IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-COUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,011 dated May 30, 1876; application filed April 7, 1876.
To'all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN WAYTT JONES, of the city ofladucah, county of McOracken, and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Railroad Gar Couplings, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings.
The object of my invention is'to enable those whocouple together the cars of a railroad-train to do the same without the necessity of going between the cars to put in the coupling-pin, as it is now necessary and customary to do, by attaching to any draw-head of ordinary form, as A A, two lugs, E E. To these 'lugs, by a pin, 0, there is attached a rising and falling bar, B, which bar carries the coupling-pin P and the pawl D,'with a notch at f, which pin and pawl move freely upon the pins 0 and O. The car is uncoupled by raising the bar B, by the lip at either end of it,-until the notch of the pawl f, which it carries, is at the level of the rest G, when, by
the action of gravity, the pawl moves forward and rests firmly upon the restbar G. At the same time the pin P is raised, so as to be entirely above and free from link L. The car is then coupled by backing into it another car, with link protruding from draw-head, which link, entering the trumpet-shaped mouth of draw-head, strikes the lower part or foot of the pawl D, tripping it from the rest G, and permitting it, with bar B and the pin 1?, to fall until the bar rests upon theupper side of draw-head, thereby passing the .couplingpin through the link, and automatically coupling the cars.
I claim as my invention- The draw-head A, provided with ears E E, in combination with rising and falling bar B, pivoted pin P, and pawl D, substantially as described.
