IMPROVEMENT IN REFRlGERATOR-BARRELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,094, dated May 30, 1876; application filed May 2, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, ROBERT C. ARMSTRONG, of Alexandria, in the county of Alexandria and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Refrigerator-Barproper refrigerating materials, inclosed by an outer barrel sufiicientlyplarge to afi'ordintermediate spacefor holding non-conducting material, the inner barrel being provided with an outlet-tube communicating with the open air, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the barrel in condition for shipping; Fig. 2, a central vertical sectional elevation, and Figs. 3 and 4 partial views of the barrel-heads and outlet-tube enlarged.
To enable others skilled inthe art to make and use my invention, 1 will now proceed to describe fully its construction and manner of operation.
A represents the inner barrel, which may be constructed, of course, of any proper size and suitable material. B represents the outer barrel, which exceeds the inner in size sufficiently to afford proper space for holding non-conductin g material, as shown, sawdust being preferred. O'represents an outlet-tube, opening at one end into the interior spaoeof the inner barrel, and at the other into the open air, as shown, it being held in place by suitable perforations in the heads of the barrels, and also by the flange c, which is nailed or otherwise properly secured to one of the heads, as shown. i

Some of the advantages arising from the.
use of this invention are as follows: A cheap package is furnished, by means of which fish can be transported long distances in warm weather without danger of spoiling. The outlet-tube, being always open, permits any gases that may form to escape, andi'urnishes also a means for discharging the water resulting from the melting of the ice. The sawdust in the intermediate space absorbs the water escaping from the inner barrel, and prevents other packages in transit with it from being injured by its outflow.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is a A transportationrpackage for fish, consisting of an inner andouter barrel, intermediate packing, and a single outlet-tube, the whole' constructed as described.
