This invention relates to new and useful improvements in work holders adapted to be used by seamstresses and others who do needle work, the main object of the inven- 5 tion being to provide a holder of this character which may be readily clamped to the arm of a chair, to the table of a sewing machine or to any other convenient place and to which the work may be attached in order will that it may be held taut; by drawing upon the goods with one hand leaving the other hand free to use a needle, a stitch ripping tool or a pair of scissors. 7

Now having particular reference to-the drawings, my novel work holder consists of a table or arm chair engaging unit consisting of a body member 5 of suitable metal and of substantially U-formation as illustrated in Figures and 6 one longitudinal wall thereof being longerthan the other said longer wall adapted for engagement upon the top side of a table A or upon the top side of the arm of a chair or other suitablesupport,the lower shorter leg having a threaded opening 6 therethrough to which is threaded a clamping bolt 7 the inner end thereof having a swivel cushion head 8for engagement with the under side of the table or arm chair whereby said unit is rigidly secured thereto.
Intermediate the end of the upper longer wall of this member 5there is formed at the edges thereof upstanding flanges 9-9 between the forward ends of which is arranged a cushion block or plate 10. For cooperation with this unit and especially the upper Wall thereofto provide a work clamp there is arranged upon the top side thereof an L- shaped clamp jaw 11 between the innermost ends of which is arrangeda transverse coil spring 12 the end convolutes of whichare extended forwardly to providearms 13-13 the ends of which are bentinwardly for engagement within openingsin the adjacent flange 9 of the member 5 as well as the adjacent one of similar downturned flanges 14 44 in the horizontal wall of the L-shaped; clamp 11 the vertical wall thereof providing closed with respect to the complemental jaw of the table engaging clamp member 5.
It will thus be seen that I have provided understood that some changes may bemade v therein without aifecting the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my inventiom what I claim is A work clamp comprising a pair of superposed flatj aw members, an upstanding arm formed on the rear end of the upper jaw member, a depending arm formed on the for a handle whereby this jaw may be opened or y i f ward end of the lower jaw member, an in- .wardly extending leg on said arm arranged in parallel relation to the lower jaw, a clamp bolt carried by said leg, longitudinally extending flanges formed on the side edges of the jaw members, a transversely extending coil spring arranged between said jaw members having arms formed on the opposite ends thereof anchored in the opposite flanges of said members, and fiat cushion jaw faces carried by the jaw members and confined between said flanges.
