IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters VPatent No. 178,454, dated June 6, 1876; application led March 9, 1876.
To all Awhom 'it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN HYDE MONROE, ofMinneapolis, in the State of Minnesota, have invented a new and Improved Plow 5 and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which-A Figure 1 is a side elevation of the plow. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section of the same.
My invention relates to plows having adjustable beams, and certain other improvements having economical and mechanical'advanta-ges 5 and it consists in a plow having a pivoted beam, and the handles fastened directly to the plow standard, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In order that those skilled in the art may make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the manner in which' I have carried it out.
In the said drawings, A is the plow-beam,
pivoted by a bolt, E, to the plow-standard B,
so that it may have a lateral horizontal motion. On the top ofthe standard B is a head, N, through which passes a horizontal bolt, F,
4which clamps and holds the ends of the han- A has acurvilinear adjustment to the extent of the slot O, and can, through means ot' the boltz' and nut H, be clamped at any point throughout the extent of the slot, so as to adjust the draft on the beam.
ThehandlesOare made from a straight piece of wood, and the hand portions C sawled out at a propercurvc to hold. The lower ends of these handles are bolted directly to the plow-standard B, or the head N, by means of the bolt F, .as shown. By this means I give the handles a decidedly rigid hold upon the standard, and, at the same time, put them at such an angle as to avoid any necessity of bending at the hand portions. They are entirely detached from the beam, so as to allow the adjustment of the beam horizontally without ai'ecting the handles.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The plow-frame consisting of the froutstandard B, the rear standard K, with sole and crossbrace connecting the same, all cast in one piece, and curved inward andupward from the landside, and provided with a perforated lng upon the top of the front standard, to receive the handles, and with a cross-slot on the rear standard to allow lateral adjustment of the beam, substantially as shownand described.
