The invention relates to means for clearing out or bringing the numeral wheels of calculating machines or other registers to zero registering position;

In these drawings, the numeral 13 designates a wheel, loosely mounted upon supparts porting shaft 14, and suitably marked on its ripheral face, as, for instance, with the igital characters 1 to 9 and zero, in progressive order. A. pointed projection 15 is rigidi mounted on the hub of the wheel 13. A roc shaft 16 extends parallel to shaft 14 and is provided with one or more arms 17,

to which are pivoted upper and lower clearing plates 18 and 19. These plates are provided each with a contact portion 20, the two contact portions in the normal position of the parts lying in engagement with each other and forming a salient angle directed toward shaft 14. The plates 18 and 19 are cut away to form gulding cam faces 21 adapted to co-operate with the hub of wheel 13 or other sleeve member carried by shaft 1 4 to impart the desired movement to the contacting portions 20, when shaft 16 is rocked.
Shaft 16 being in normal position and projection 15 having assumed any radial position during the registering movement of numeral wheel 13, said wheel is cleared as follows:
Shaft 16 is rocked in a clockwise direction as viewed in Fig. 1, so that the contact portions 20, being moved first directly toward shaft 14, will engage projection 15, if said projection lies to the left of shaft 14 (Fig. 1) and will cam said projection upwardly or downwardly, carrying numeral wheel 13 therewith. The movement being continued, the cam faces 21 will impart an arcuate movement about shaft 14 to the contact portions 20 (Fig. 2) until projection 15 is brought to the right of the shaft 14, to the position illustrated in Fig. 3, in whichposi- .which a spring click 23 serves to hold said wheel in position as adjusted.
Preferably, the contact portions 20 will be made so that in normal position the point of one portion extends beyond theother portion, so that as they are moved toward shaft 14, the projection 15 will encounter a single edge, which may throw the projection in lmi ` either direction and prevent catching of the point of projection 15 between the two portions 20. This catchinggof the point of the projection is further avoided `by bringing the contact portions 20 into the path o f movement of projection 15 between two positions of rest of the point of said projection, as determined by the spring click 23. Should the` toothed' wheel acted upon by the click have an even number of teeth, as in a ten-place wheel arrangement, one of the members 20 must therefore be advanced a greater radial distance around shaft .14, and the other member a lesser distance. Thus, in the ten-point arrangement shown, one member 20 acts upon projection 15 through ivetooth-spaces and the other through four tooth-spaces.
The`form of the invention illustrated in Fig. 4 differs from the form above described only in that the guiding cam faces 21 are formed in a frame member 24, plates 18 and 19 being provided with followers 25 working in the cam slots of the frame member. The
numeral wheel 26, illustrated in Eig. 4, is also shown with a ldetent gear 27 designed for a nineteen-point wheel; that is to say, a wheel such as employed in revolutions counting registers and bearing two reversely arranged series of digital characters.
The invention is applicable to machines widely different types, but is shown herein as applied to a calculating machine Vconstructed in accordance with the co-pending application Serial No. 337,073 of E. F. Britten, Jr., filed February 2, 1929, and entitled Registering mechanism. As applied to this machine it may be convenient to use the form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3 in connection with the differential registration wheels 13, and the form of the invention illustrated in Fig. 4 with the revolutions counting Wheels.
As applied to this machine, it is necessary in clearing the numeral wheels 13 to raise the carriage upon pivot 28 (Figs. 6 and 7), so that the gear-teeth of numeral Wheel 13 will clear the teethof intermediate gear 12. F or this purpose, shaft 16 is provided with a cam 29 operable u o n part 30, supported by the main frame o the machine, to raise the carriage as stated. This action is similar to that of the disclosure of United States Patent 1,335,349, issued to E. E. Phinney on March 30, 1920 and 'entitled Automatic carriage raising means for calculating machines.
A full stroke ratchet 31 is provided fast on shaft 16, said ratchet preventing the return of rock shaft 16 to normal position from a partially operated position. -At the fullstroke position of shaft 16, spring pressed pf wl 38 will escape from ratchet 31 and upon the return stroke of said shaft will pass freel along the rear facer of the ratchet mem er. When rock shaft 16 is held in paring a pair of relatively movable projectiontially toperated position by ratchet 31, the carriage 2 will also be raised `by means of cam 29, this raising of the carriage operating through lock lever 32 to lock one of the drive shafts 4 of the machine,.in accordance with the disclosure Vof United States Patent 1,384,634 issued to E. E. Phinney on June 12, 1921, and entitled Carriage lock for calculating machines. A cam 33 is arranged to act similarly to cam 29 upon partial rocking of clearing shaft 34 related to the counting Wheels 26, said cam acting upon member 30 through the mediumv of part 39. Shaft 34 is also provided with full-stroke mechanism, similar to that used in connection with shaft 16. The shafts 16 and 34 are connected at the right-hand end of carriage 2 with clearing levers 35 and 36 (Fig. 5) and it will be seen from the above description that upon partial movement of either clearing lever the driving means of the calculating machine will be locked, and that it will then be necessary for the operator to throw such clearing lever into full clearing position before proceeding with a calculation.
Clearing levers 35 and 36 act in opposite directions, inasmuch as the clearing plates of Wheels 13 and wheels 26 o'perate in opposite directions, and the degree of movement of the levers necessaryv to clear the Wheels is reduced by the connections 42, 43, so that the levers may be simultaneously operated, by pinching them between the finger and thumb of the operator. The radial throw of the plates 18 and 19 may be regulated by approriatefsetting of eccentric Stops 40, 41, the atter also forming an abutment by means of which lever 36 may be used to raise carriage 2 so that it may be shifted laterally by means of this lever.
I claim: 1. In a register having a shaft and a numeral wheel mounted thereon and providedI with a. projection; a clearing device includengaging members operating upon opposite sides of said shaft and collectively acting to bring a given character on said Wheel Vfrom any radial position into -registering position.
2. In a register having a shaft and a numeral wheel mounted thereon and provided with a projection; a clearing device including a pair of relatively movable projection-engaging members operating upon opposite sides of'said shaft, and a common operating member adapted to move the projection-engaging members simultaneously to brin a given character on said wheel from any ra ial position into registering position.
3. In a register having a shaft' and a numeral wheel mounted thereon and provided With a projection; a clearing device including a pair of relatively movable projectionenga-glug members operating upon opposite sides of said shaft, and anoperating member adapted to impart simultaneous movements of different extent to the proj ection-engaging members, to bring a given character on said wheel from any radial position into registering position. i
4. In a register having a shaft and a numeral Wheel mounted thereon and provided with a projection; a. clearing device including a pair of relatively movable projectionengaging members operable to bring a given character on said wheel from any radial position into registering position and to confine the projections between the members.
5. In a register having a shaft and a numeral wheel mounted thereon and provided witlra projection; a clearing device including a pair of relatively movable projectionengaging members operable to rotate Asaid wheel forwardly or reversely to bring a given character on said wheel from any radial osition into registering position and to con ne the projection between the members.
6. In a register having a shaft and a numeral Wheel mounted thereon and provided with a projection a clearing device including a pair ofprojection-engaging members operating on opposite sides of said shaft, and
- means, including cam surfaces, 'for imparting an arcuate movement about the axis of said shaft to the engaging surfaces of said members to bring a given character on said wheel from any radial position into registering position.
7 In a register having a shaft and a numeral wheel mounted thereon and provided with a projection a clearing device includingv a pair of projection-engaging members having angularly disposed contact portions, and means for moving said members toward the shaft with the contact portions collectively forming a continuous salient, and for thereafter imparting an arcuate movement about the axis of said shaft to the engaging surfaces of said members to bring a given character on said wheel from any radial position into registering position.
8. In a register having a shaft and a nmeral wheel mounted thereon and provided with a projection; a` clearing device including a pair of relatively movable projectionengagmg members, and means for advancin said members oppositely around said sha and for confining said projection therebetween to hold the related wheel in zero-registering position.
