This invention relates to the art ofconcrete construction, and more partlcularly to a device for holding a wooden nailing'strip,
or screed, in place during the pouring of the concrete, as in concrete floors, such device being commonly known as a-screed clip.
One of the objects of this invention is" to provide a screed clip which will be strong, simple in construction, economical of manufacture and eflicient in its operation. I
With screed clips as heretofore manufactured, it has been necessary to provide someindependent means for anchoring them in place. A greatmany concrete floors are at present constructed by usingexpanded metal la-thing as a bottom portion of the form, in which'case the screed clips havebeen anchored by'wedges. Another object, therefore, is to provide a screed clip whichmay be securely anchored to such expanded ing without the use of any independent an-. cho'ring means. I"
Screed clips as constructed at the present time are of sheetmetal, the tions materially obstructing the flow of the concrete in pouring, requiring careful super-f vision and additional labor-in securely tamping the concrete around the clip.
A further object, therefore, is to provide a screed clip that will-not obstruct the fiow of' the concrete when being poured.
' Further ob ects will accompanyingdrawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a nection with a straight-edge; and
Figure 6 is a sectional View of a finished floor.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates the upright portions of such a screed clip, 2 designates the base and 3 the horizontal supporting portion.
metal lath sheet metal por-- appear from the die-.- tail description taken in connection with the After the screed is ,in
The screed clip s constructed of one continuous pieceof bar metal, preferably of circular cross section. In forming such a screed-clip from a straight filar bar, at a distance from one end alittle greater than the heightof the upright portion, the baris bent at aright angl at the point 4; at a eistance therefrom equalvto one-half the length ofthebase, and at point 5 the bar is bent back upon itself, the two lengths of wire lying side by side in a hori zontal plane;
to the length of the base, at point 6, the .bar
is again bent. back upon itself to points, where it is-again bent at right angles end portion of the upright portion to the height atfwhich.
following the previously formed the screed is .to be held, point 7 therethe aris bent forming thehorizon-tal support, ing portion 3, equal in length to the width of the screed, PGI'PQHCllCHlELI to the plane of the previously formed portion and ending at point 8 from thencethe bar is bent to form the other u right portion and base in the same manner as'previously described with respect to the first, but jnireverseorder of operation. At points for 8, the. joints may. be welded togetl1er,-thus giving greater rigidity to the structure. The endsof'the uprights 1 are bentover, as shown at 10;
The form of the base is such that'theends thereof may be tucked into the folds of exat a distance therefrom equal panded metal lathing, as shown in Figures.
'2 andB, it being obvious when thus placed.
it willbeheld securelyin position; The
screed'9 is sprungin between the upright-1V horizontal portion place, the portion 10 and placed upon the may be driven into the screed to securely "hold it in position, a' slight blow of a hammer serving to iimbedsuch portion "10 Pin the screed, thus securely fastening the screed'in place,"eliminating the use of nailsor other additionalor independent means of fastening. The screed clip is constructed so that the height of the horizontal portion 3, plus the thickness of the the thickness of the concrete .Eto be poured. Thus, when the concrete'is poured, the top of thescreedis level with the top oflthe concrete.
screed, willcbe equal to slab. Ifa space is to be left between the slab and the floor, the straight-edge is notched,
as shown in Figure 5. If the flooris to rest directly on the slab, no notch is used. The
flooring 15 is nailed directly to the screed in either case.
It will thus be seen that the invention accomplishes'its objects. It is economical in construction since it uses stock bar metal and there is no waste in cutting; moreover, the method of manufacture is simple and inexpensive, and resulting in a rigid structure. The form of the base is such that the ends thereof may readily be tucked into the folds of expanded metal lathing forming the bottom of the form, without the use of any independent anchoring means, such as ties or Wedges. Y The scant s'keleton 'form' of amount of labor and supervision necessary in pouring astructure using such a screed clip and insuring perfect envelopment of the screed by the concrete. The clip thereby becomes inreality a reinforcing member adding to rather than detracting from the strength of the completed concrete structure. The bent over portion atthe top of the clip holds the screed in place, eliminating the use of separate fasteners.
In the construction of this clip it is to be noted'that a filar bar of metal is used,-such as a wire or narrow strip as distinguished from a broad sheet or plate. The advantage of this construction is that the filar bars do not obstruct the flow of concrete around them and the difficulty of having vacant spaces in the finished slab due to' obstruction of the flow byparts of the clip is overcome. Also the narrow bar makes narrow toes 6 which are easily inserted into the meshes of metal lath and the like. i
and
p the clip] affords very little resistance ,to the'flow of the concrete in pouring, thereby reducing the 4. ' 5. A screed clip having upright portions, base portions extending in opposite directions from each of said upright portions, and a horizontal portion constructed of bar metal, said horizontalportion being secured to said upright portions at the points of-intersection.
6. A screed clip of filar bar metal having upright portions formed with inturned ends adapted to be embedded in the screed, thereby to retainsaid screed against movement.
Y '7. A screed clip of filar bar metal comprising an upright portion, base members extending outwardly therefrom, and adapted for insertion in the'mesh of expanded metal bending an end of said clip, said member lath, and a screed supportmounted upon and adapted to embrace the screed, and said end adapted to be embedded in the screed.
9. A screed clip of filar bariron having base portions extending forwardly and rearwardly and formed of a portion of the bar bent back upon itself, a transverse support formed of the middle portion of the bar bent upwardly from'said base portions, and upright securing elements formed of the ends of the bar extending upwardly from said base portions and turned inwardly to form prongs to be imbedded in the screed.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature this 11th day of March, 1927.
.. THOMAS A. LUCY.
It is obvious that various changes may be made within the scope of 'the'appended' claims in the details of construction without departing from thespirit'of this invention; it is to be understood, therefore, that this invention is not limited to the specific details shown and described. 7
