This invention relates to a lubricating system for pumps and the like;
The chief object'of the invention is toiprovide means for lubricating an overhead shaft amount of overhead distributing passageway, the discharge being'facilitated by the addition of lubricant confining and conveying plate or wall means. This invention is an improvement upon and a continuation in part of the invention shown and described in the copending application, Serial No. 219,868, filed Sept. 16, 1927, entitled Pump Mechanism. The full nature of the invention will be more fully understood from the accompanying drawings and the following descriptions and claims: v

The triangular actuator is confined to an oscillatory movementby the links 26'pivotally supported at 27 intermediate the two linkpivots 23 and in alignment with'the crank shaft pivotal sup port of the triangular actuator and links 26 are pivotally supported at 127 in the reservoir. 1 Y a Rotation of the crank shaft by gear 1 1 causes the oscillator 24 to oscillate which causes alternate reciprocation of the'parallel piston rods of a duplex pump.

The wall 39 defines a passageway .for distributing oil discharged on tothe cover plate thru the opening 40. defined by the wall-41. The cover plate. has a plurality ofpiston rodtbearings 81 lubricated bythe oil in the passageways and also gravity-fed openings 42. Said openings register with openings 43 formed in bushings 36 or a similar construction so that the power shaft bearings are thus lubricated by oil which Works its way outwardly'along the shaft thru the bushings 36 and discharges into aperipherally enveloping collecting trough 44 formed in or upon the housing, and said trough communicates with the passageway that discharges inwardly into the reservoir or chamber, and the discharge end of said passageway 45 is so arranged that it will discharge into the passageway 46 formed in the crank shaftbearings 13 so that the lubricant which works its way outwardly along the crank shaft and the bearings will discharge into the chamber thru the relief passageway 47.
Gear 11 which meshes with pinion 37 carries a lubricant from the bottom of the reser. voir or chamber to near the top thereof. Meshing engagement between the gears transfers the oil from the gear to the pinion and the pinion throws the oil into the opening40, defined by walls. 41 and into the passageway defined by the wall 39. To secure positive discharge of the lubricant, plate or wall, means are provided for overlapping the gears at the meshing engagement and said wall or plate means extends toward the open ing 40. Herein, the aforesaid'consists of a pair of plates having the hub portions 51 secured to the shaft 38 and rotatable with and by said shaft and in slightly spaced relation to the drivingpinion 37 so that there is a slight clearance between said rotating plates and the driving gear 11; The plates are of sui'ficient diameter and the wall 41 of the opening 40 is sufiiciently inclined to permit the platesto not only overlap. the toothed portion of the driving gear 11, but the plates project into and substantially thru the opening 40. The plates, therefore, laterally confine the oil at the meshing engagement and insures a substantially complete transfer of the oil from the gear to the pinion or to the plates, and the plates and pinion discharge the oil received from the gear upwardly thru the opening, whereupon it is distributed by the passageway as aforesaid.
To prevent splashing, a suitable cover construction 50 is provided which may be secured as at 51 to the reservoir 10. Said cover includes the openings 52 for the piston rod construction. As shown in Fig. 2, the channel or passageway 30 is completely filled with oil and. the boss 81 guiding the piston rod is submerged. The groove 44 may and preferably is encirclingin character relative to the reservoir, and immediately adjacent the bearings 13 or their equivalent, said groove includes partitions such as 44a, which insure discharge of the oil or lubricant which discharges into the groove 44 adjacent the passageway 45 thru the same and to the bearin to-the crank shaft drive.
The invention claimed is:
1. In combination a gear chamber constituting an oil reservoir, a gear therein adapted to run in oil in said chamber, a superposed gear meshing therewith, a cover. for said chamber including. an oil passageway for gravity lubrication, and including an opening above the superposed gear for supplying the oil to the passageway from the latter, and a rotatable plate portion overlapping both gears at the meshing engagement for laterally confining the oil carried by the firstmentioned gear to the engageable portions of said gears.
2. In combination a gear chamber constituting an oil reservoir, a gear therein adapted to run in oil in said chamber, a superposed gear meshing therewith, a cover for said chamber includingan oil passageway for gravity lubrication, and including an opening above the superposed gear for supplying the oil to the iessageway from the latter, and a rotatable plate at each side of the superposed gear and extending toward the opening for forming an oil discharge channel and overlapping the first-mention ed gear at the meshing engagement for laterally confining the oil carried by the latter to the engageable portions of the gears.
3. In combination a gear chamber constituting an oil reservoir, a gear therein adapted to run in oil in said chamber, a superposed gear meshing therewith, a cover for said chamber including an oil passageway for gravity lubrication, and including an opening above the superposed gear for supplying tie oil to the passageway from the latter, a wall projecting upwardly and defining said opening, and rotat-able'plates projecting into the opening and overlapping both gears at the meshing engagement thereof for laterally confining the oil carried by the first-mentioned gear to the engageablc portions of said gears.
4. In combination a gear chamber constituting an oil reservoir, a gear therein adapted to run in oil in said chamber, a superposed gear meshing therewith, a cover for said chamber including an oil passageway for gravity luln'ica'tion, and including an opening above the superposed gear from supplying the oil to the passageway from the latter, a shaft supporting the superposed gear in position beneath said cover passageway and lubricated thereby, and plates carried by the shaft adjacent the superposed gear for rotation with and by the shaft in the rotation of the gear, said plates overlapping both gears and the meshing engagement for laterally confining the oil carried by the first-mentioned gear to the engageable portions'of said gears.
5. A device as defined by claim 4 characterized by the plates projecting into the opening of said cover for forming an oil discharge channel therethru.
6. A pump including a pump cylinder, a piston therefor, piston rod reciprocating mechanism in spaced relation with the cylinder, a casing inclosing said mechanism including an apertured plate positioned ZLbOVo ranged to form a superposed lubricant reser, 1 voir, a gear pump withm the casing and arthe same and horizontally mounted and arranged to form a superposed lubricant reservoir, a gear pump within the casing and arranged to supply lubricant to the plate reservoir through an aperture thereof, and gravity feed passages supplying lubricant to the pump bearings and the mechanism.
7 A pump including a pump cylinder, a piston therefor, piston rod reciprocating mechanism in spaced relation with the cylinder, a casing inclosing said mechanism including an apertured plate positioned above the same and horizontally mounted and arranged to supply lubricant to theplate reservoir through an aperture thereof, gravity feed passages supplying lubricant to the pump bearings and the mechanism, and a splash cover associated with said plate and casing and through which the piston rod extends.
8. In a power head the combination of a casing including a lubrlcant .recelvlng chamber, a crank shaft rotatably mounted therein, a gear rotatable in lubricant in said casing and actuating sa1d crank shaft, a piston rod operable by said crank shaft, a body portion including a lubricant supplying channel, a power shaft in saidbody portion, a bearing positioned in said head for rotatably supporting said power shaft, said channel and said bearing having registering ports for supplying lubricant to said bearings, and a pinion on saidpower shaft connected to said gear for rotating the same, said pinion receiving lubricant from'said gear, and said body portion having an aperture therein for supplying lubricant discharged by centrifugal force from said gear to said channel.
9. In a pump mechanism the combination of a power head, a pump cylinder and piston in superposed relation thereto, means spac-.
