It is the purpose of this invention to ina corporate in the electric system of a motor operated vehicle, a novel construction of switch, designed to render said system inoperative through the ground, so as to protect the car from catching on fire due to any disturbance in the electric system both when the car is in use and not in use; prevent unnecessary discharge of the battery until elecalso prevent theft of the'car or its use by unauthorized persons. The invention further eliminates the use of transmission switch. keys. A
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the fol,- lowing detail description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.

Referring to Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings, 10 represents aaswitch' casing including av plurality of contacts binding post 12. Pivoted upon one of these 0 contacts is the blade 13 of the switch which has a slot and pin connection 14 with the adjacent end of the sliding post 15. This post .projects from thecasing and is provided with a knob or handle 16. When the post is moved inwardly, the blade 13 is moved into engagement with the adjacent contacts 11 to close or complete the circuit 'through the electric system illustrated in Figure 3, and when the post is moved outwardly, the blade 13 is separated from the are located and corrected, and

In order to hold the post 15 immovable with the circuit open, I provide a slide 17 supported on a flange 18 within the casing 10. This slide projects through an opening in one side of the casing and is provided with a knob or button 19, whereby the slide may be conveniently actuated. The post 15 operates through an opening in the slide 17, and is provided with a notch 20 to receive the slide when the latter is moved in one direction, and thereby hold the post immovable in a given position. v
The casing 10 is preferably mounted on the frame 21 of the machine adjacent the battery 22 as illustrated in Figure 3. Leading from the binding post 12 of one of the contacts 11 is a conducting wire 23 which is attached to the negative side of the battery by a clamp 24. Leading from the adjacent 11 is a wire 25 connected with the negative side of the generator 26, while leading from the binding post 12 of the remaining contact 11 is a wire 27 terminally connected to the frame or ground as illustrated in Fi .ure 3.
In igure 3 I have illustrated a diagrammatic view of an ordinary well known electrical system for motor operated vehicles, including the device or switch constituting the subject matter of this invention. When the switch blade 13 engages the contacts 11, the circuit is completed to the various electrical devices forming art of the machine, the current flowing t rough the wire 28 from the positive side of the battery as will be readily understood. This current passes through the usual cut out 29, and as lon as the machine is being operated from the ttery, the current is returned through the wire 25 to the frame of the machine and thence through the wire 27 attached to the frame as will be readily apparent. However determined speed, thereby operating from the generator 26 instead of the battery 22, the current is returned to the battery from the system through the wire 25 above referred to. It is manifest that when the post 15 is pulled outwardly to se arate the blade 13 from the contacts 11, the circuit is broken or opened so that the machine can not be operated, and thereby provide means to accom- 5 plish the advantages claimed for the invention.
InFigure 4 I have illustrated a modified construction wherein the switch casing is indicated at 31, and the fixed contacts at 32.
The movable switch blade 33 is coniiected with the sliding ost"-34 so that it may be manually operated if desired. The free end of this blade is also-connected with a sliding core 35 operating between s aced solenoids36 l5 and 37 respectively, each aving a binding post 38 connected with a wire 39. Each of these solenoids include a switch 40 so that either maybeselectively energized. The'wire 41 leads to the positive side of the battery 20 from one of the contacts 32, while the wire 42 leads to the ground from another contact 32. The wire 43 leads from the remaining contact 32 to the negative side of the generator.
The switch is used in the same manner and 95 for the same purposes hereinabove described,
4 except that in this form of the invention the switch can be opened or closed from the drivers seat by selectively energizing the solenoids 36 and 37, through the instrumentality of the switches 40 which aremounted on the instrument board of the machine.
It is preferred to connect a grounded conductor wire 45 with the ammeter A, .and to include a preferably red ,pilot lam 46 in this'conductor for the purpose of in icating the condition of the protective device.

A switch comprising a casing, a plurality of contacts rising from the bottom thereof, binding posts depending from said contacts,
\ a movable blade element pivoted on one of o said contacts, a post slidable through the casing and connected with said blade for moving the latter into and out of engagement with the other of said contacts, said post having a notch therein, a slide sup- 5 ported within the casing and slotted to receive said post, and means for operating the slide to move the latter within the notch to hold the post against movement in agiven position. v
