MELVIN W. KNOX, OF SHERIDAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO OLIVER LEE SWIFT, SILVER GREEK, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARPET-STRETCHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,064, dated May 30, 1876 application filed March 24, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MELVIN W. KNOX, of of Sheridan, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have Invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpet- Stretchers, which improvements are fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawlngs.
The object of my invention is to provide the means for reaching as near to the wall or base as possible, and to give a more even Strain to the cross-head on the carpet while stretching it, so as to prevent the tearing or breaking of the same; and it consists in the combination of a serrated or toothed pivoted crosshead with a hooked rack-bar, and a handle and two pawls for operating it, as will be more clearly hereinafter shown; also, the arrangement of the pivoted or vibrating crosshead, forward of the operating mechanism, so as to afford the means for pushing the carpet as near to the wall or base as possible.
