UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR WHITE, OF DERBY LINE, VERMONT.
IMPROVEM ENT IN BUTTER-PACKAGES.
Specification forming part of LettersiPatent No. 218,609, dated August 12, 1879; application filed July 11, 1879.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ARTHUR WHITE, of Derby Line, in the county of Orleans and State of Vermont, haveinvented ,a new and Improved Butter-Package, of which the following is a specification.
Figure l is a vertical section of the package. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the inner side of one of the heads of the outer case.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved butter-package which shall be so constructed as to keep the butter sweet and pure for any desired length of time, and which at the same time can be conveniently transported.
The invention consists in the combination of the outer case, formed of the staves, the hoops, the lower stationary head, having grooves upon its innersurface, and the upper stationary head, having grooves upon its inner surface, and provided with a bung-hole and a bung, and the inner case, formed of the veneer body the spiral hoop, the loose veneer lower head, and the loose vencerupper head, having a hole formed, or partly formed, through it, with each other, as hereinafter fully described.
The outer case of the package is made tapering, or in the form of a frustum of a cone, and is formed of staves A, held together by hoops B, and the larger lower head, 0, and the smaller upper head, D.
The edges of the heads 0 D are inserted in grooves in the staves A in the same way as the heads of barrels. the heads 0 D have grooves o d formed in them, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the upper head, D, has a bung-hole, d formed in it. The inner case is made of the same shape as the outer case, and of such a size as to. fit
into the said outer case. The inner case is formed of a veneerbody, E, surrounded with a hoop, F, passing around it spirally, and secured to it by tacks made :of zinc or other material that will not corrode. The lower edge of the veneer body E rests upon the veneer head G, which is laid upon the inner'surface of the head 0.
Upon the upper end of the veneer body E The inner surfaces of is placed the upper veneer head, H. The veneer-heads G H are made of such a size as to be kept in place by the outer case. In the upper head, H, directly beneath the bung-hole d is formed, or partly formed, a hole, h, so that the butter may be tried through the said bun g-hole. The bung-hole d is closed with a bung, d
In filling the package it is turned bottom or larger end upward, the hoops B are loosened, the heads G G are taken out, and the inner case is packed full of butter. The heads G.G are then put in, the package is inverted, and the hoops B are driven tight. The bung d is then taken out, and brine is poured in through the bung-hole 01 until the space between the outer and inner cases is entirely filled, the grooves in the heads 0 D and the channel between the coils of the spiral hoop, F allowing the brine to pass freely to all parts of the space between the two cases. The bung d is then driven in tight, and the package is ready for storage or transportation. 7
With this construction the thin inner ease quickly becomes saturated with brine, so that it will not afiect the butter, and the butter will be kept sweet for any desired length of time.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the outer case, in form of a frustum of a cone, made of the staves A, the hoops B, the lower stationary head, 0, having grooves 0 upon its inner surface, and the upper stationary head, D, having grooves 07. upon its inner surface, and'provided with a bung-hole, d and a bung, d, and the inner case formed of the veneer body E, the spiral hoop 'F, the loose veneer lower head, G, and the loose veneer upper head, H, having a hole, h, formed, or partly formed, through it, with each other, substantially as herein shown and described.
