Serial No. 409,555.
In the accompanying drawings there is shown tor purposes of illustration one form which the invention may assume in practice.
In these drawings,
Fig. l is a plan View of a mining apparatus having the illustrative embodiment ot the improved supplemental propelling means embodied therein.
` F ig. 2 is a side elevational vievv of the mining apparatus shown in Fig. l.
F 8 is an enlarged horizontal sectional vi evv talren substantially on line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged transverse vertical sec` tional view taken substantially on line 4 4 oit Fig. 2 with parts shovvn in elevation.
In this illustrative embodiment of the invention there is shown a mining apparatus of the Wheel mounted universal type of the same general character as that disclosed in a copending application to one Morris P. Holmes, Ser. No. 137,600, filed Sept. 24, 1926, al@- though it is evident that the improved supplemental propelling means may be utilized in an equally eiective manner With mining apparatus of various other types. This mining apparatus generally comprises a frame l supported on adjustable front and rear supports 2 and 3 respectively herein comprising sivingable arms and supported on truck Wheels l adapted to run along a usualy mine trackvvay 5. As described in the above mentioned copending application, the supports 2 and 3 may be adjusted. either simultaneously or one independently of the other to eect adjustment of the frame l into dilferent elevated positions relative to the trackwayor to be .tilted about a transverse axis to change its angle relative to the horizontal as conditions may require. Mounted on the frame l for rotation about a longitudinal axis Within spaced bearing means 6 and 7 supported by the trames of the front and rear adjustable supports 2 and 3, respectively, is a frame or body 8. This body houses a motor 9 and supports at its forWardend adjustable lierf cutting mechanism l0 including a yusual svvingable cutter bit carrying cutter bar. As the specilic construction of the mechanism for rotating the machine body, for adjusting the cutting mechanisnnand for driving and CTI operating the cutting` mechanism do not enter into this invention, further description of the same is thought unnecessary. The motor 9 also drives, as hereinafter described, the truck Wheel driving mechanism generally designated 11 and the improved supplemental propelling means generally designated 12. lillectricall energy is conducted to the electrical apparatus of the motor 9 through a usual 'flexible conductor cable 13 Wound upon a cable reel 14 mounted for rotation on the rear end of the frame 1 and this reel is also driven as described in the above mentioned application from the motor 9.
NOW referring to the truck Wheel driving mechanism 11 it will be noted that the armature shaft of the motor 9 see Fie'. 3 drives an alined shaft which has secured thereto as by a key 21 at its rear end a spur pinion 22. As illustrated, the pinion 22 meshes With a spur gear 23 suitably secured to a longitudinally extending` shaft 24. Also secured to this shaft is a spur pinion 25 meshing With a spur :gear 26 secured to a longitudinally eX- tending shaft 27. These shafts are suitably journaled Within a transmission housing` 28 suitably secured tothe frame 1 and have secured thereto as by keys 29 Worms 30 and 31 respectively. These Worms mesh respectively With coaxial fast and slow speed Worm Wheels 32 and 33 suitably journa'led on anti-friction lbearings 34 supported by a horizontal transversely extending shaft 35. rllhis shaft is in turn journaled Within anti-friction bearings 36 support-ed Within the transmission housin0i28 and the ivorm Wheels 32 and 33 are alternatively connectible to the shaft by means of friction disc clutches 37 and 38 respectively vso .that when the clutch 37 is appliedthe shaft 35 may be driven from the m'otor9 at ya relatively fast speed While When thefriction'clutch 38 is applied and the clutch 37 is released, the shaft 35 may be driven in thesame direction vat a lrelatively low speed.
:In 1theipresent construction, secured as by a key 40 to the shaft 35 is a bevel Ypinion 41 meshing` with reverse bevels 42 and 43 suita- Vbly journaled on anti-friction bearings 44 ,supported by Ia longitudinally extending shaft 45, in turn journaled Within suitable anti-friction bearings 46 supported Within the transmission rhousing- 28. These reverse Abevels-42 43 are alternativel `connectible'to :acoupling- 49 to the shaft 45 is an allined shaft y5Ojournaled at its forward end Within an anti-'frictionbearing51 supported bythe frame 152 of the lrear support 3. key 53 to the forward end of the shaft 5() is 'abevelpinion 54meshing with a bevel gear Secured as by a 55irotatably supported by a transversershaft 63 to a transverse shaft 64. Also secured to this shaft is chain sprocket 65 which is connected by an endless chain connection 66 to a chain sprocket 67 secured to the rear truck vWheel axle 68. Also secured to the shaft 64 is a chain sprocket` 69 connected by an endless chain connection Z'O (see Fig. 2) to a chain spr cket 71 secured to a transverse shaft 72. This shaft is connected by a chain :and sprocket connection 'l' 3 to the front truck Wheel axle' 7 4. lt will thus be seen that When the clutch device 58 is in a position to connect the bevel gear 55 to the shaft 56 and one or the 'other of the clutches 47, 48 and 37, 38 are applied, the truck Wheels may be driven in either of oppositedirections from the motor 9 at either a relatively high transport speed or at a `relatively slow cutting speed. lt Will herein be noted that secured as by a key Y 6 to the shaft 35 is a bevel pinion 7K7 meshing with reverse bevels .7 8 and 79, these bevels being alternatively connectible by friction clutches 8O vand 81 respectively to a longitudinally extending shaft 82. rlhe shaft 82 drives, in a manner clearly described in thc above mentioned copending application, the mechanism for adjusting the supports 2 and 3. As this mechanism `does lnot specifically enter into this invention, description of the same` is herein thought unnecessary. rlllhe operating means for vthe clutches 37, 38, 47, 48, 58, 8O and 81 are also substantially the same as those described in the above mentioned Holmes ap- .plicationrllhe improved supplemental propel-ling mechanism 12 for propelling the apparatus along the mine trackway includes haulage devices `83' and 84, yherein each comprising a Winding,` drum 85 and these drums have Wound :thereupon haulage `cables 86 and 87 respectively. Asrthe Vmechanisms for driving the drums 85 are similarin construction, a description of one Will sufiice for both. Refer- .ring'to the driving-mechanism for the drum 85 of the hauling device 83, it Will be noted that meshing` vwith the reverse bevels 42, 43 is a bevel gear 86 secured as by a lkey 8,7 to a horizontal Vtransversely extending shaft 88 herein alined 'with the shaft 35. rlhis shaft l88 is suitably journaled 'Within' a bearing' sleeve 89 supported .within a br-zaring` bracket 90 secured as by screws 91 to one side of the transmission housing,r 28. Connected to the shaft 88 is a series of clutch plates or discs 92 which are interleaved With a corresponding series of clutch plates or discs 93 secured to a sleeve portion 94 preferably formedV inparatus at substantially the same speed tegral with the drum. AThe drum 85 is journaled on spaced anti-friction bearings 95 supported by the bearing bracket 90. In the present construction, the mechanism for applying the clutch 92, 93 comprises a hand wheel nut 96 threadedly connected at 97 to the reduced threaded end of the shaft 88. Surrounding this shaft is an annular pressure plate 98 having inwardly pro] cting fingers 99 engaging the adjacent end disc of Vthe clutch. Interposed between the hand wheel 96 and the pressure plate 98 is a ball' thrust bearing 100. The hand Wheel for operating the friction clutch controlling the winding drum 85 f the haulage device 84 is indicated at 101. It will thus be seen that when the friction clutch 92, 93 isi-applied, the winding drum 85 may be rotated in a direction to wind in its cooperating cable at either a relatively slow speed or a relatively high speed, depending upon which of the fast and slow speed controlling clutches 37 and 38 is applied. It will also be evident `that by reversing the motor 9 the winding drums 85 may be rotated in a direction to pay out their cooperating cables at either a relatively high speed or a relatively low speed. When the drums are being driven at a relatively slow speed the cables are drawn in or wound in to propel the apas that effected by the truck wheel drive, it being evident that the apparatus may be propelled along the mine trackway at a relatively slew cutting speed under the propulsion of either or both the truck wheel driving mechanism 11 and the supplemental haulage mechanism l2.
The operation of the improved mining apparatus will now be described. The apparatus may he propelled about the mine at a relatively high transport speed under the control of the fast feed control clutch 37 and the friction clutch 47. The truck wheels are driven from the motor 9 at a fast transport speed through the spur gearing 22, 2 3, worm gearing 30, 32, bevel gearing 41, 42, shafts 45, 50, bevel gearing 54, and the chain and sprocket connections 61, G6 and 70. If it is desired to propel the-apparatus along the mine trackway in a reverse direction at a relatively high speed, the friction clutch 47 is released and the friction clutch 48 applied, and as a result, the truck wheels are driven in the reverse direction. During the cutting operation, the cutting mechanism is operated to cut a kerf beneath the coal and the sumping and withdrawal cuts are effected by proelling the apparatus bodily along the mine trackway at a relatively slow cutting speed. The relatively slow speed drive of the truck wheels for propelling the apparatus forward along the mine trackway is effected by the motor 9 through transmission gears 22, 23, 25, 26, worm gearing 31, 33, bevel` gearing 4l, 42, friction clutch 47, shafts'45, 50, bevel gearing 54, 55 and chain and sprocket connections 61, 66 and 70. The apparatus may be propelled rearwardly along the mine trackway simply by releasing the friction clutch i 47 and applying the reverse friction 48, thereby effecting reversal of the drive. If, for any reason, the truck wheels slip relative to the track rails and their tractive effort is insufficient for propelling the machine along the mine trackway during the cutting operation, the truck wheel driving mechanism may be supplemented by the improved sup-- plemental propelling means 12. When it is desired to propel the apparatus by means of either of the haulage devices 83, 84 the feed cable is unwound from the drum and eX- tended to a point in advance of the machine as, for instance, anchored at its free end as shown in Eig. 1 to a roof jack or other suitable anchoring device. If it is desired to wind in the feed cable at a speedfappropriate to effect propulsion of the machine at a cutting speed, the friction clutches 38 and 92, 93 are applied, thereby effecting rotation of the drum 85 in winding direction at a relatively slow speed. The winding drum may be operated to wind in the cable to eifect propulsion of the apparatus along the mine trackway in the reverse direction simply by extending the cable in a rearward direction and anchoring the free end thereof to a roof jack or other suitable anchoring device located at the rear ofthe apparatus. It will also beevident that if desired the apparatus may be propelled along the mine trackway in either direction under the 'propulsion `of'both the haulage devices 83 and 84. These haulage devices 83 and 84 may also be utilized for propelling the apparatus upwardly along a steeply inclined trackway or under certain conditions to be utilized as a safety device for controlling movement of the apparatus downwardly along a steeply inclined trackway. lt will also be evident that these improved haulage devices may be operated simultaneously with the truck wheel driving mechanism to supplement the truck wheel drive in case the truck wheels slip relative to the track rails or 1f desired, the haulage devices may be used to propel the machine Wholly independent-ly of the truck wheel drive. These haulage devices may also be utilized for spotting mine cars and for hoisting mine props orany other auxiliary work, thereby obviating'the necessity of providing a separate haulage device for these purposes.
As a result of this invention it will be noted that an improved mining apparatus vof the ,wheel mounted type is provided having improved propelling means. It willfurther be evident that by providing the supplemental propelling mechanism in a mining machine of the wheel mounted universal type, it is possible to supplement the truck wheel drive in case thetruck wheels slip relative to the track rails, for instance, When the machine eifecting its vsumping and Withdrawal cuts or moving along a steeply7 inclined tracliway. It Will still further be noted that the improved winding devices may be utilized for auxiliary hoisting purposes, thereby cbviating the necessity oit a special hoisting device. It Will also be noted that the improved supplemental propulsion mechanism may be embodied in a mining apparatus of a standard design With a minimum ot change and expense. These and other uses and advantages of the improved mining apparatus will be clearly apparent to those skilled in the art.
While there is in this application specifically described one form which the invention may assume in practice7 it Will be understood that this form of the same is shovvn for purposes of illustration and that the invention may be modified and embodied in various other forms Without departing from its spirit or the scope of the appended claims.
