Description

Dec. 16, 1930. E. MONAMARA 1,785,640
CALENDAR Filed Jan. 25, 1930 ldward/Fayl mara INVENTOR WITNESS ATTORNEY r I Patented Dec. 16, 1930 UNIT D STATES PATENT OFFICE I EDWARD MGNAMARA, F WOLSEY, SOUTH DAKOTA oamnnan Application filed 'January 23,1930. seal No. 422,860.
I This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in calendars of the perbodies a retaining element upon the housing to prevent displacement of the numeral carrying members.
More specifically stated the face of the housing is provided with means upon the face thereof bearing the abbreviations of the days of the week.
Withtheabove and other objects in view, the invention further consists of the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved form of perpetual calendar.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken through the pocket portion and illustrating the arrangement of the numeral carrying members therein.
Referring to the drawing in detail where- I in'like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the I reference v character 10' indicates generally a form of housing-which maybe of hollow or solid construction, may be designed to sit upright upon a desk or other surface and in the present application of the invention I employ an apertured tab or ear, such as indicated at 11, to adequately secure a housing upon a wall surface and the like subsequent to the passage of a fastening element through the aperture.
As mentioned in the foregoing, the housing '50 is provided with a sight opening and same is identified by the reference numeral 12. The tab or ear 11 extends or otherwise depends foran appreciable distance back of the housing to form the rear wall of a slot or passage 13 having communication at its ends with the upper edge of the housing and the sight opening 12. Placards 14, preferably three in number, each of which having the abbreviations of two of the different months of the year upon both sides thereof are arranged inversely whereby each. of the abbreviations will be effectively exposed in readable form through the sight openin 12 in the manner suggested in Figure 1 of the drawing.
Thepocket portion, referred to in the foregoing and as indicated at 15 of elongated for- 'mation extending horizontally with the face of the housing is disposed an apreciable distance below thesight opening 12. The outer face of'the housing 10, however, is provided with an elongated strip16 arranged immediately above the upper edge of the pocket 15 and subdivided into blocks or subdivisions 17, preferably seven in number and which are to separately contain the abbreviations of the days of the week. Strips members 18, of elongated and fiat formation, measure lengthwise :thereof for appreciable distances greater than that of'the width of the pocket 15 and in the application .ofthe strips, it is necessary to gouge out or otherwise provide under-cut grooves 19 within the upper edges of the pocket 15 to facilitate the insertion of the strip members. By such connection the up per ends of the strip members will be effectively held against accidental displacement.
The fiat sides of the strip members 18 are provided withspaced vertical series of numerals indicative of the day dates of the months; each of which having different ser1es of numerals and may be interchangeably arranged to exhibit the day dates for a month in advance. The opposed side walls of the pocket 15 are provided with a horizontally projecting pocket 20 and an inwardly and downwardly inclined slot 21 respectively, both of which being disposed adjacent the lower edge of said pocket. A bar member or retaining element, such as indicated at 22, having one end disposed within the horizon- 2 if? I v i p 1,785,640
tally disposed pocket 20 and the other end slidably mounted within the slot 21'is ten sioned throughout the major portion of its 1 length against the outer surfaces of the strip I I members l8zwhereby the latter will be maintained upon their inner sides or faces-flush against thebottom wall of the pocket: 15 and 7 from which positions same may} not become V accidentally displaced. I H r 10 It is to be noted that in the present form r of calendar there will be 110 leafletso 'r-pag'es to tear off daily, consequently the usual disturbance caused by the rustling or flapping of such leafletsand the obscurity thereoiim cident to curling upwardly'fr'om the lower edgesfthereoi is overcome. 1111 the perpetual calendar-it is -,only necessary toset-upv or reset same atthe end of a month for the term of theensuingmonthgj f f Theqinvention, is susceptible: of various l y changes in its fornnprop'ortionsand m nor details of construction, and the right is here;
in reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope otthe appended claim.
5 Having described the invention, what is I I claimedis'z- I Q N; p I
A perpetual calendar comprising a-housv ing including vertical passage within its upper portion in communication with an I so elongated horizontally.disposed sight open- 7 ring exposed toward the front, placardsremovablysecure'd within said passagehaving the abbreviations of the nonths of the year inversely arranged-adjacent theopposedside w ed'gesand'upon both sides to selectively exhibit the abbreviations of v the months through the sight opening in readable formation, said housing being further provided with a pocketrecessed for an appreciable distance-in the face thereof and below the sight opening, the upper edge of said pocket having an undercut groove, strip members receivable withi-lsaid pocket and projecting at their uppermost ends within the un der-cut groove are provided with successions of day date legends upon opposite sides thereof, means carried upon that portionxot the face of the housing overhanging the under-cut groove including the days ofthe week idenv 5e] tifying the day dates, said housing having c oppositely 'disposed horizontally aligned pockets Withinthe side edgesof the first mentioned pocket, one of the pockets being downwardly and inwardly projected from and i 5 opening to the front, and a bar removably positioned within the pockets and engaging Q the strip members to prevent accidental displacement thereof. a p
