Description

O. M. COON FUEL BURNER Filed March 16,* 1928 llllllllllllllllgull;
Inventor QM 600m Patented Dec. 16, 17930 UNITED STATES rrr:
OSCAR M. cooN, oF LUBBOCK, TEXAS FUEL' :BurmanE This invention relates to an improved fuel burner for gaseous fuel which is especially adapted for use in vassociation with furnaces, boilers and the like.
5 What I propose to do is to provide a strucf ture, which in my opinion, is generally an improvement on other known'furnace structures patented in this art, or upon burners now upon the market with which I am familiar.
sociation thereof which serve to characterize and render this invention individual as compared with known devices, will become more readily apparent from the following descrip- 15 tion and drawings.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a horizontal section through a brick lined furnace showing the improved burner'arranged therein. Y
Figure 2 is an enlarged front end elevation of one of the parts of the invention.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal section through the structure seen in Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the complete burner unit. i
The structure shown in Figures 2' and 3 may be generally designated as a mixer and itis represented in its entirety by the reference character 5. It comprises a special fitting having a flared entrance 6 and a cylindrical neck 7 The neck 7 is fitted telescopically and adjustably upon a fuel .conducting tube 8. rIhe adjustment of the fittingon the tube is maintained through the medium of av retaining screw 9. Theflared mouth 6 carries a cross piece at its entrance, this being designated at 10, and constituting a mounting for the gas conducting nozzle 11. I-Iere again a set screw 12 is employed for adjustably re-v taining the gas nozzle `in place. Obviously this type of mixer is adaptable for supplying gas under low pressure. Of course thev dis# charge of the gas is regulated bythe restricted Y end of the nozzle and the nozzle is propor- 5 tioned properly with respect to the flared end to acquire appropriate mixture of the gas and air, the air entering around the nozzle through the flared entrance 6. Y
rfhis mixing device is associatedwith what may be designated as a burner block or brick The structural features and the relative as Serial No.
i3 composed of high` temperature lire clay.VV
The block is general rectangular-inconfiguration and. isfformed vwith an elongated-slot 14 belo'wwhich the tube@` extends. In `practice the block occupies uthe'opening in the 'front wallf the casing 15 ofthe furnace. YIncidentally it may-be mentioned Vthat the furnace is provided witlifay lining composed of a plurality of fire bricks v16 arranged inthe approximate manner shown in Figure 1.
The mixingv device and mounting block therefor constitute a principal part of the burner unit. The remainder of the unit is 'in ing gas passing through the nozzle under v low pressure as stated. The secondary air passes through the slot 14 above tliemixing device and through ducts14m in the block 13, and at opposite sides'of the mixingde vice as shown in Figure 4. In thisway an intimate mixture of fuel is insured. TheV mixture is ejected against the device'l? in order to provide additional mixingfand a combustible fuel rforl production of an intense flame.l When the gas flame and s'ec- Y ondary air strike the brick device 17 which is manifestly maintained at Aa high temper# lture a secondary combustion of high efiiciency forgas consumed takes place.v p Y As is obvious this burneris designed to construction will be approximately 250 cubic feet of 500 cubic Vfeet pei; hour, and per orifice, depending upon the pressure of gas at said orifice. The principal feature of the invention is the combined action of the baffle or checker device 17 and the special burner.v Incidentally the operation of the burner can be varied by appropriate regulations ofv g operate on gas under low pressure and the` Y the adjustable parts thereoi` as is evidenced from Figure 3.'
It is thought that by considering the description in connection With the drawings a clear understanding of the invention is at hand. Therefore a more lengthy description is regarded unnecessary.
Minor changes in shape, size, and rearrangements of details coming Within the eld of invention claimed may be to if desired.
Having thus described the invention, What u I claim is n i The combination of aburner open atl its, Y Y
opposite ends and containing a comparatively small nozzle Wherebya passage for air is afforded between burner and nozzle,.and a burner block having an aperture receiving said burner and also having a slot above said laperture and burner `and means in its end `portions at opposite sides of the burner .aperture for the passage of air.
' In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
OSCAR M. COON.
