The invention has for its object to provide an improved device oiithis kind which may be operated in one Way normally to remove elementsquickly, or in another way to secure greater power when the element to be removed is-mounted very tightly and will not yield to the first method of operation;
According to thefpresent invention two screw-threaded members are provided, one having a thread of a longer pitch than the other.
The invention consists in the construction, combination or arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings which illustrate by way of example one convenient embodiment of the invention,
Figure 1 is a section on line 11 of Figure 2, and
a Figure 2 is an end elevation of the improved device.
-The device comprises a cap member 1 and an annular adapter member 2 shaped on its inner surface to engage the element to be removed. As shown, the element to be removed v is an automobile wheel, the hub of which is indicated at 3 in Figure 1. In this arrange- Fw rnent the inner surface of the adapter is provided with an internal screwthread l to en gage that of the hub 3. The adapter mem. her is split as at 5 so that the adapter has a degree of resiliency. The adapter is removably mounted in the cap member by means of a screwthread 6 which is preferablya coarse buttress thread as shown; I v Mounted in a screwthreaded hole in the end wall of the cap 1 is a sleeve in which is centrally mounted a bolt 8. The sleeve 7 an dbolt- 8 are provided with means such as heads 9 and 10, whereby they may be engaged by suitable tools for causing their rotation.
The screwthreads 11 and 12 on the sleeve 7 and bolt 8; are not of thesame pitch. For example, the thread 11 may conveniently have nine threads to the inch while the screwt-hread has ten threads to theinch, though the invention is not limited to this relationship between the two threads. a
In operation the adapter is applied to the element to be removed and the cap 1 is then screwed on to the adapter 2 as shown in Figure 'l. The bolt 8 is then rotated until its inner end abuts against the axle 13 from which theelement is to be removed. Continued'rotation of the bolt 8 first causes the adapter to contract slightly, by reason of the form otthe' thread 6, which ensures that the thread 4; will grip the element 3 securely.
As the bolt 8 can no longer advance, the
cap 1 and sleeve 7, together with theadapter 2 and element 3, will be drawn away from the axle 13. i i
Should the element 3 be so firmly mounted on its axle that the abovementioned operation will not remove it, the bolt 8 may be held'stationary by means of a wrench and the sleeve 7 rotated by means of another wrench. As the sleeve 7 has a thread of longer pitch than that of the bolt 8, it will cause the cap to be withdrawn a slightly greater distance than it advances on the bolt 8. Vith the thread relationship ment oned above, one revolution of the sleeve 7 will cause it to withdraw the cap 1 one ninth or an inch witlrrespect to the sleeve, but as the sleeve will-advance onetenth of an inch on the bolt 8, the net withdrawal of the cap and the element 3 'will b c the ditli'ercnce between one ninth and one tenth of an inch, namely one ninetieth of an inch. A great mechanical advantage is thus obtained which will make it possible to effect the removal of any wheel or other element.
Various modifications may bemane with out departing from the. scope oi the invention as defined in the appended claim.
What I claim is: I
I A device for removing wheels or other elements, comprising a hollow cylindrical cap member, therebeing a scr-ewthreaded hole at one end otsaid member, a screwthreaded sleeve provided with a central bore mounted in said hole, a bolt mounted in said central lijll 'member to contract said adapter fbore in said sleeve and having a serewthread of shorter pitch than the outer thread on the sleeve, and a spht, annular adapter member -fitted in the opposite end of the cap member,
there being means provided on said annular adapter member coeperating with the cap member to embrace an element to be removed.
