IMPROVEMENT IN CARPET-STRETCHERS.

My improvement consists, secondly, inalever adapted to fold back upon the push-bar and form part of the handle thereof, to push with said bar.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view, representing the device arranged to stretch a carpet. Fig. 2 represents a side view of the device, the lever lying back upon the push bar. Fig. 3 is a plan or top View of the same.

Directly beneath said standards is secured, by rivets or other equivalent fastenings, a plate, 0, having teeth 0.

D is a handle, which is secured to a lever, E, having a point, e. The lever is pivoted near its pointby pintlef to the yoke F, which is in turn pivoted by pintles g to the standards dof the arms a.

Operation-For placing a carpet: In laying carpets it is of great importance to have a device that will seize the carpet and bring it to the skirt-board and hold it there while being tacked.

When the carpet does not require much stretching, this device is used in its normal conditionthat is, with the yoke F and lever E folded back and down upon the push-bar A. By taking hold of the handle D with the right hand, and grasping the lever E and the stern a, of the bar A with the left hand, and holding them together while the points of the teeth 0 of the plate 0 are inserted in the carpet, it is pushed up to the skirt-board, and by pressing over the rear end of thebar A the spur B is inserted in the floor and holds the carpet in place while being tacked.

For stretching the carpet, the points of the teeth 0 of the plate 0 are inserted in the carpet about three or four inches from the edge. The handle D of the lever E is then taken hold of by the right hand and the stem a of the bar A by the left-hand. The lever is next brought a little back and its point e forced into the floor, and the lever pushed forward. This operation is repeated until the carpet is in proper place, when the rear end of the bar is pressed to insert the spur B in the floor to hold the carpet until it is tacked. The lever is now with its yoke folded back upon the push-bar, so that the device will be entirely out of the way while the carpetis being tacked.

The device is cheaply maiuifactured, of great utility, and simple in construction.

Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new aud desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. The combination, with the bar A, having spur B and toothed plate 0 of the yoke F and lever E, as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In combination with a push-bar, the lever adapted to fold over said bar, as and for the purpose set forth.
