HANGER FOR FORMS 0N STEEL BEAM consmuc'rmn Filed Oct. 10,1928

A TTOR NE Y5.
Patented Dec. 9, 1930 PATENT OFFICE FELIX KAI-IN, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA HANGER FOR FORMS ON STEEL-BEAM GONSTRUCTIGN 'Application filed Gctober 10, 1928. 7 Serial No. 311,538.
My invention relates to the fire-proofing of steel beams in building construction, and
' more particularly to means for attaching the form for the concrete fire-proofingto the steel beam.
It is customary in the art to suspend the form into which the concrete fire-proofing is poured from the steel beam by means of wires which are hooked over the top of the beam and passed through the bottom of the form and twisted. This work is necessarily done by hand and requires a great deal of time and labor.
The principal object of my invention is to provide means by which the form can be attached to the beam quickly and easily. A second object is to provide a hanger for the described purpose which is readily adjustable to beams of diiierent width. Other'obje'cts and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following specification which should be read with the understanding that the form, construction and arrangement of the several parts may be varied within the scope of the claims hereto appended without departing from the spirit of the invention as expressed therein.
A preferred embodiment of my invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein 2- Fig. 1 is a transverse section showing. a form suspended from a steel beam by means of my hanger.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the hanger.
Figs. 3 and 4 are sectional details taken on the respective lines 33 and 44 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a detail of a longer hook used for attaching the hanger to wider beams.
In the drawings, the reference numeral 1 designates a steel beam of I section as commonly used in building. construction. The form, which is attached to said beam and into which the concrete fire-proofing is poured, is shown as comprising the'usual bottom board 2, side boards 3, and transverse supporting pieces, one of which is shown at 4.
My invention resides in the hanger now to be described for suspending the said form from the beam 1.
A fiat strip 5 of suitable metal, such as iron,
or soft steel, is provided at one end with an upwardly turned hook 6 adapted to engage one edge of the bottom flange of the beam 1. The end portions of the strip 5 are adapted to bear against the bottom of said beam, and its central portion is bent downwardly, as shown at 7 in Fig. l, to provide a space between it and the beam. The strip 5 is slotted for the greater portion of its length, the slot shown at 8 in Fig. 2 extending from the region of the liook6 to the opposite end of the strip. At said opposite end, one of the legs of the strip is bent downwardly and inwardly to form a hook 9, Fig. 1, and the end of the other leg is bent downwardly to form a spacing leg 10. At the end of the strip having the upwardly turned hook 6, a similar downwardly bent spacing leg 11 is formed, preferably by bending downwardly a portion of the material cut out in forming the slot 8. The legs 10 and 11 are adapted to bear against the bottom 2 of the form in order to properly space it from the bottom of the beam 1, as shown in Fig. 1.
The strip 5, described above, is secured to the form by means of a bolt 12 passing through the support 4: and the bottom of the form 2, and extending through the slot 8 in said stop. A nut 13 is screwed upon the upper end of the bolt 12, and its lower end may conveniently be provided with a wing or handle 14. The hanger is attached to the beam 1 by the hooked end 6 at one side and by an S-shaped removable hook 15, Figs. 1, 2 and 4, at the other side. The removable hook 15 lies within the slot 8 of the strip '5 with its upwardly bent end engaging the edge of the beam 1 and its downwardly bent end lying opposite to the downwardly bent hook 9 of said strip, as shown in Fig. 1. A wedge 16 is then driven between said oppositely disposed hooks thereby lockingthe strip 5, the book 15, and the bottom flange of the beam 1 together,
' The strip 5 can be attached to wider beams by providing longer removable hooks, as shown at 15 in Fig. 5. Therefore one size of strip can be used upon a number of'different widths of beams merely by providing extra removable hooks of the proper length, 1
7 thus facilitating manufacture and" reducing the stocks. I 7 a a In using the device the requisite number of strips 5 are first attached 'to'the format the place where the latter is made up. The form with the strips secured thereto is then placed in position aroundithe beam Land secured to it by the removableihooks. 161L116. the wedges 16.7 After the concrete has been a concrete,
poured and has'set, the;form is removed by unscrewing the bolts-'12, leaving the strips- .5, hooks 15, and wedges 16 embedded in the It will be apparent to those skilled in the artthat my hanger enables a form to be so v cured in position upon a beam with considerably less labor than iscommonly i'lecessary when the usual type of wire hanger-is used. Moreover, a-ll'the-partsof my device except the boltllwhieh is recovered, and the-nut ln can be manufactured cheaply and in quantitiesby stamping from sheet metal, "so that thecost of the 'mate'sria-l's used is no greater than, the cost ofJthe Wire used; in the ordisaid slot and to engage the other side of the 1 beam; means for connecting said members nary method" of hanging.- I le umes,- @QoflratesPasoi-ng the o w My device also lntipon to the beam, such spacing being deter-, m-inedbythe legs loand 11 and the lateralposltionjof the hanger in the form, and: since the hunger, is secured to the form while the, latter is on the floor or work-bench, the lat-v eral positioning of saidhanger is easily and accurately accomplished. 1
Iclaim':;..( p p .1 A device for hanging forms from beams comprising a slotted member having means atone ende to engage oneside ofthe beam; a'connecting member adapted to lie within together to clampthem upon the-beam; and
means for removably securing said slotted member to the form; a t
