An object of this invention is to provide an improved. mining I machine of the, wheel mounted type wherein the mining machine is adapted to insert a shear cut in the. coal face while guided on the mine trackway. Still another object of this invention is to provide an improved shearing machine adapted to cut kerfs in a vertical plane in the face of the coal. Still another object of this invention is to provide an improved wheel mounted shearingmachine of thepivoted cutter bar type having improved means for swinging the cutter bar, and improved means for looking the cutter bar in its adjusted position. Astill further object of this invention is to :0 provide an improved shearing machine of the self-propelled truck mounted type wherein improved means are provided for propelling the truck along the mine trackway during the cutting and transport operations. These and other objects of my invention will, however, subsequently more fully appear.

Inthis illustrative embodiment of my invention Thave shown a truck framel mounted on wheels 2 adapted to move relative to a mine trackway 3 in the usual manner. The truck frame 1 comprises parallel. longitudi na lly extending angle members at which have fixed. thereupon a self-contained mining machine generally designated 5, herein preferably of the so-called long wall type normally slidable on its own bottom on a mine bottom and having a generally rectangular elongated machine frame (idisposed on its edge or side with its bottom plate 7 disposed in a vertical plane. The mining machine 5 is rigidly secured to the truck frame 1 by means of angle members 8 secured as by screws respectively to the angle members 4 and the machine frame. Further, the machine is provided with an elongated plane cutter bar 9 about which a cutter bit carrying cutter chain 10 adaptedv to be circulated, the cutter chain being driven by means of a usual drive sprocket 11 as clearly shown in Fig; 4. The cutter chain drive sprocket 11 is disposed at the front end of the machineframe 6 and is rotatable about a: horizontal axis extending transversely of the machine frame in a well known manner. As shown, the cutter bar 9 is pivoted, as at 12, on an axis coincident with the axis of the cutter chain sprocket 11 and is journaled on a bearing member 13 secured as by rivets 14 to the vertical plate 7. A usual electric cable reel 15 is suitably'supported on the rear end of a truck frame 1 and power medium is adapted to be transmitted to the motor of the miningmachine through conductor cables 16 and 17 leading respectively to the reel and the mining machine driving motor, not shown. The motor is herein preferably of the usual reversible electric type andthis'motor is adapted to drive the cutter chain sprocket 1'1, theimproved means for swingingthe bar about; its pivot, and the improved means for drivingthe truck wheels as hereinafter more fully described.
In specifically describing the improved mechanism itwill herein be observed that the rear end, of the; horizontally disposed longi-.
tndinally extendingarmature shaft 18 of the driving motor has secured thereto a spur pinion 19 (see Fig. 3) which meshes with a larger spur gear 20 rotatable on a parallel axis and disposed in the same horizontal plane the a. of the pinion 19. As shown, this gear 20 turn has suitably secured thereto a bevel pinion 21 which meshes with a larger bevel gear 22 rotatable in a vertical plane, and this gear is suitably secured by a spline 28 to a main driving shaft 24 disposed on a horizontal axis extending transversely of the machine. The shaft 24 is adapted to drive suitable gearing substantially similar to that described in my prior Patent No. 1,470,570, patented Oct. 9, 1923, and which includes a suitable friction (not shown) and a spur gear 25 suitably secured to a sleeve 26 jourualed upon a stud 27, the latter being disposed on a horizontal axis extending transversely of the machine frame and disposed parallel with and in the rear of the main driving shaft 24. The sleeve 26 has secured thereto a chain feed sprocket 28 rotatable in a vertical plane and this feed sprocket is adapted to be driven through the transmission means, clearly described in the patentmentioned above, at a fast speed in one direction or at a slow speed in the opposite direction under the control of means including suitable manually operable levers 29 and 29 in the usual manner, as is likewise described in the above mentioned patent. In accordance with this invention the chain sprocket 28 cooperates with an endless flexible feed or drive member 30 herein preferably in the form of a loose link chain. Suitable guide sheaves or sprockets 31, 32 and 33 are provided which are rotatable-oil spaced horizontal axes parallel with the axis of the chain sprocl-ict 28 and these sheaves guide the chain 30 relative to the drive sprocket 28. As illustrated, the chain 30 passes upwardly around the sprocket 28 and around the upper tinide sheave 31 and then forwardly longitnuina'ly of the machine and around a guide sheave or sprocket 34 rotatable on a horizontal traiisversely extending pin 35 carried by a radially extending arm 36, in turn carried by a member 37, the latter being rotatably mounted, as at 38, on a bearing sleeve secured as by the rivets 14 to the plate 7. The member 37 is preferably composed of two parts rigidly secured together by screws 4-0 and one of these parts is bent outwardly. as 41, at its forward end and is secured as by bolts 42 to a lateral projection formed integral with the cutter bar 9 (see Fig. 4). The chain 30 passes around the guide sprocket 84 and then extends rearwardly around a driving sprocket 44 (see Fig. 3) disposed co axially with and journaled on the main drivingshaft 24. The sprocket-44 isv adapted to be driven from the chain sprocket 28 in an improved manner to be hereinafter described.
The chain 30 passes from beneath the sprocket 44 forwardly around a guide sprocket 45, similar to the sprocket 34, rotatable on a transversely disposed horizontal pin 46 like wise carried by a radial arm formed on the two-part member 37 and this pin 46 is diametrically disposed with respect to the pin 35 and the bar pivot 12. The chain 80 then passes rearwardly beneath the axles of the truck wheels 2 and around the lower guide sheave 33 and hence upwardly around the central guide sheave 32, the chain 30 extending from the guide sheave 32 below and around the chain sprocket28. From the foregoing description it will be evident that when the drive sprocket 28 is driven in one direction the cutter bar 9 may be swung upwardly about its pivot 12 ata fast speed and that when the direction of the drive sprocket 28 is reversed the cutter bar may be swung (lOWll.- wardly at a slow or cutting speed, the swinging movement of the bar being effected by means of the endless chain 30 and suitable connections hereinafter described.
The main driving shaft 24 is provided with a reduced extension 47 projecting laterally from the machine frame 5 (see Fig. and this extension has secured thereto as by a spline 48 a clutch member 49 having suitable jaw clutch teeth 50. The chain sprocket 44 is likewise provided with suitable j aw clutch teeth 51 oppositely disposed with respect to the jaw clutch teeth 50. In thisinstance journalcd on a sleeve 52 supported on the extension 47 is a chain sprocket 53 splined, as at 54, to oppositely disposed clutch members or sleeves 55 and 56. lVIoreover, the clutch members 55 and. 56 are provided with suitable jaw clutch teeth which are adapted to selectively cooperate with the teeth 51 and formed on the sprocket 44 and the clutch member 49 respectively. It will herein be observed that a shipper member 57 cooperates with the radial flanges of the sleeves 21114, 56 and this shipper member is suitably secured as by a pin 58 to a horizontally disposed transversely extending operating shaft or rod the latter being splined, as at 60, in operative sliding relation with a combined bracket and chain guard 61, the latter being secured by screws 62 to the plate 7. As illustrated, the outer end of the non-rotatable shaft or rod 59 is provided with a. suitable grasping handle 63 which is adapted to he held in a plurality of operative posit-ions by means of a spring pressed plunger 64, the latter being adapted to cooperate with spaced apertures 65 formed in a portion of the bracket 61. A chain 66 cooperates with the sprocket 53 and a similar sprocket 67 (see Fig. 6) splined, as at 68, to a transversely extending horizontal shaft 69v journaled at one end in roller. bearings 70 suitably carlOO ried by oneof the angle members 4 and at the other end thereof in ball bearings 71 carried within a. suitable supporting bracket 72 secured, as by screws 7 3, to the side of a gear casing 74, the latter being suitably supported at the rear end oi" the truck frame 1. Secured as by a key 75 to the inner end of the shaft 69 is a bevel gear 7 6 rotatablein a vertical plane and meshing with this bevel gear is an intermediate bevel pinion or idler 77 journa led on a bearing sleeve carried by a stub shaft 78 rigidly secured, as by a bolt connection 79, to the gear easing 7 Meshing with the bevel pinion 77 is a bevel gear 80 similar to the bevel gear 76 butrotatable in an opposite direction. The bevel gear 80 is journaled on a bearing sleeve 81 supported by a sleeve-like portion 82 formed integral with a; clutch housing 88, the latter being suitably journaled on a shaft 8% disposed coaxially with the shaft '69 and journaled at its outer end in roller bearings 85 carried by one of the angle members t and journaled at its inner end in a bearing sleeve 86 suitably carried within the shaft 69. As shown, the shafts 69 and 84 areheld. against axial separation by means of a suitable interlocking connection 87 and a cooperating bolt 88 extending coaxially through the shaft 69 and having at its outer end an adjustable nut. In accordance with this invention cooperating with the inner periphery of the clutch housing83 are trictionally lined clutch shoes89 connected through toggle links 90 to an axinliy movable actuating member 91 slidably mounted on the shaft 84;. Cooperating with the member 91 is a clutch actuating member 92 with which a shipper lever 93 of suitable form cooperates. The shipper lever 93 is adapted to be operatedby means of a suitable actuating rod 9% (see Fig. 2) ope'ratively con nected to a pivoted operating lever 95. Inv a 'ain referring to Figure 6 it will be observed. that splined, as at 96, to the shaft 8 1 is a spider member 97 having suitable radially extending arms 98 which are interlocked with the clutch shoes 89 in a well known manner. It will be evident that when the operator suitably manipulates the lever 95, the member 92 and consequently themember 91 may be slid axially of the shaft 8 1, thus causing the toggie links 90 to radially expand the clutch shoes 89, thereby irictionally connecting the clutch housing 83 with the member 97 and thereby eti'ecting rotation. of the shaft 8%. It will also be evident that upon suitable slippage of the clutch slices 89 the speed of rotation of the shaft 8% may be varied will. As shown, splined as at 99 to tl'ie or. 2r end of the shaft 8 1 is a sprocket 100 which in turn drives, through chain and sprocket connections 101 and 102, the truck wheels 2. Splinedas at 103 to the sleeve like portion 82 of the clutch housing 83 is an axially slidabic clutch element 10 1 having oppositely disposed clutch teeth which are adapted to se lectively engageapertures 105,106 formed .being adapted to cooperate with en respectively in the reverse bevels 76 and 89. Cooperating with the'clutch member 10 1- is a shipper yoke 107 keyed to a vertically disposed shaft 108 suitably journaled u thin the gear housing 7 a. Suitably secured to the upper end of the shaft 108 is an operating lever 109' and this lever is adapted to be held in its different adjusted positions by means of a spring pressed plunger 10, the i spaced apertures formed within an neut 111 suitably secured to the truck frame 1. T he clutch housing 83 is externally grooved, as at 112, and cooperating with the groove is a belt connection 1.13 which is connected to a pulley 114 secured to the cable reel 15 and this belt constitutes a driving connection for the latter during truck movement. From the foregoing description it will be evident that by throwing the clutch shipper 57 and consequently the jaw clutch teeth formed on the sleeve member 55 into engagement with the jaw clutch teeth 51 formed on the chain sprocket 14, the sprocket and hence the reverse bevels 76 and '80 may be driven, by means of the chain 30 and the chain sprocket 28, at a slow speed in one direction and at a fast speedin the opposite direction. Further, by throwing the shipper 57 in opposite direction and consequently the clutch teeth formed on the sleeve member 56 into engagement with the jaw clutch teeth 50 formed on the clutch member 19, the sprocket 53 and consequently the reverse bevels 76 and 80 may be d -iven directly from the shaft 2 1 at a still faster speed. It will also be evident that when the clutch member 19% is suitably actuated and when the clutch including the housing 83 is applied the truck wheels 2 may be driven in opposite directions at a slow speed, at a fast speed, or at a higher or transport speed.
In specifically describing the improved bar locking means, it will be noted that formed on the pin 35 and carried by the radial arm 36 is a threaded extension 115 with which a threaded nut 116 cooperates. The nut 116 engages at its inner end a disk 117 having serrations formed on its inner face and this disk is adapted to engage a link 118 pivotally connected, as at 119, to a siutiporting bracket 120" suitably secured to the plate 7 of the machine frame.- As shown. the link 118 is centrally slotted, as-at 121, throughout a substantial portion'of itslength and the extension 115 of the, pin 35 extends through this slot as clearly shown in F f1. lln'iproved means are provided for rotating the nut 116 and such means comprises a ratchet member 122 splined, as at 123, to the nut 116. Cooperating with the ratchct'member 122 is a reversible pawl 124; suitably keyed to a shaft 125, the outer end of which has suitably secured thereto an operating lever 126. The shaft 125' is rota-tably mounted on an elonill gated lever 127. It will herein be noted that the rear axle of the truck wheels 2 has suitably secured thereto a friction braking device generally designated. 128 which is adapted to be op erated through suitable connections 129 and 130 by means of a lever 131 pivoted in a suitable manner upon the truck frame 1'. This braking device 128 is adapted to control the movement of the machine at certain times during the cutting operation and the movement of the machine relative to the trackway of a steep gradient.
In the operation of this improved shearing machine, it will herein be noted that when the machine moving about the mine at a fast or transport speed, the sprocket 53 is thrown into driving relation with the clutch member 4-9 secureo to the extension 17 of the main driving shaft 2 1, it being understood that the clutch member 104; is connected to the bevel gear 76 and that the clutch shoes are in tigut frictional engagement with the clutch housing 83. hen the clutch member 104- shifted into engagement with the reverse bevel gear 80, it is obvious that the truck may be driven at a fast or transport waved in the opposite direction. When the machine is disposed adjacent the coal face, the driving sprocket 53 is engaged with the chain sprocl l. min the clutch member 10 1 is tl rown into engagement with the bevel gear 76, the clutch shoes 89 tightly applied, and the braking device 128 is set, thereby preventing rotation of the truck wheels and consequently the sprocket 14:. The drive sprocket 28 is rotated at a fast speed in a countercloelnvise direction under the control of the lever 2?), drawing in the chain 30 between the sprocket 28 and the sprocket 44, which is prevented from rotating, and the "utter bar is swung upwardly, by the pull oi the cl-ain 30 on the upper radial arm 36 carried i the cutter bar, from the full line po tion shown in Fig. 1 to the full. line position as at A, as shown in 7, the serrated locking disk 117 being released at this time. After the cutter bar assumes the position indicated by A in Fig. 7, the pcrater moves the lever 127 back and forth,
consequently eflecting rotation of the nut 116 and rigidly locking the serrated disk 11.7 to the slotted link 118, thereby holding the cutter bar rigidly in position. The sprocket 28 is then driven at a slow speed in the reverse direction, causing the chain 30 to drive the sprocket 44;, it being understood that the clutch 1 has engaged the bevel gear 80, and the truck wheels 2 are moved along the trackway to effect sumping at a slow or cutting speed until the bar assumes a position indicated by Bin Fig. 7, it being also understood that the braking device 128 is released at this time. The cutter bar locking disk 117 is then released and the braking device is then again set, preventing rotation of the sprocketand upon continued rotation of the sprocket 28 the bar is swung downwardly by the pull of the chain on the lower radial. arm carried by the cutter bar from the position B in Fig. 7 to the lower dotted line position (l at a slow or cutting speed. The cutter bar is then again locked in position by the locking 7 The braking device 128 1. released and the clutch member 10-4; is shifted into engagement with the bevel gear 76 and upon continued rotation of the sprocket 28 the truck wheels are driven in a reverse direction at a slow or cutting speed and the cutter be r *ithdrawn from the face of the coal to th position indicated at D in Fig. 7. The locking disk 117 is then released and the tracking device 128 is then again set and upon reverse-rotation of the sprocket 28 the cutter bar is swung rapidly upwardly to the full line position shown. in Fig. 1 and is locked in this position. The braking device 128 is then released, the sprocket 53 connected to the clutch member 49, the clutch 10-1 shifted into engagement with bevel gear 80, and the truck is driven rearwardly from the face at a fasttransport speed relative to the trackway, the cable reel 15 winding in the cable 16 at this time in the usual manner. These and other operations of this improved mining machine will be clearly apparent to those skilled in the artv lVhile I have in this application specifically described one form which my invention may assume in practice, it will be understood that this form has been shown for purposes of illustration and that the invention may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit or the scope of the appended claims.

In a mining apparatus, a truck having running gear, cutting mechanism thereon including a driving motor and a cutter bar pivoted for movement in a vertical plane, means driven by said motor for driving the running gear of said truck to effect bodily movement of said cutter bar at a cutting speed in opposite directions without reversing said motor and for swinging said cutter bar at a cutting speed including a flexible transmission element, and means for effecting circulation of said element as a whole or movement of portions thereof relative to a fixed portion including means for holding a portion thereof stationary.
55. In a mining apparatus, a truck having running gear, cutting mechanism movably mounted on said truck, a motor, and means driven by said motor for driving the running gear of said truck to effect bodily movement of said cutting mechanism at a cutting speed in opposite directions without reversing said motor and for moving said cutting mechanism relative to said truck at a cutting speed including a flexible transmission element, and means for effecting circulation thereof as a whole or movement of portions thereof relative to another fixed portion including means for holding a portion thereof stationary.
56. In a mining machine, a machine frame, a cutter bar pivotally mounted thereon, a motor carried by said frame, and means driven by said motor for swinging said cutter bar and for propelling the apparatus bodily at the same speed in apposite directions without reversing said motor, said bar swinging means including an endless flexible, connection, means for holding a portion thereof stationary, and means for moving another portion thereof.

In a mining machine, a machine frame, a cutter bar pivotally mounted thereon, a motor, and means driven by said motor for swinging said cutter bar and for propelling the apparatus bodily at the same speed in opposite directions without reversing said motor, said bar swinging means including an endless flexible connection reeved in a polygon, and means for changing the shape of said polygon to effect bar swing.
58. In a mining machine, a machine frame, a pivoted cutter bar thereon, a motor, and means driven by said motor for effecting bar swing in opposite directions while its pivot remains stationary and for propelling the machine bodily at the same speed in opposite directions without reversing said motor, said bar swinging means including a flexible element cooperating with said bar and with a stationary point, and means cooperating with said element to change the distance between the point of cooperation with the bar and the fixed point.
59. In a mining apparatus, a machine frame, a pivoted cutter bar thereon, a motor, and means driven by said motor for swinging said cutter bar and for propelling the apparatus bodily at the same speed in opposite directions without reversing said motor, said bar swinging means including an endless flexible transmission element cooperatively connected with said bar at spaced points, means for imparting a moving force to the portion of said element at one side of said points, and means for holding said element stationary cooperating with the portion thereof at the other side of said points.
60. In a mining apparatus, a wheeled truck, cutting mechanism thereon including a driving shaft projecting laterally therefrom, a feed operating member, and means for selectively driving said truck at different speeds and at the same speed in opposite directions from said driving shaft and from said feed operating member and While said shaft rotates continuously in the same direction.
61. In a mining machine, a wheeled truck nections driven by said motor and engageable with said bar for moving the same about its pivot, and truck wheel driving mechanism cooperating with said bar swinging means for moving said pivot relative to said trackway at the same speed in opposite directions without reversing said motor.
62. In a mining machine, atruck movable over a trackway, a modified self-propelled mining machine disposed edgewise thereon and secured thereto with its surface which corresponds to the surface normally constituting the supporting bottom of such machines extending vertically, said machine including a forwardly extending cutter'bar supported by said truck and located above the latter, a motor, and a self-contained means driven by said motor and constantly cooperating with said bar for swinging said bar about its pivot and for propelling the machine bodily in opposite directions without reversing said motor and at the same speed to insert a vertical kerf in an upstanding face which is perpendicular to the line of the trackway.
63. In a mining machine, a motor, a pivoted cutter bar, and means driven by said motor for positively swinging said bar about its pivot and for propelling the machine bodily at the same speed in either direction without reversal of said motor including a plurality of driving members and a flexible transmission element associated therewith, and means for holding one of said members stationary while the other rotates to act on said flexible element. v
