IMPROVEMENT IN SWEAT-BANDS FOR HATS AND CAPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,689, datedJune 13, 1876; application filed August 25, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMEs W. VALENTINE, a resident of 'the city of New, Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Sweat-Bands for Hats and Caps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and correct description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification. I
The nature of my invention consists in the production of a new article of manufactureviz., a sweat-band for hats and caps, consisting of a band provided at its lower edge with a spring and a supplemental band or lining,
said sweat-band being attached to the hat by suitable carrying-tastenings, as will be hereinafter more fully'dcscribed.
For a better understanding of my invention reference must be had to the accompanying drawing, whereon- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my im-' proved lining as when ready to be applied to hats. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the kind of metal fastening which I use for securing my improved lining to hats or caps.

These linings are secured to hats by means of a metal fastenings y, such as is shown at Fig. 2, by inserting the pointed ends of the same, from the inner side of the lining B, through the said liningand hat, over the outer surface of which they are bent back from each other,
to be afterward hidden by a ribbon or band, applied in the usual manner.
Thus it will be seen that my improved lining can be readily applied by any person of ordinary intelligence, and that its use will effectually preservehats or caps from perspiration, causing the same to last for a much longer period of time than if supplied with any other lining of which I have any knowledge.
