Referring more particularly to the drawings,-A designates a motor which, for. the
purpose'of this invention, is illustrated as a rock drill mounted slidably on a support B illustrated as being a rock drill shell: The motor A comprises the usual cylinder C wherein is disposed a reciprocatory hammer piston D to deliver blows ofimpact against a working implement (notshown).
The support or shell B has the usual guideways E to slidably receive ribs F carried by the cylinder C of the motor. i
" The cylinder 0 may lie-provided with the usual back head G which may be clamped to the cylinder O by means ofside rods H disposed on opposite sides of the cylinder in a well known manner. The backhead G serves as a housing for a throttle valve 'J whereby the admission of pressure fluid into the motor may be controlled and the distribution of pressure fluid to the ends of the cylinder may be effected by any suitable and well lmowndistributing valve (not shown).
In accordancewitli the present invention,
means are provided for enabling the motor A to be moving longitudinally of the support B by the ar resulting upon the reversal of the hammer piston D. To this end an internally threaded nut K is disposed within a bore L of lug 0 carried by the motor A. At the front end of the nut K is a flange P which is adapted to seat against the lug O, and the r rear end of the nut K is externally threaded and extends rearwardly of the lug O to receive: a nut Q whereby the nut K he fixedly clamped in position. 1
Extending through the nut K is a screw R having threads S preferably of a fast pitch to engage the threads in the nut K. The front end of the screw S may be supported in any suitable manner by the corresponding end of the support B. The rear end of the screw S is in this instance supported by a cross head T which forms a bearing for the screw S and which in turn is supported by standards U in the form of bolts connected to the support B and having sleeves V disposed thereon to act as spacers for holding the cross head T in spaced relation with respect to the rear end of the support 13.
The connection between the nut K and the screw S and the pitch of the threads of these elements are such that when the motor A is moved longitudinally of its support, the screw S will be freely rotated by the motor in either a right or left hand direction, depending upon the direction in which it is desired to move the motor.

Near the opposite ends of the casing I) are formed bores 7' to act uides for plungers g which are adapted to act as abntinents for the teeth Z of the ratchet W. The plungers and thereforethe bores 7 may be of any suitable cross sectional form. In the outer portions of the bores f are disposed springs it which bear against the plungers g with one end and with their other ends against plugs j threaded into the outer ends of the bores f.
In order to enable the plungers g to be selectively moved into and out of the path of the teeth Z, said plungers are provided with oblong slots 72 to receive eccentrically disposed portions 0 of a rod 2). The portions 0 are offset with respect to each other so that when one nlun 'er is in the enga in position the l r, r; n i a other plunger 1 will be removed from the path of the teeth Z. The rod 27 may be suitably journalled in the casing b and is provided with a sntiable gripping portion Q whereby it may be manually rotated.
Preferably the opposite end of the rod 72 projects beyond the casing Z), and said end is threaded to receive a nut 7 which acts as a seat for one end of a spring 8 interposed between the nut r and the casing Z) to resist tree rotation of the rod 2).
Suitable braking means may be provided to retard the rotary movement of the screw S. The means for this purpose comprises a brake t which is pivoted on a bolt a threaded into the cross head T, having a shoe portion o adapted to bear against: a flange 10 carried by the screw The brake t may be provided with a suitable lever 02 against which pressure may be manually applied to press the shoe o against the flange 10.
The operation of the device is as follows: Let it be assumed that the motor A is in operation so that the hammer piston D is reciprocating rapidly within the cylinder C to deliver its blow to any suitable working implement, such as a drill steel. When the motor A is being thus utilized. it is, of course, essential that it be actuated longitudinally of its support 3 in the direction of the work so hat the full force of the hammer piston may efiectiv v applied to the working implement to drive it into the work.
In order to constantly assure this position of the motor with respectto its working implement the rod p may be manipulated so that one of the plungers g, in this instance the plunger 9 adjacent the gripping portion 1, will be moved into the path of the teeth Z of the ratchet TV. In this position of the rod 39 the other plunger y will of course be removed from the path of the teeth Z. When the piston D then moves forwardly to deliver its blow against the working implement, a 3' ar will be imparted to the motor A due to the act of reversal of the piston and the motor A vill be bodily advanced along the support B for a distance corresponding approximately to th degree of penetration of the working implement into the work. This movement of the motor A will cause the screw S to describe a partial revolution, and the engaging plunger will then be moved out of the path of the teeth 7] by the pressure of the teeth against the front end of said plunger.
Upon the return stroke of the piston D a similar jar will be imparted to the motor A. The motor A will, however, be prevented from recoiling on the support B by the teeth Z, one oi which will. then bear against the side of the engaging plunger g. From this point on the cycle of operations may be repeated, and upon each forward stroke of the hammer pis ton D, the motor A will be advanced somewhat along the support.
After the motor A has traveled the required distance on the support- B and it is again desired to return said motor to its initial position preparatory to another operation, the hammer piston D may be permitted to continue operating and the rod 79 is rotated to move the previously engaging plunger to the releasing position and the other plunger 5 to the engaging position. In the new positions of the plnngers g the screw S will be held immovable and thus prevent recoil of the motor A in a forward direction when the piston D reverses at the end of its forward stroke, and upon reversal of the piston at the end of its rearward stroke, the screw S is free to rotate. The motor A will then be rapidly actuated in a rearward direction by the action of the piston D.
lVhenever the motor and therefore the support B are placed in a vertical position so that the motor, due to its own weight, would otherwise tend to move rapidly downward along the support B, pressure may be applied to the lever X and in this way the brake shoe o may be pressed against the flange w to retard the movement of the screw S and in this manner control the speed of the motor along its support.
Vi e claim:
1. In a feeding device, the combination with a motor and a support whereon said moi of which members is adapted to be rotated by the motor upon movement thereof on the support, and stop means forselectively controlling the direction of rotation of the rotatable member to enable the motor to beadvanced and retracted with respect to the support by the piston. In a feeding device, the combination with a motor and a support whereon said motor is slidably mounted, a reciprocatory hammer piston in the motor imparting jars thereto for moving the motor longitudinally of the support, a recoil resistance means for the motor operatively connected to the motor and the support and comprising a pair of members in threaded engagement with each other and one of which members is adapted to be ro tated in either direction by the motor upon movement thereof on the support, a toothed ratchet carried by the rotatable member, and means forming an abutment for the teeth on the ratchet to hold the rotatable member immovable and thus prevent recoil of the motor 3. In a feeding device, the combination with a motor and a support whereon said motor is slidably :mounted, a reciprocatory hammer piston in the motor impartr wars thereto for moving the motor longitudinally of the support, of recoil resistance means for the motor operatively connected to the motor and the support and comprising a pair of members in threaded engagement with each other and one of which members is adapted to be rotated in either direction by the motor upon movement thereof on the support, a toothed ratchet carried by the rotatable member, a pair of spring pressed plunger-s to form abutments for the teeth on the ratchet to hold the rotatable member stationary and thus prevent recoil of the motor at the instant of reversal of the piston, and means for selectively moving the plungers into and out of the path of the teeth.

In a feeding device, the combination with a motor and a support whereon said motor is slidably mounted, a reciprocatory hammer piston in the motor imparting jars thereto for moving the motor longitudinally of the support, of recoil resistance means for the motor operatively connected to the motor and the support and comprising a pair of members in threaded engagement with each other and one of which member is adapted to be rotated in either direction by the motor upon movement thereof on the support, a toothed ratchet carried by the rotatale member, a pair of spring pressed plungers to form abutments for the teeth on the ratchet to hold the rotatable member stationary and thus prevent recoil of the motor at the instant of reversal of the piston, means for selectively moving the plungers into and out of the path of the teeth, and brake means adapted to act on the rotatable member to retard rotation thereof.

In a feeding device, the combination with a motor and a support whereon said motor is slidably mounted, a reciprocatory hammer piston in the motor imparting jars thereto for moving the motor longitudinally of the support, of a threaded nut afiixed to the motor, a screw in threaded engagement with the nut and being supported at its ends by the support, said screw being rotated by the motor upon movement of the motor relatively to the support, atoothed ratchet affixed to the screw, a casing, a pair of spring pressed plungers in the casing to form abutments for the teeth on the ratchet to hold the screw stationary and thus prevent recoil of the motor upon reversal of the piston at the end of a stroke in one direction and to release the ratchet for permitting the motor to be actuated relatively to the shell by the piston upon reversal of the piston at the end of its opposite stroke, a rod, eccentrically disposed portions on the rod for simultaneously moving one plunger into and the other plunger out of the path of the teeth. thereby permitting the screw to be rotated in only one direction and the motor to be actuated only in one direction on the support during each complete cycle of operation of the piston, and a manually operable brake adapted to act on the screw for selectively retarding rotation thereof.
