The invention proposes a dolls head consisting ofa form, and a fab ric glued on the V outside-of said form andpainted to simulate features; It is proposedi to construct the form of'pape'r pulp, paper plaster or compo- 'sition and the fabric 'of knitted materialso as to closely fitupon the' form; It is further proposed that said fabric beof tubular shape 2 having anopen bottomand sewed closedfat the top upon said form. 1 The invention has for a;further object to make a painted feature upon the fabric movable or Changeable upon motion of certain portions of saidfabrio. "The invention also proposes a method for engaging "atubular knitted fabric capable'of stretching over a form previously covered with liquid glue, sewingthe opened top of'the tubular form. closed so that it tightly fits the forni, and
- applyingv coloring upon the form to form features.
It is a further object of this invention to, provide a method for the manufacturing of the article mentioned, which includes engaging a dome shape feature colored knitted fabric capable of stretchingover a form previously covered with liquid glue so that like features of the fabric and formcoincide. For further comprehension of the inven- 'tion, and of the objects'a-nd advantages there of, reference will be had to the followingzdescription and accompanying drawings, and
to the appended claimsin which the various novel features-of the invention are more, particularly set forth.
, In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a dolls head constructed according to this invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevational view of a dolls head similar to"Fig."1, but niustmmg a modification of the invention. f V
; F g. 3 is a fragmentary horizontal section- 1 V l jialviewftaken on the line 3- 3 of Fig. 1. E an objectthe prov'i- 7 4' a fragmentary plan view'of Fig. l. F1g.51s a fragmentary horizontalsecti'ona1 (view takenon the line 5 5*of Fig.2.
Fig 6 a fragmentary sectional view taken'onthe line 66 of Fig.2.
F gs: 1, 3 and 4 a tubular knittedfabric 10' capable of stretchinghas been shown en-, gagedupon a form 11; The fabric 10 need not'beknittedas long as it may stretch to snugly engage the form, The form is shaped to present various features such as eyebrows 12, eye balls 13, a'nose 14, cheeks 15, etc, The tube before engagedupon the form should'be' ofasufliciently small diameter so that it mnst bestretched, and thenwhen engaged snugly fits the form. i
'The fabric 10' is pasted, glued or similarly secured upon the'form'. The fabrictube 10 is Eclbsedht the top'by gathering it as indi cated 'byreferencenumeral 16 andthen ap} plying stitches 17 to sew it closed. It should be so sewn that it tightly engages the form and simulates hair; f Coloring is applied on the fabric so as tojsimulate various features,
such as eye brows'12, eye balls '13,"a nose 14-,cheeksh15 and soon; And all o'fthese features uponthe fabric should be congruent ith the featuresof the form so that 'a dolls headfor other object is produced. i p The form has shown is of hollow: construction' and preferably composed of wood pulp, paperplaster, composition or the like. The lower end 'ofthe fabric indicated by ref-L erence numeral 18 is shown torn ofi? from the: form andturned upwards merely for illustrationypurposesL The method for manufacturing the dolls 7 head shown in Figs. 1,3 and 4, consists in engaging a'tu'bular knitted fabricof a length: slightly longer than the length of the formand of a diameter smaller {than the; diameter of theform and capable of being'stretched;
over the form which has previouslyibeen covered with liquid' glue, than sewing the top of the tubular fabric together to closethe top andf caus'e itto snuglyengag'e against the form and produce gathering simulating hair. After the glue which secures the fabric upon the form has dried, coloring may be applied to simulate various features.
In Figs. 2 and 5, a modified form of the device has been disclosed which consists in a dome shaped fabric 1O engaged upon the form 11 in a manner similar to the preferred form just described. The dome shaped fabric is of a size slightly smaller than the form so that when engaged. on the form it must be stretched and thereafter snugly engages all portions of theform. Since it is of dome shape, it is closed at the top and may be properly painted to simulate hair. The fabric 10 used inFigs. 1,3 and A has a rear seam indicated by reference numeral 20. This seam is produced when the fabric is knitted upon a full-fashioned knitting machine. The fabric lr fi as shown in Fig. ,2 has no seam whatsoever and may be produced upon a circular knitting machine.
The process of manufacturing the device as shown in Figs. 2 and 5 is similar tothe one previously described and may be reviewed as consisting in engaging the dome shaped knitted fabric capable of stretching over the form previously covered with liquid glue. Another. way of carrying out the method would be to paint the features upon the fabric before applying itupon the form and. when applied upon the form so positioning it that like features of the form and fabric coincide.
In Fig. 6, a modifiedrform of the device has been illustrated which consists in aform 11, and a fabric 10 engaged on the form. The form has various features, such as eye brows 12, eye balls 13, etc. The fabric has similar features coinciding with the features on the form. eye brow features upon the fabric and 13' the eye ball features upon'the fabric. The
fabric is only partially glued to the. form so as to be held downin portions only, providing loose portions which may be moved. The
heavy line 22 between a portion of the fabric. and the form indicates glue holding these parts together at those portions only, providing a space 23 between other portions. Amusement may be had by pulling theloose portions of the fabric so as to change theexpression of the features. Thus, if the loose portions shown in Fig. 6 would be pulled, the eye brows upon the fabric could be moved.
It is to be understood'that the top gathering may be replaced by stitches and that the entire doll body may be made by the same process or animal bodies may also be simulated.
It is also to be understood that the covering material maybe of any suitable fabric, such as sateen, felt, etc.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be. understood that I do not limit myself to Reference numeral 12 indicates the the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is 1. A method for manufacturing a dolls head or similar article, consisting in engaging a tubular knitted fabric of smaller diameter than a form and capable of stretching over said form, previously partially covering said form with liquid glue, sewing the opened top of the tubular fabric closed so that it tightly engages the form and applying coloring upon. the fabric to form features.
2.. In a method for manufacturing a dolls head of the class described, the step of engaging a dome shaped knitted fabric capable of stretchingover a form previously partially covered with liquid glue, said fabric before engagement upon the form being of a size smaller than the formso. that when engaged it snugly engages the form- 3. In a method for the manufacture of a dollshead, the steps of forcing a tubular knitted fabric of a smaller diameter than a certain form upon said form so that upon subsequent contraction it assumes the shape of the sides of the form, and sewing. the open. top of-said tubular. fabric together so as to. hold said portion to the-shape of the form- In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature. i
