, UNITE STATES PATENT 'OFrIoE.
BENJAMINBROWN, OF sTAPLEToN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN PROTECTORS lN TAPPING BARRELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 78,104, dated May 30, 1876; application filed March 22, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BENJAMIN BROWN, of Stapleton, in the county of Richmond and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Protector in Tapping Barrels, which invention is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 represents a sectional side view of my protector as applied to a tap in the action of tapping a barrel. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section of my protector detached on a' larger scale than the previous figure.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in a flanged tubular nipple, made of india rubber or other elastic material, and fittingthe tapering shank of a tap, so that during the action of driving the tap into the tap-hole of a keg or barrel, the face of the protector is pressed up tight against theouter surface of the barrel-head, and the liquid contained in the barrel is pre vented from escaping.
1n the drawing, the letter A designates my protector, which is made with a tapering bore to fit the shank of a tap, B, and which is provided on its inner edge with a projecting flange, a, so that the area of its face is increased.
In tapping kegs or barrels, particularly such containing an efl'ervescent liquid, the shank of taphole, and by a few smart blows with a culty I have overcome by my protector. Be-
fore driving the tap into the tap-hole I adjust said protector on the end of the shank of the tap, and as the tap is driven home into the tap-hole, the face of the protector bears against the outer surface of the barrel head, and thereby the liquid contained in the barrel is efi'ectually prevented from escaping during the operation of tapping.
My protectors are manufactured in various sizes to fit the shanks of difterent-sized taps.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As a new article of manufacture, a tappingprotector made in the formof a hollow flanged nipple, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 15th day of March, 1876.
