wardly in outwardly spaced relation with the composite bar 22-22 and constitutes a. tail 29. A suitable spring 30 is provided for engaging the dog 27 with the teeth 6. This spring is preferably received at its inner end in a socket 3l formed in a block 32 which is secured by rivets 33 between the rear ends oi' the plate portions 23, and displacement of the outer end of the spring may be prevented by a stud 34 on the dog 27.
The rear ends of the plate portions 24 are provided with laterally spaced lugs 35 between which the lower end of a short vertical link 3G is pivoted at 37. The lever 15 is provided with two arms 88 which straddle the upper end of the link 36 and the composite bar 22-22, said arms being pivoted to the link at 39. Between the free ends of the arms 38 and located between the shank 5 andthe composite bar 22, isa work-performing dog 40. Between its ends, this dog is pivoted at 4l to the arms 38, and an appropriate spring device 42 acts against the dog 40 and re-acts against the composite bar 22-22, to engage said dog with the teeth G. In the angle be! tween the composite bar 22-22 and the lower yoke 24--24, the former is provided with cam portions 43 adapted to strike the lower end oi the dog upon maximum upward movement of the lever 15, so as to at that time eiiect release of said dog as shown in Fig. 3. Lever l5 is provided betweenthe arms 38 with a shoulder 44 which strikes the tail 29 of the dog 27 at the same time the dog 40 strikes the cams 43, and at this time said shoulder eiiects release of said dog 27. Thus, while the slide S and the shank 5 may be relatively moved to compress the valve spring, by oscillation of l the lever 15, upward swinging of this lever to l the maximum will immediately effect release of both dogs 2?-40, thereby allowing the tool to be quickly and easily removed. Moreover, this capability o'l the tool, allows it to be quickly and easily opened to the maximum Vlor initial engagement with the work. i
On account of the excellent results obtainable from the details disclosed, they are preterably followed. However, as above stated, variations may be made within the scope ol the invention as claimed.
I claim z- 1. In a. device of the class described, a shank having longitudinally spaced teeth,
, a slide on said shank, a lever mounted on said slide and having a work-performing dog engageable with said teeth, and a holding dog also mounted on said slide and engageable with said teeth, said slide having a portion to strike and release said work-performing dog when the lever is moved to one extreme position, said lever being provided with a portion to then strike and release said holding dog.
2. In a device of the class described, a shank having longitudinally spaced teeth;
a slide embodying upper and lower yokes surrounding said shank, and a bar connecting said yokes and spaced outwardly from the toothed edge of said shank; a lever mounted on the slide and having two arms straddling said bar, a work-performing dog between said bar and said shank and pivoted between its ends between the front ends of said arms, the upper end of said dog being engageable with said teeth, and a holding dog pivoted to the upper yoke and engageable at its upper end with said teeth, said holding dog having a downwardly projecting tail spaced outwardly from said bar,
said slide having a portion to strike the lower end ot said work-performing dog and release the Ylatter when the lever is raised to the maximum, said lever having a portion to then strike said tail of the holding dog and release the latter.
' 8. In a device of the class 'described,'a shank having longitudinally spaced teeth; a slide embodying upper and lower yokes surrounding said shank, and a bar connecting said yokes and spaced outwardly from the toothed edge of said shank, the lower end of said bar being provided with a lug, a short vertical link pivoted at its lower end to said lug, a lever having two arms which straddle the upper end of said link and said bar, a ulcrum connecting said arms with said link, a work-performing dog between said bar and said shank and pivoted between its ends between the front ends of said arms, the upper end of said dog being engageable with said teeth, and a holding dog pivoted to the upper yoke and engageable at its upper end with said teeth, said holding dog having a downwardly projecting tail spaced outwardly from said bar, said slide having a portion to strike the lower end of said work-performing dog and release the latter when the lever is raised to the maximum, said lever having a portion to then strike said tail of the holding dog and release the latter.
4. In a device of the class described, two opposed vertically elongated metal plates each of frame-like form and embodying two parallel vertical portions and upper and lower end portions, the vertical portions of the two plates being secured together to provide vertical composite bars while said end portions of said plates are spaced apart to provide upper and lower yokes, a holding dog` pivoted between two upper corners of said plates and having a tail projecting downwardly at the Outer edge of one of said composite bars, the plate corners at the lower end of this bar being provided with laterally spaced lugs, a short vertical link whose lower end is pivoted between said lugs, a lever having two arms straddling the upper end of said link and said one composite bar and fulcrumed to the former, a work-performing dog pivotallymounted betvveen the free ends of said arms at the inner edge of said one of said composite bars, this inner bar edge being` provided with aV cam i portion to strike the lower end of the Workperforming dog and release the latter upon maximum upward swinging of the lever,
said lever being provided with a portionv to y then strike said tail of the holding dog and release the latter, and a shank passing through said yokes and having teeth co-acting with said dogs. V
