Description

Dec. 9, 1930. v. wlLLoUGHBY MINE CAR Filed Nov. 20, 1929 En? Y www mmf@ 1W.. m,
Patented Dec. 9, 1930 Y UNITED STATES PATENT oc1=l=1caI VICTOR WILLOUGHBY, OF BIDGEWOOD, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN CAR FOUNDRY COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY MINE CAR Application led November 20, 1929. Serial No. 408,501.
This invention relates to mine cars and more particularly to mine cars having bottoms formed of a plurality of dumping doors, and itis an object of this invention to provide an improved latching mechanism for the drop doors of cars of the type described, and it is also an object of this invention to provide a support for the latch operating means in cars of the type described which serves also as a journal box for the car axle and as a support for the hood which shields the latching mechanism.
With these and other objects in view, as will appear more fully hereinafter, the invention consists substantially in the construction, combination, location and relative arrangement o the parts, all as will be more fully herein set forth, as shown in the accompanying drawings and finally pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a partial vertical transverse section taken adjacent a car axle as. on the line 1-1 of Fig. 3 of a drop bottom mine car constructed in accordance with this invention, some parts being broken away to show other parts more clearly;
Fig. 2 is a view partly in top plan and partly in horizontal section, the section being taken substantially on the center line of the axle;
Fig. 3 is a partial vertical longitudinal section taken as on line 3 3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a partial vertical transverse section taken as on line 4-4 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a View in elevation of the combined journal box and support; and
Fig. 6 is a view in elevation of one of the latches.
' In the drawings, which show only suiiicient of the mine car to illustrate the appli cation of this invention thereto, there is shown a mine car of the general type shown in atent to Field, No. 1,631,313, of June 7, 192 and comprising a body havin an end sheet 1 and a side sheet 2 supporte upon a frame of which only a longitudinal sill 4 is shown. The frame is supported upon axles 6 having wheels 8 thereon, the axles 6 extending through openings in the longitudinal sills 4' and bein journaled in journal boxes 10 attached to te inner faces of the longitudinal sills 4. Each journal box 10 comprises a journal portion 12 and fiat wing portions 14 by which it is secured to the inner face of the vertical web of the longitudinal sill 4 inforcing plate 18 to the outer face of the web of the sill 4. Surrounding the journal portion of the box 10 and formed integral therewith is a substantially inverted U- by rivets 16, the rivets 16 also securing a reshaped inwardly projecting iange having j operation of the door 34 controls the operation of an adjacent door 36. The door 36 is supported at its free edge by means of spaced latches 38 which comprise a link or arm portion 40 provided with an opening 42, which receives the axle 6, and with a shoulder or lip 44 upon which rests the free edge of the door 36. Each latch 38 is also provided with the spaced projecting ribs 46 which form a slot which, when the latches are in position, receives a lug 48 formed integral with one of the ears 30 of the adjacent hinge'strap 32 and I positioned eccentrically thereon with respect. to the opening provided for the hinge pin 28. Each latch 38 is also provided with a shoulder 50 projecting oppositely to the ribs 46, the shoulder 50 being arranged so that when a pair of latches 38 are positioned on an axle 6, as shown in Fig. 1, the shoulders 5() of the latches will extend toward each other and the ribs 46 will project outwardly. The shoulders 50 are joined by an. angle bar 52 having a horizontal flan e 54 resting upon and attached to the shoul ers 50 and a vertical flange 56 projecting downwardly in front of the free edge of the door 36. With the angle bar 52 attached to the shoulders 50 the latches 38 will be held spaced apart on the axle 6 and the length of the an le bar 52 .is such that the latches 38 will beA eld with the lugs 48'on the hinge straps 32 in engagement 1n Each latch 38 Ais also formed with an opening 58 through which is inserted the hinge pin28 and the hinge pin is retained in position in the hinge strap 32 by means of a cotter 60 and washer 62 which prevents movement of the hinge pin towards the center of the car, while movement of the hinge pin towards the side of the car is prevented by the sill4. The shoulder 44 upon which the free edge of the door 36 rests projects some distance in advance of the vvertical flange 56 of vthe angle-bar 52 and in order to provide proper clearance between the latch and thedoor, the free edge of the door is partly cut away adjacent the latch 38.
To the anges of oppositely placed journal boxes are attached hoods 64 which are shaped to lit the flaring sides 20 and curved uplperv portion 22 of the journal box flanges an their lower edges are flared outwardly as at 66;/'the s read of the hoods being suflici'ent to cover t e free edge'of the door 36 and the inner or hinge edge of the door 34. The
hood 64 also se-rves as a tie or' brace between the sills 4.
In this construction, as in the patent mentioned above, operation of the end door of the car may be controlled by a suitable ramp (not shown) and the operation of the other doors is controlled by the operation of the door immediatel in advance; that is, the dropping of the oor 34 will operate through the lugs 48 to retract the latches 38, withdrawing the shoulders 44 from beneath the free edge of the door 36 and permitting the door 36 to drop. When the doors are closed iby engagement with a suitable track ramp,
as in the other construction, the door 36 is raised first and -the door 34 is raised thereafter.' Raising the`door-34 causes the lugs 48 to operate the latches 38 to position the shoulders 44 beneath the free edge of the door V36 and in case the door 36 is not in its normal closed position the vertical flange 56 of the angle bar 52 will engage the free edge of the door and force the door 36 to its normal closed position; the angle 52 thus serving as an abutment to inall position the door 36 and also serving, toget er with the hood 64, to prevent leakage of the contents ofthe car past the free edge of the door 36.
While the preferred form of the invention the exactdetails of construction shown and described as it is obvious that various modifications thereof within the scope of the claimsA will occur to persons skilled in the art.
