Description

Nov, 1s, 1930. H. BQLLMANN 1,781,745
` APPARATUS FOR DISTILLING FATTY ACIIVDS Filed Dec. 16, 1925 Patented Nov. 18, 1930 UNITED sTrrnsv PATENT OFFICE] HERMANN BOLLMANN, OF HAMBURG, GERMANY APPAR-ATUS FOR DISTILLING FATTY ACIDS 'Application led December 16, 1925, Seriavl'N'o. 75,744, and in Germany February 2, 1925.
This invention relates to apparatus for distilling fatty acids. In the distillation of fatty A acids in column apparatus on the counter current principle, in which the fatty 5 acids are, led, in a finely divided state', in 'countercurrent to superheated steam conducted upwardly, there exists the danger that the steam loaded with the volatile constituents of the fatty acids may sink downwardly l again. This danger can be' obviated by the apparatus forming the subject of the invention. A
According to the invention the apparatus consists of a column made, for example, from I chamotte, surrounded by a ,metal jacket and adapted to be subjected to a vacuum. The
column, which is filled with a retarding lilling, for example, Raschig rings, is provided with a number of intermediate partitions, 2 each of which has a substantially central opening or openings. By means of the reduction of cross section effected by these intermediate partitions provided with openings, an increase in the velocity of flow of the steam is obtained at the levels of the partitions, (as compared with the velocity between the partitions) and the movement in the reverse direction of steam loaded with fattyacid vapours is thereby prevented.
One example of an apparatus according to the invention is diagrammatically illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein the apparatus is shown as being constituted by' a column l, made preferably of chamotte sur- 5 vrounded with a metal jacket 8, which is adaptedto be subjected to vacuum and is provided with a number of intermediate partitions 2 having central openings as in'dicated in the drawing. Steam at, for example, 280 C, enters from below by the `pipe 3 while the fatty acids to -be distilled are introduced into the column 1 through the pipe f1 and trickle down in a finely divided state over the retarding illing of, for example, Raschig rings (not shown) vpresent therein. The vapors of the fatty acids and steam, leave the apparatus by the pipe 6, while the residue (containing non-vaporizable matters) may 5 be drawn off through the pipe 5. j
I claim In an app aratus. for distilling fatty acids,
the combination of a column comprising a chamber, partltlons spaced at intervals across said chamber and defining a plurality of compartments, sai-d .partitions having such construction as to prevent the substantial accumulation of lin uid thereon 'and having free 'openings near the center of each of the same for permitting jthe passage of Vapor, the remaining parts of said partition being impervious to the lpassage. of vapor, means for introducing fatty acid near the top of said hoods. f
In testimo ny whereof I aiix my signature. HERMANN BOLLMANN.
