Definitions
- My invention relates to garters or hose supporters, more especially such as are adapted to support the leg portion of socks and which comprise a continuous strip of elastic webbing and a self-securing clasp. It is an object of my invention to provide a garter of this kind, which is distinguished by siniplicity of construction, by cheapness, and by the ease with which it can be adjusted by the wearer and the strip of webbing replaced.
- My new and improved garter offers finally the special advantage, that the adjustment to the desired length'may be done without the necessity of overcoming friction resistance orother resistances by passing the ribbon straight-way through a closed slot in the clamping device, and that after finishing the adjustment the ribbon may be fixed against any further undesired sliding in a most easy way bya small movement of the free end of the ribbon.
- Figure 1 is a front view of the clasp
- Figures 2 and 3 are a front view and a side view respectively of a soft, pliable member cooperating with the clasp in securing the strip of webbing inposition
- Figures 4 and 5 are a side view and a front view, respectively, of the several parts formin the garter, as assembled;
- Figure 6 is a perspective view showing how the new garter may be used as a ring shaped garter encircling the leg.
- the new garter comprises a strip of webbing 1c, preferably elastic, and two clasps, one at each end of the strip is, each being formed of a rigid plate a (Fig. 1), and a pliable plate 9 (Figs. 2 and
- the rigid plate 0 may be made of metal, celluloid or some other suitable, substantially rigid, material. It has the form of an oblong tongue presenting a keyhole-shaped aperture. This aperture extends substantially from one end to about the middle of the platea. Between it and the other end of the plate'is formed a transverse slot (Z having a; length and widthsubstantially equalling the width and thickness of the strip of webbing 7a to be held therein.
- the end of the plate a adjoining the slot d is formed into a pair of inwardly directed hooks f.
- the distance between the base portions of these hooks is substantially equal, the distance between their free inner ends slightly inferior, to the width of the strip, whereby the strip of webbing,;on being placed withits lateral portions upon the hooks, will under the action of a slight] pull slip in of itself, the lateral portions giving way in a resilient manner and after having overcome the resistance offered by the inner ends of the hooks, returning to their normal position automatically.
- Fig. 5 shows the strip of-webbing in position in the indenture e.
- the strip of'webbing being passed first through the slotd and its free end introduced into the notch between the hooks and is doubled up so as to extend in parallel to the plate a. If now a pull is exerted on the main portion of the strip, it will apply itself against that part of this portion which is acted upon by the hook-shaped projections f, f and will create strong friction between this part and the said projections, thereby counteracting any tendency of slipping and firmly locking the strip in the plate.
- the strip can be unlocked and readjusted by the wearer with the greatest ease by merely pulling the free end of the strip into a position at right angles to the plate, thereby causing the lateral portions of the strip in contact with the projections f to double up and slip past these projections and to escape from the notch altogether.
- the strip can easily be adjusted relative to the plate a by pulling at one end or the other, and can belocked anew in its readjusted position by once more placing the free end across the notch and causing it to enter same.
- the locking of the strip in the plate a is assisted by the pliable plate g, and which is attached to the plate a by means of a thread passed through registering holes n, n in the plates or and g.
- the pliable plate 9 has formed therein a transverse slot 71 registering, when the plate is fixed in position, with the slot 03 in plate a, and the strip of webbing 7a is made to pass through both these slots and I v a on being doubled up, as shown in Fig.
- the free-end of the pli able plateg carries-a knob h adapted-to be introduced the wider I part of the keyhole-shaped aperture 6 and to slip into the narrower part thereof, gripping in a well known manner between-it and the plate the marginal portion of the sock or other garment to be supported.
- the plate a at the other end of the strip is formed without the notch and hooks, the strip of webbing being permanently held in the closed slot of the plate by its end being thickened in some suitable manner, as shown at 0, so as to be unable to'escape from the slot.
- the other end can be thickened in a similar manner, as-shown at m.
- Agarter comprising a. strip of webbing, a substantially rigid slotted member engaging said strip for free sliding movement thereon, a transverse bar bordering the slot in said member and a pair of inwardly directed hooks surmounting the ends of said bar, a pliable member associated with the slot in said rigid member, so as to brake the sliding movement of said member relative to said strip, the free end of said strip being engaged by said hooks and the free edge of said pliable member beingarranged to force said free end against said hooks.
- a clasp comp intermediate their ends, said: plates having transverse slots forwardly of said securing means, one of said plates being of rigid ma terial and having rearwardl-y and inwardly extending fingers formingan open slet there:
- a clasp comprising a pair of platessecure'd together intermediate their ends, said plates being provided-- 'vrith substantially registering slots, one :of said plates being of rigid material and having-rearwardly and inwardly extending fingers "forming an open slot therebe'hind, the other of said plates being of softmaterial and having an extended portion projecting beneath isaid open slot, an elastic strip of Webbing "the width of which substantially equals the mentioned slots and said open slot, the distance between the ends of said fingers being length of said slots looped through said first 1 such with relation tothe width of the strip that the strip may be sprung between them without material longitudinal creasing, and
