JOSEPH \VALTERS, OF \VASHINGTON, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JESSEE BILLINGS, OFDAVIESS COUNTY, INDIANA.
BED-SPRING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 271,554, dated January30, 1883.
Application filed July 27, 1882.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH WALTERS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of \Vashington, in the countyotDaviess and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and usefullmprovementsin SpringBed-Bottoms; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a representation of a plan of a bed-bottom, showing some of my springs applied. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan View of a pair of the springs, and Fig. 4; is a side view of the same with the connecting-spiral applied. Fig. 5 is a view of the slat-securer, and Fig. 6 is a view of the connect-ing-spiral.
My invention has relation to improvements in spring bed-bottoms in which slats are used and placed in the frame of the bed at "arious intervals.
It consists in the construction and arrangement, in connection with slats of a bed, of the twin springs of helical or conical formed body,
their base-coils terminating in a loop or arm bent vertically at right angles to the said loop,
and then horizontally in the direction of the body of the springs, forming a receptacle for the slats, the upper coils centrally looped above the helix or cone, and carried horizontally transverse a sufficient distance, then longitudinally,
and forming zigzag opposite. ends, and finally carried longitudinally upon opposite sides of the springs, transversely at right angles, and terminated in an intermediate zigzag, asshown, and, in combination with said springs and slats, of the retaining-spirals having hooked arms to clamp the base-coils of the springs, and the zigzag wires or rods having hooked arms to clamp the slats, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the several parts of the drawings by letters, A A indicate the bed-springs, B the connecting-spirals, and U. the slat-securer. The body of the springs A is of ordinary construction, in the form of a double (No model.)
cone or helix, with their base-coils terminating in a hook to receive the bed-slats. These hooks have a downward vertical bend, a, and a horizontal arm, I), which passes beneath the said slats. The upper coils of the said springs are provided with a loop, 0, lying in a horizontal plane above their central openings,a
transverse straight portion, d, opposite longitudinal straight portions, 0, opposite transverse zigzag ends, g, and intermediate transverse straight arms, 2', with short opposite longitudinal arms, m, and intermediate zigzag, 0. The whole being madeintegral with the springs and lying in a horizontal plane forms a broad surface for the ticking of the bed.
The spiral B is provided at its ends with hooks F,which are adapted to engage the base- 6 coils of the twin springs above the bed-slats and hold the same securely, preventing spring off or accidental removal from the slats.
The wire or rod 0 is provided with hooked arms G, adapted to receive the bed-slats and hold thesame at any desired distance apart. This Wire 0 is also provided with a zigzag, H, which will permit expansion or contraction by the spacing of the slats.
In operation it will be seen that the loops 7 of the end zigzags of each set of springs extend within the loops of the opposite ones, and the objection is obviated of having the ticking fall between the springs.
Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim as new,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The twin springs A A, constructed,as described, with the entire upper surface on a horizontal plane, and provided with loops c,longitudinal parallel sides 6, opposite zigzag ends, 9, intermediate transverse arms, 6, and zigzag 0, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
2. The springs A A, constructed upon their upper surface asdescribed,\vith their base coils adapted to rest upon the upper surface of the slats, terminating in hooked arms a b, to operate in combination with the spiral B, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
, 3. The twin springs A A, constructed, as de- 5 scribed, with the intermediate zigzag, 0, oppo zag opposite ends, the loops of which, when placed upon the slats, extend partially within the loops of the opposite springs, in combination with the spiral Band slat-seenrerC,adaptl ed to operate substantially as and for the purposes specified.
JOSEPH WALTERS.
