Description

Nov. 4 1930.
E. N. BASS ET'T COMPACT Filed July 1, 1929 Patented Nov. 4, 1930 UNITED' STATES PATENT OFFICE EDWARD W. BASSETT, OF TOLEDO, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE GELMA COMPANY, .OF
TOLEDO, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF QI-IIO COMPACT Application filed. July 1,
This invention relates to a compact or vanity case having a compartment adapted to contain a small amount of powder, a second compartment adaptedto contain a powder pufl, and a flexible perforated partition constituting the means for separating the two compartments.
The object of the present invention is to provide a compact of this type in which the construction is so simplified that practically all of the steps in the manufacture of the same may be performed by automatic machines, and consequently its commercial product-ion on'a large scale may be attained at a minimum cost, while at the same time the appearance and usefulness of the finished product is enhanced.
The specific construction of the invention, in its preferred form, will be more particularly explained with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the compact in open position, with a portion of the partition broken away. a
Figure 2 is a vertical section taken on the line 22 of Figure 1.
As shown in the drawings, the compact comprises a lower casing member 5 and an upper casing member 6 connected by a hinge 7 and provided with cooperating latch mem-' bers 8 and 9 respectively. The lower casing member 5 holds a circular container 10, which is preferably formed of sheet metal and has its rim secured in a retaining member or frame 11 which is secured within the casing member 5 by any suitable means. The bottom 12 of the container 10 is drawn clownwardly to form a circular space which receives powder, leaving a peripheral annular platform or shelf 13 which is connected to the bottom by a shoulder 14.
A flexible diaphram or partition 15 preferably of celluloid or similar material is adapted to rest on the platform or shelf 13, the flexible partition preferably being faced with a border 16 of felt or the like. The partition 15 is provided with suitable openings 17 through which a small amount of powder may be received from the bottom part of the container 10 upon a powder puff which 1929'. Serial No." 375,186.
is pressed against the partition. The upper part of the container .10 above the partition 15 is of suitable size'to'receive the powder puff when the compact is closed.
The upper casing member 6 is adapted to receive a mirror 18, which may be mounted in a frame 19 of the usual type, which is secured within the casing, the mirror being held in the frame by a suitable pressure member 20. a 1
It will be understood that the various parts of the casing, which are of sheet metal, may
be conveniently made in metal stamping machines, w th a minlmum amount of manual labor. The container 10, including the bottom 12, the raised platform or shelf 13 and the circular wall surrounding the same, may be made from a single piece of metal by a simple stamping operation. The space within the shelf 13 is. large enough to contain a considerable supply of powder and the diaphram or partition 15 insures the economical use of the same without danger of spilling it.
Nhile I have shown and described in considerable detail the preferred construction of a. compact embodying my invention, it is to be understood that this is merely for the purpose of illustration and that the invention includes all such modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is:
A compact comprising an outer casing, a. container formed from a single piece of sheet metal and disposed within said casing, said container having a circular bottom, an annular raised platform extending about said bottom and an upstanding rim at the outer edge of said platform, a frame secured between said rim and the periphery of said casing and having an inner flange drawn over said rim to secure said container in place, and a flexible perforated partition extending across said container and resting on said platform.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name to this specification.
EDWARD W. BASSETT.
