The invention is illustrated by means of the accompanying drawings showing the preferred form of my invention,on which:
Fig. 1 shows a refrigerating cabinet and machinery and apparatus therefor, in crosssection, taken on line 1 1 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 2 is a cross-section taken on line 2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a cross-section takenon line 33 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the base plate taken on line 44 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a view showing a means in detail to support the condenser.
The cabinet is designated generally by reference character R. Reference character 10 designates the food space which is to be cooled. Access to the food space is had through doors 11 and 12. The food space is insulated by insulation 13. The insulation is placed between an outer steel shell 14 and an inner porcelain liner 15. The type of cabinet construction used is not of importance to the present invention.
Below food space 10 is a lower machine compartment 16. This compartment is formed between side walls 17 and 18 and between rear wall 19 and a removable front plate 20. Base plate 21 constitutes the bottom of this compartment. On the base plate is mounted a machine base 22 carrying a motor 23 and a compressor 24. The motor and compressor are arranged with parallel shafts and connected by means of pulleys 25 and 26 and belt 27 so that the motor drives the compressor. The motor and compressor shafts extend fore and aft of the lower compartment. In the rear of the cabinet is a condenser flue 28 which extends from the base plate 21 to the top plate 29 of the cabinet. The flue extends between side walls 17 and 18; its front side is made up of the rear wall of the food space 10 and plate 19; and its rear side is formed by thin flat plate 30 which extends from base plate 21 to within a short distance of top plate 29, leaving an air inlet 31 which extends transversely across the entire cabinet. The condenser flue is very narrow.- Within this flue is situated the condenser 32 which is formed of a zig-zag. tube. The tube extends transversely across the flue, then forms a loop and extends transversely back to adjacent the other side and so continues, covering substantially the entire portion of the flue above the bottom plate 33 of the food space. The condenser is secured between bars 34 which are attached to the rear wall of the food space and retaining strips 35. The condenser tubing is clamped between members 34 and 35 by means of'bolts 36 or other suitable fastening means. Bars 34 may be grooved to form recesses for the'tubing. The discharge head 37 of the compressor is connected by a length of tubing 38 to the upper end of the condenser. The lower end of the condenser is connected by a length of tubing 39 to a float valve 40 which comprises a valve member 41 controlling flow from the condenser into tubing 42 and thence to the evaporator coil 43 which is situated inside the space to be cooled, and preferably, within a brine tank 47. The float valve arrangement admits refrigerant to tubing 42 when a given amount has accumulated after having been condensed in the condenser.
In the evaporator coil 43, the refrigerant is evaporated and passes through conduit 44 to switch mechanism 45 which starts and stops the motor on rise and fall of suction line pressure, and thence to the intake 46 of culation for refrigerant from the compressor through conduit 38, thence downwardly through condenser 32, thence through conduit 39 to the float valve, through the fioat valve and conduit 42 to the evaporator, through the evaporator and from the evaporator through conduit 44 back to the suction side of the compressor. Air is drawn downwardly through flue 28 by means of a fan 49 mounted on the motorshaft and which is placed within a-cylindrical exhaust conduit 50 attached to the edge of an opening 51 in plate 19. Walls 17, 18, 19 and 20 are substantially solid and tight except for opening 51 and the air drawn over the condenser tubes by fan 49 is forced to pass laterally through compartment 16, in contact with the motor and compressor and out through openings 52 5 formed in the bottom of base plate 21. Thus only a single fan is used which causes induced draft over the condenser in the rear flue and at the same time gives suflicient circulation to cool the motor and compressor. While I have described, in detail, the preferred form of my invention as at present contemplated, it is to be understood that I am not limited to the apparatus hereinbefore described for carrying out the invention and that the appended claim is'likewise not so limited.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
Refrigerating apparatus comprising a cabnet including a food space, a machine compartment and a condenser space, said machine compartment being surrounded by walls including a rear wall between the machine compartment and the condenser space, said rear Wall having an air passage therethrough near one end of the machine compartment and the bottom wall of the machine compartment having apertures therethrough near the other endof the compartment, the walls of the machine compartment including the front wall being otherwise unapertured, a condenser in said condenser space, a compressor in said machine compartment adjacent the apertures in said bottom wall, a motor in said machine compartment adjacent the air passage in said rear Walland a single fan mounted on the shaft of said motor in said air passage and arranged to cause flow of air downwardly past said condenser in said condenser space, through said air passage, past said motor and compressor and through said apertures.
