Description

F. A. HAHN WASHING DEVICE Nbv. 4, 1930.
Filed Jill 19, 1929 INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented i Nov. 4, 1930 FRED A. HAHN, or EAST ,MOLINE, ILnInoIs WASHING DEVICE f Application filed July 19,
The object of this,.my present invention, is the provision of a simple, cheap but thoroughly effective device for washing finelingerie, curtains, sheer silk hosiery and the like in a thorough and efficient manner and without danger ofinflicting injury thereto.
A further object is the provision of a washing device for this purpose that includes a compressible cup-shaped. member which is preferably of rubber, which has at its top a,
socket for the reception of a handle, its bottom formed with an inwardly extending flange and an outwardly projecting bead and its body,'in a line with thebead provided with acontinuous series of spaced downwardly inclined apertures that afford passages for air, suds and water when the device is operated to produce a suction as well as a soft pounding, action upon the clothes being so washed.
7 To the attainment of theforegoingthe invention consists in the improvement hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a perspective view of .my improvement.
Figure 2 is a substantially central sectional view therethrough.
Figure 3 is a top plan view thereof, the
stick being in section.
In general appearance my improved wash ing device resembles that of an ordinary rubber plunger, the same comprising a cupshaped body 1 of strong but compressible rubber. The body 1 is formed at its top with a central tubular extension in the nature of a socket 2 inwhich is received the stick or handle 3. The body l has the outer surface of its mouth flat and the same is formed 'with an inwardly directedring flange 4 and with an outwardly directed bead 5. The body 1, at its juncture with the bead 5 and the flange 4 is materially thickened to reinforce and strengthen the same, and to render the 3 flat surface of the cup practicallynon-yield.
able. The end of the fiange', however, is of a thickness approximately equalingthat of the rubber body andis susceptibleto a slight inward yielding. The body, above the flange V and bead is provided with a series of annuimprovement.

larly arranged spaced openings 7 and the walls provided by these openings are inclined downwardly.
Theimprovement it will be notedincludes no metal parts, and the top proper 01' the cup-like body 1 is closed to provide a wall which limits the movement of the pounding stick in the socket. The compressible socket will effectively hold the stick therein. The device is operated by a slight pounding and compression. This will create a suction which will partly draw the clothes into the cup and which will also force the water and suds through the angularly arranged openings 7 and Will likewiseeject air through the The suds and air, together with the suction created by the compression of the member 1 on the clothes will tend to quickly clean the same without liability of injury thereto. By reinforcing and strengthening the mouth of the device t0 render the same practically non-yieldablethe body thereof upon the reciprocation of the handle will yield under pressure and expandwhen such pressure is released so that the action of the improvement is similar to that of a flexible piston. By having the openings 7 arranged angularly the water or saponaceous fluid which is sucked into the cup will be forced downwardly therethrough when the body is compressed, so that this fluid will act directly upon the clothes below the device to remove dirt therefromand clean the same in a better and more expeditious manner than were the openings arranged at a right angle with respect to the longitudinal plane of the improvement. The device can inflict no injury to the clothes but'incident to the yieldability to the edge of the flange 4 the flat mouth will firmly engage with the clothesv when the deviceis in operation. The de- Y vice is of an extremely simple nature and will not scratch or mar the finish of porcelain or granite when the same is employed in a wash basins, bath tubs or the like, it,of course,
ployed in any type of container for soapy water and which is large enough to receive 'fine fabric clothes to be washed therein..
Having described the invention, I claim:
- being understood that the device may be em- A washing device for the purpose set forth comprisin a on -shaped body of strong but compressi 1e ru her, said body having the outer surface of its mouth fiat and provided with an inwardly extending flange and an outwardly projecting bead, the body at the juncture of the bead or flange being thickened to render the beaded ortion of the mouth practically non-yielda le and to permit of 10 the inward yieldm of the edge of theflan'ge, said body above the flange and bead being provided with an annular series of openings whose walls are inclined downwardly, and a socket extension formed on the top of the 15 body for the reception of an operating stick.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature;
