Description

Dec. 30, 1930. R. ALTHAUSEN GAS ING RIPPER Filed Feb. 4. 1929 TTOANEY Patented Dec. 30, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ROBERT ALTHAUSEN, OF RANGER, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR TO THE EUREKA TOOL COMPANY, OF AUGUSTA, KANSAS, A CORPORATION OF KANSAS CASING RIPPER Application filed February 4, 1929.
This invention relates to oil well casing rippers and it contemplates a novel casing ripper which is capable of serving as an up ripper.
The novelty of the invention will be understood by reference to the following description in connection with the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view through an oil well casing showing the casing ripper partly in elevation and partly in section and Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the ripping tool in retractedposition.
The casing ripper is illustrated as comprising an elongated body portion 1 having a shank 2 at its upper end by means of which it may be secured to the suspending means in any convenient manner. The body 1 is provided with an elongated vertical slot 22. At the lower end or head 26 of the body 1 is a vertical opening 27 in which is. a bolt 28 having a tripping knob 29 at its lower end outside the head. The bolt is provided with a cut-away portion 30 to provide a flat face against which a transverse pin 31 in the head 26 bears to prevent the bolt from turning so as to always present the notch 32 in line with a spring-actuated latch bolt 33 transversally located in the head 26, normally out of engagement with the notch 32 so that the weight of the knob will hold the bolt 28 in retracted position as shown in Figure 1. The bolt or pin 5 pivotally supports the cutter 6. The pin 16 in hole 35 supports one end of the spring 17 so that the free end of the spring 17 bears against one end of the cutter 6 to urge the toe 8 into cutting position.
If the device is to be used as an up ripper, it is lowered into the casing until it reaches the proper point in the casing, when it is pulled in an upward direction and being urged by the spring 17 into cutting engagement with the casing, it will rip the casing as shown in Figure 1. hen the proper cutting has been accomplished, the tool is lowered in the well until the foot or knob 29 contacts with the bottom of the well or other obstruction to push the inclined end 36 of the retractor bolt 28 against the lower edge of the cutter 6 to one side of the pivot 5 to Serial No. 337 ,279.
retract it within the tool body as shown in Figure 2. When the bolt 28 moves to full tool retracting position, the detent or latch bolt 33 will move into the notch 32 to hold the bolt 28 in the position shown in Figure 2 with the cutter 6 out of cutting position so that the ripper can be withdrawn.
I do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction shown but reserve the right to make changes in form, proportion and minor details of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 2- 1. A casing ripper comprising an elongated slotted body member, an eccentrically pivoted cutter in the body member having a cutting portion projectable through the slot, a spring for normally urging the cutter into cutting engagement, a bolt projectable into the end of the slot to retract the cutter within the slot and a latch bolt for holding the firstnamed bolt in cutter retracting position.
2. A casing ripper comprising an elongated slotted body member, an eccentrically pivoted cutter in the body member having a cutting portion projectable through the slot, a spring for normally urging the cutter into cutting engagement, a bolt projectable into the end of the slot to retract the cutter within the slot, a latch bolt for holding the first named bolt in cutter retracting position, means for holding the first named bolt against rotation and means outside the elongated body for actuating the first named bolt.
3. A casing ripper comprising an el0n gated body having a slot. a cutting tool having a portion movable into and out of the slot, means for normally. urging the cutting tool outside the slot, a cutting tool retracting bolt slidable longitudinally in the body member and a latch bolt for holding the first named bolt in tool retracting position.
In testimony whereof I alfix my signature.
