My invention refers to flying machines, more especially of the flying boat type and has particular reference to the stub wings or side floats attached to the hull of such flying boats. p
Itis an object of my invention to improve the resistivity of such stub wings against-the impact of the water by providing same with an elastic protection which substantially covers part or the whole of the bottom side of these wings.
-The elastic bodies serving to protect the stub wings may either be formed of any material resistive against water and possessing suflicient elasticity or may have the form of gastight resilient containers or bags filled with air or some other gas.
Such elastic protective bodies may extend all over the width of the wing or only over part thereof and maybe surrounded by an elastic protective'skin or may be protected against damage-"by resilient or resiliently mounted plates formed of non-resilient material. They may either form a separate layer on the underside of the stub Wing or may be'embedded therein. g
In the drawings afiixed to this specification and'forming'part thereof stub wings embodying my invention are illustrated diagrammatically by way of example.
In the drawings Fig. 1 is a front view of a stub wing accord ing to this invention and Fig. 2 is a plan view, viewed from below.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the outerend of a stub wing having its bottom side lined with elastic bodies.
Fig. 4 is a View similarto the one shown 1n, Fig. 3, in which anelastic body- 1s shown to form one edge of the stub wing.

Referring to the drawings and first to Figs. 1 and 2, 1 is the outer skin of they girder-l ke stub wing structure, 2 being the struts reinforcing same. 13 are cross-beams forming pait of the stub wing structure and PI'OJBCtlIlg from the underside therefrom. 4 is a large elastic body extending all over the width of the stub wing'at the rear end thereof, whlle 5 are similar elastic bodies of smaller size, each extending over half the width of the wing. The bodies 5 covering the front portion of the wing are enclosed between an outer rim 6 and a partition 7 In the modification illustrated in Fig. 3 elastic bodies 8, which may also be formed of wooden boards, cover the bottom side of the w ng structure.
In the form shown in Fig. 4 the front portion 10 of the stub wing structure 9 affords room for the accommodation, on its underside, of an elastic body 11, the front edge of which projects beyond the front edge of the wing. In the modification illustrated in Fig. 5 the elastic bodies 12 are mounted on the underside of the stub wing 13 substantially as shown in Fig. 2. However, here resilient plates 14 are fixed at 15 to the bottom ends of the cross-beams 16 and on being acted upon by the water will give way. rocking upwardly and compressing the elastic bodies, while at the same time affording protection therefor.
'Preferably the plates 14 are fixed to the bottom sides of the elastic bodies, which may be cushions or bags filled with air or some other as.
I wish it to be understood that I do not desire to be limited to the exact details of construction shown and described for obvious modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art. In the claims aflixed to this specification no selectionof any particular modification plurality of elastic protective bodies covering the bottom side of such stub win 4.
