber or other elastic material, is litted over the clamps E, whereby, when the springs are depressed by weight thereon, the cils that will strike the clamps E are brought in contact with the elastic covering F, and thus all ringing of the Wire or noise of striking is prevented.
To the upper coils'of the wires and upper portion of the frame A I connect guidingsprings G, which consist of coils, one or both ot'.whose ends or stems pass within the coils,
so as to guide .the coils in their expansion and contraction, and said springs serfe to guide the upper portion of the coiled springs when weight is thereon, thus preventing side movement of said ends and increasing the elasticity of the mattress.
In order to connect the end of the wire ot' which the springs are constructed I continue the coil to a certain point, then bend it andreturn it, so thatl there will be formed a loop, H, into which the extreme end of the loop or of the return portion will be hooked, and thus the end of the wire will 'be connected to a polint of the length of the coil and securely he d.
The mattress or upholstery may be placed on top of the series of springs, thus completing the bottom for purposes of beds, chairs, and furniture requiring the same.
The several clamps may be made from pieces or clippings of the springs otherwise thrown away. It will also be seen that the bottom of the spring-frame is entirely open, so that there is left no inclosure for collection of dust and lodgment of moths and vermin, and such as might settle there can be seen and readily removed by brushing or otherwise.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, with the frame A, springs B, supporting-hooks O, and couplingclamps D, ot the sti'ening-clamps E, having coverings F, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The guiding-springs G at the upper ends of the springs B, substantially as and for the purpose set forth:
