This invention relates to luminous advertising devices and proposes a device of this type which may be used at the same time for advertising purposes and for. the display both by day and night of trafiic signs, street markings and other indicia.
An object ofthe invention is to provide for the display of legends or other indicia which maybe easily read in more thanone direction; and further the invention contemplates a number of separate slgn-carrying units having one common source of illumination which may be employed for a variety of display indications 7 Another object of the invention is to provide means which will facilitate the installation and removal of the display screens,
and at the same time permit ready access to the illuminating chamber for the purpose 2 of making repairs and replacements.
Theinvention has been'illustrated in the accompanying drawings showing one preferred embodiment thereof, and in which Fig. 1 is a front elevation of the whole de- 2 vice; i
Fig. 2 is a section through the upper part,
or screen frame, with parts removed to clearly show the interior thereof;
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the ring member supporting the transparent screen;
Fig. 1 is a similar view of the ring member designed to secure the screen in position on its supporting ring; and
Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view of the upper portion of the device, showing one complete side thereof.
In these drawings, similar parts have been designated by like characters of reference throughout the several views.
The unit according to the invention comprises a standard or foot 1 of any approved shape and size, on the upper portion of which is secured a frame 2 preferably of oval form. This frame is of hollow formation in its vertical cross-section, so as to allow for the necessary space for accommodation of the internal illuminating devices, preferably electric lamps, and forms withv each' of its two sides a ring support for securing thereto 0 one of the two screens bearing the legends or? imagesffor advertising-purposes. The
upper portion :ofthe said frame-" 2 is -pro vided with cut-away portions facing in both 'direotions and adapted to contain there in plates of glass or other transparent material, whichimay bear .insc'riptions'or legends relating toitrafiic orother conditions. At the upper portion .of -the standard 1, at positions corresponding; thejfrfont and-{rear of the frame 2, there is provided a-further cutawayxportion 1510f :cirou'lar form which also 2 Y may be, provided with a transparentplate bearing Y inscriptions; A t any "convenient position of the standard 1 :there may be provided; a cover orilid-gi.v giaoces'sto electrical connections::orwstlieliir The framerQ i's'pro, ided at each of-lits' sides with: a. ring memiberwfi secured- :thereto by means of iscrews oirathedike, and -the 'holes 7,- and at its'i-nner' peri:pheny1th e rin'gmemb'er 6' is formed with a recess 8 for accommodationof the glass, :or other, 's creen" bearing the advertising. matter; J The screen 19 is secured in position by means of a further ring member or keeper 10 which is inserted behind the projections 11, 11 of the standard 1, and fixed to the ring member 6 by means of a screw or the like and the hole 12. At the inner side of the frame 2 there are disposed the lamp-sockets 13 and electric lamps 14, which provide for, .or constitute, the internal light source for illuminating the device atni'ghttime.
In practice, after removing the ring member or keeper 10, the screen or transparent plate 9 may be easily withdrawn and substituted by another one bearing different legends securing again the ring member 10 to the latter in the manner described. The screen 9, as
or inscriptions which, then, is secured in place superimposed on the ring member 6 and nature so that the internal light source will clearly display to the public any, description or legend thereon provided.
Having thus fully described m and invention, what I claim and desire'to" sec Letters Patent is 1 i 1. An advertising device comprising an: annular illuminating chamber formed to provide viewing apertures in each face of said chamber, a supporting standard for the chamber carrying spaced lugs adjacent the point of attachment to said chamber, a. plurality of 6 lamps lying wholly within the chamber, a
ring and chamber, a display screen to fit the 7 ring member provided with a circumferential inner groove and adaptedto fit each aperture of said'chamber,'means for attaching said groove of each ring, a detachable keeper for each screen having one portion of its edge-in serted beneath the aforesaid lugs andmeans coacting with said "lugs forclam i each, ;v 7 screen in position relatively. to it i; i
ring.
1 2. An advertising device comprising an Y annular illuminating chamberyformed with cut-away portions in each face to provide viewing apertures in said chamber, a'supporting standard for the chamberhaving spaced lugs adjacent the point of attachment to said chamber, a. plurality of lamps lying wholly within the permanently enclosed portion'of the chamber, a ring formed with a circumferential inner groove, said ring being secured v to the'said chamber and having its inner edge substantiallycoeextensive with each aperture, 7 i i' means for attachingflsaid ring on each face of said chamber, a translucent display screen adapted to fit the groove of said ring, a detachable keeper adapted'to overlie each screen, said keeperbeing secured at one edge in the aforesaid lugs and means at its opposite edge co-active with said lugs for clamping eachscreen between its respective ring and keeper.
