those devices intended for the use of linemen wire as fence wire and telephone wire, it is desirableto have'a' construction which will work equally well between two wire ends and I also between a poster pole cross arm and the wire to be drawn taut. i
The primary object of this inventionfls the provision of animproved wire pulling device. I Another object of this invention is the provision of an improved wire pulling or stretching device with which it is possible'to take up slack, hold the slack and then take up more slack.
Another object of'this invention is the provisionof such a stretching or pulling device which may be engaged with the side of a post opposite to the directionfrom which the wire is being pulled and which will permit of the use of a hammer in the splicing, nailing, or
staplingoperation for securing the wire in place and without awkwardness on the part of the operator and without losing slack already-taken up by the pulling device.
Another and further object of'this invention is the provision of such an improved wirestretcher or puller that thetight wire may be brought up to a corner post and secured at a point where it is tight. I

Connected to the carriage 15 by the link 19 is a lever 20. This lever 20 is shown of a U- shape form, the two portions of the U passing on opposite sides of the elongated body member 10. In addition to the pin connection 21 which pivots the lever 20 and the link 19 together, the lever 20 is provided with'afulcrum which is in the form of a pin 22. At the end of the elongated body member 10, is a guide-carrying arm 24, carrying'a guide'wheel 25, pivoted thereon. To secure rying arm 24. If the wire should be still too slack after first reaching the extreme position adjacent the extension 12, the free end of the wire isbrought around the eXtension 12 and fastened between the gripping surfaces of the parts 29 and '30. This holds the slack 'al ready taken up. By holding the pin 22 out of engagement from the holding devices 11 and swinging the lever 20 against the adj acent end of the carriage 15, by exerting pressure on the lever 20 (to the left in Fig. 2), the projection 23 may be released. The carriage may then be moved back adjacent the guide supporting member 24: or to such distance as the operator estimates will be necessary. The tightening operation is now repeated and when sufiiciently taut, the Wire is stapled or nailed as already described.
If is desired to tighten two wires for the purpose "of splicing, the wire ends are securedin the two wire holding or gripping means 17,18, and 29, 30. It believed to be clear to one skilled in the art that l have produced a wire pulling machine which will serve the double purpose of drawing two wires together and drawing one wire toward a cross arm or post. In addition, the feature of taking up slack, holding what has been taken up and then taking up more slack, is important since it permits of the use of a shorter elongated body portion th'aiiwould otherwise be necessary. This means a lighter machine as a whole.
While I have shown and described in de tail an embodiment of my invention, I desire to have it understood that this'is merely iilustrative and that modifications and changes may be made Without departing from the spirit of my invention and within the scope of the appended claims;

A wire pulling machine comprising an elongated body member having spaced holding devices therealong, a pulling carriage mounted on the body member for indveiiient therealong, a lever having connection with the carriage and constructed to have a seits outer end looped and pointing inthe general direction of the length of the body portion, the open endof the loop being of a size to receive substantially all of the carriage when moved along the body member.

A wire pulling machine comprising an elongated body member having spaced holding devices therealong, a pulling carriage mounted on the body member for movement therealong, a lever having connection with the carriage and constructed to have selective engagement with the holding devices, an extension onthe body portion and having its outer end looped and pointing in the general direction of the length ofthe body portion,
the open end of the loop being of a size to receive substantially all of the carriage when moved along the body member and a wirealining guide extending from the end of the body member opposite to the extension.

A wire pulling machine comprising an elongated body member having spaced holding devices therealong, a pulling carriage mounted on the body member for movement therealong, a lever having connection with the carriage and constructed to have selective engagement with the holding devices, the connection comprising a link connected at one of its ends to the carriage and at the '1 other end to the lever, an extension on the body portion and having its outer end looped l and pointing in the general direction of the length of the body portion, the open end of y the loop being of a size to receive substan- V I tially all of the carriage when moved along the body member. a V
5. A wire pulling machine comprising an elongated body member having spaced holding devices therealong, a pulling carriage mounted on the body member for movement therealong, a lever having connection with the carriage and constructed to have selective engagement with the holding devices, the connection comprising a link connected at one of its ends to the carriage and at the other end to the lever, an extension on the body portion and having its outer end looped and pointing in the general direction of the length of the body portion, the open end of the loop being of a size to receive substantially all of the carriage when moved along the body member, and a wire-alining guide extending from the end ofthe body member opposite to the extension.

A wire pulling machine comprising an elongated body member having spaced holding devices therealong, a wire holding device at one end of the body member, a pulling carriage mounted on the body memberfor movement therealong, means on the carriage for engaging the spaced holding devices, to prevent backward movement during the tightentive engagement with the holding devices, the
connection comprising a link connected at:

7 A wire pulling machine comprising an elongated body member having spaced holding devices therealong, a wire holding device at one end 'ofthe body member, a pulling carriage mounted on the body member for movement therealong,means on the carriage for engaging the spaced holding devices, to prevent backward movement during the tightening operation, a lever having connection with the carriage and constructed to have selective engagement with the holding devices, the'connection comprising a link conend ofl'the loop being ofa size to receive substantially all of the carriage when moved s along the body member, and a wire-alining guide extending from the end of the body member opposite to the extension.
