The present invention relates to a register such as is used in telegraphy for printing code characters. It is especially adaptable to fire alarm telegraphy wherein the signals in code are printed upon a strip of paper. The objects of this invention are to provide a register having any or all of the following features: means to print on a tape the code characters including an inked ribbon and type impression bar; novel means to operate theV impression bar; and novel meansl to advance the inked ribbon.
An embodiment illustrative vof the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
F ig. 1 is a side elevation ofa register with the operating parts within the casing shown indotted lines; and Fig. 2 is an end elevation `of the register.
Referring with more particularity to the drawing, a code register'is shown adapted to be connected in the electrical sending circuit over which telegraphic impulses are sent. As is well known in fire alarm telegraphy, impulses are sent intermittently, the periods between impulses determining the code characters. The present invention relates to the printing mechanism, and only that portion of the register pertinent to the present invention is disclosed. The register comprises a casing 5 which houses a spring motor, not shown, except for a drive shaft for advancing the paper tape. This shaft is marked 6 and secured thereto is a toothed drive wheel 7. Mounted upon :the casing' is a reel 8 for receiving a roll 9 of tape, a web being marked 10. The web is guided over an idler 11 along one side of the casing and over ashelf 12 supported by a suitable bracket 13. yMounted uponthe side of the casing is a lever arm la carrying a pressure roller 15 which is urged toward vthe toothed roller 7 by means of a tension spring 16 secured at one end to the lever 14. The other end ofthe tension spring is wrapped around an adjustment drum 17 1929. Serial No. 364,719.
So that by turning the drum, the tension upon the spring may be adjusted. kThe toothed wheel 7 is advanced intermittently by means of clock mechanism and thereby advances the web of paper. Secured to the casing and above the web of paper is a plate 18 having journalled thereon spools 19n and 19h. One spool serves as a take-up spool for an inked ribbon and the other as a feed spool, their functions being alternative so as toreverse the travel of the ribbon when the latter has been unwound from the spool serving as the feed spool. A ribbon 2O is passed downwardly over idlers 21 and 22 so that there is a bightof the ribbon passing parallel to the web. On the shaft 6 is a cam 23. Cam 23 has a high spot which engages a lever 24 pivoted on the casing and providing a cam follower having a post 25 with a roller at the upper end. The roller engages a lever 26 pivoted on plate 18 and having at the end a double pawl 27. The pawl has a slot in which is. disposed a pin 28 mounted ony an arm 29 secured to a shaft 30 so that by swinging ythe arm to one side or the other, the pawl 27 may be disposed to engage either a ratchet wheel on spool 19a or a ratchet wheel on spool 19D. Rotation of the toothed wheel 7 will cause the follower to be lifted and the pawl to be advanced, thereby turning the spool with whose ratchet wheel the pawl is engaged.
Secured to the plate 18 is an anvil 31 having a type member provided on its face opposing the ribbon with a type character such as may be suitable for impression upon the strip of paper. Pivotally mounted upon the casing 5 at 32 is an impression bar 88 having a platen head 34 opposed to the type member and between which and the type member the ribbon and strip of paper passes. Impression arm 33 is fixed to a shaft which is journalled in the casing and secured to the shaft is a tappet arm A tension spring tends to hold the impression bar with the platen against Y stripiofpaper. An armature lever 37 is arm constitute a negative tappet device which when the electromagnets are energized pull the armature downwardly and cause the impression arm to be moved downwardly away .from the paper, the spring 36 returning the impressionV arm so as to strike the paper and cause an impression to be imade by the type member 31. A limit post l1 acts as a stop for the upward movementof the armature lever,-
while an abutment 42 engaging a threaded pin 43 mounted in a post 44 on the casingdetenV S mines the eXtreme upper position of the impression lever. 'lhe latter adjustment pro-V vides 4foruadjusting the magnitude-of the impact of the platen.
VAsithe lelectrical impulses are received, the
;;` clockwork is set in motion to cause the toothed drive wheel Tito rotate advancing lthe paper. The cam 6 causes the pawl to intermittently .rotate the take-up spool and move the inked ribbon. At each impulse, the armature lever ,f 1 37 is drawn toward the electromagnets 39 and through the tappet device lthe Y impression lever isswung to retracted position; `VVhat lclaim is :--V
