Description

1930- w. BENCZALSKI PENCIL SHARPENER Filed Aug. 10, 1929 iiwezw m M192 &2? 6? Patented Nov. 4, 1930 WOJCIECH BENCZALSKI, OF EUREKA, CALIFORNIA PENCIL SHARPENER Application filed August 10, 1929. Serial No. 384,989.
The present invention relates to pencil Sharpeners, its main object being the provision of a compact device for sharpening penoils.
Another object of the present invention is the provision of a pencil sharpener inclosed within a casing and which may be readily 'insertable or removable therefrom. Y A still further object of the present invention is the provision of a pencil sharpener having a plurality of cutting knives suitably formed and arranged to facilitate easy and prompt action.
A still further object of the present invention is the provision of the device of the characted indicated which may be easily and inexpensively manufactured.
Vith the above general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing forming a part of this application, and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Fig. 1 is a side elevation view in actual size of the device;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal crosssectional view of the device;
Fig. 3 is a transverse cross-sectional view on line 33 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a transverse cross-sectional view on line 44: of Fig. 2;
Fig. 5 is a. transverse cross-sectional view on line 5-5 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 6 is a side elevational view of one of the knives used in connection with the device; and
Fig. 7 is the edge View of the knife.
Referring in detail to the present drawing the device embraces a casing including cuplike section 10 and another bottle-shaped section 11 with constricted neck portion 12. The cup-like section 10, adjacent its edge and outwardly thereof is threaded and similarly the bottle-shaped section 11 at its larger end is inwardly threaded so that the two sections may threadedly connect as at 13.
If desired portions of each of said two sections of the casing may be corrugated as at 14 for the purpose of facilitating manual connection or disconnection of the two sections.
The device further includes a substantial-- ly semi-spherical head or block 15 which is adapted to fit within the bottom of the cupshaped section 10 of the casing wherein the same is frictionally held. Another substantially semi-spherical block 16 is provided, the same being slightly reduced to provide clearance between the same and the bottle-shaped section 11 of the casing so that there may be no interference therebetween during the removal of the bottle shaped section 11 from the cup-shaped section 10. Said outer block 16 at its center is provided with bore 17, which, during the assembled condition of the device remains in alinement with the opening in the neck portion 12 of the casing, permitting easy insertion or withdrawal of the pencil.
The inner block 15 is provided with four slots or grooves 18 which are arranged in crosswise radial formation on transverse plane through the sharpener, as seen on Fig. 3, for receiving therewithin wider ends 19 of knives 20. These grooves 18, however, do not form a true cross, but merely some of their faces form a true cross, the remaining portions of said grooves being off-set in one circular direction, as clearly seen on Figs. 3 and 4. Thus the sharp inner edges of the knives at a point adjacent block 15 meet, as seen on Fig. 3, so that during the sharpening of the pencil the lead portion thereof will have a perfect sharpened point.
As already indicated each of said knives 20 at their inner edges taper outwardly and towards block 16, so that sharp edges 21 thereof are on a conical plane in their operative formation, as seen on Figs. 2 and 5. Furthermore each of said knives 20 is bent on 95 a line from which a wider end 19 projects from the body portion of the knife and they are slightly twisted all in the same direction, so that the edges 21 thereof remain in an oblique relation to the axis of the device. This 100 arran ement adds to the cutting action of each 'fe. The narrower end 22 of each knife is bent on a line from which the same immediately projects from the body portion of the knife in the reverse direction from the bend of the wider end 19 of each knife, and said narrower ends 22 are inserted and frictionally held within grooves 23 which are likewise arranged in cross-wise radial formation in block 16 on transverse plane through the sharpener. These latter grooves 23 remain in an oil-set or staggered relation with res ect to the grooves 18 in block 15, as seen on i 2, due to the fact that each of knives 20 is longitudinally obliquely bent with respect to the axis of the device as hereinabove described.
From the above description it willbe seen that the device herein disclosed is very simple in construction, all of its parts may be readily disassembled, and the knives 20 may be readily separated from their holding blocks 15 and 16 for the purposes of sharpening the same when necessary. The device has a further advantage in that the knives and blocks 15 and 16 are inclosed within a casing so that pencil shavings collect within the casing, and when required the same may be readily removed on disconnection of the two sections of said casing.
While there is described herein a preferred embodiment of the present invention it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim as new is:
1. A pencil sharpener comprising a pair of blocks, a plurality of knives mounted by their edges in said blocks, one of said blocks having a central bore for inserting a pencil therethrough, said knives, at their inner sharp edges tapering toward said last mentioned block, the body portions of said knives remaining in an oblique position relative to the longitudinal axis of the sharpener.
2. A pencil sharpener comprising a pair of blocks, a plurality of knives mounted by their ends in said blocks, said knives being in substantial radial arrangement on transverse plane through the sharpener, the inner cutting edges of said knives being longitudinally tapered, a casing enclosing said blocks and said knives, one of said blocks being in frictional engagement with the casing, the other of said blocks having a bore, the end of said casing adjacent said last named block being constricted and elongated for effecting a tubular extension, said extension being in alinement with the bore in the last named block for providing a communication with the inner sharp tapering edges of said knives.
3. A pencil sharpener comprising a pair of blocks, a plurality of knives mounted by their ends in said blocks, said knives being in substantial radial arrangement on transverse plane through the sharener, the inner cutting edges of said knives eing longitudinally tapered, a casing enclosing said blocks and said knives, one of said blocks being in frictional engagement with the casing, the other of said blocks having a central bore, the end of said casing adjacent said last named being constricted and elongated for effecting a tubular extension, said extension being in alinement with the bore in the last named block for providing a communication with the inner sharp tapering edges of said knives, said casing being made of two disengageable sections.
4. A pencil sharpener comprising a pair of blocks, and a plurality of knives, each of said blocks being provided with a number of grooves corresponding to the number of said knives, said grooves in each of said blocks being arranged in radial formation with respect to each of said blocks and being substantially at right angles with respect to each other, the grooves in one of said blocks being in an ofl-set staggered relation with the grooves in the other of said blocks, said knives being mounted at their ends within the grooves in the two blocks. I
5. A pencil sharpener comprising a pair of blocks, and a plurality of knives, each of said blocks being provided with a number of grooves corresponding to the number of said knives, said grooves in each of said blocks being arranged in radial formation with respect to each of said blocks and being substantially at right 'angles with respect to each other, the grooves in one of said blocks being in an off-set staggered relation with the grooves in the other of said blocks, said knives being mounted at their ends within the grooves in the two blocks, the inner cutting edges of said knives being longitudinally tapered, one of said blocks having a central opening providing a communication with said cutting edges of said knives.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
WOJCIECH BENC ZAIJSKI.
