Patented Oct. 14, 1930 i FRED CARROLL, OF YONKERS, NEW YORK I MACHINE FOR OPERATING UPON WEBLIKE MATERIAL F FICE Application filed June 15, 1925, Serial No. 37,015, and in Germany November 24, 1922.
This invention relates to printing machines, and is in part a continuation of my application upon tabulating card printer, Serial No. 552,654, filed April 14,. 1922,
which has resulted in Patent No. 1,563,014, Nov. 24, 1925, and which relates to card printing machines and, from a still more specific aspect, relates to machines for printing tabulating cards, i. e., cards to be printed and employed in connection with tabulating machines of the general type illustrated in the United States Patent N 0. 1,087,061, 'February 10, 1914, H. Hollerith, and numerous other patents. l One of the principal objects of the invention set forth in my aforesaid Patent No. 1,-
563,014 is to provide a printing machine of increased efliciency and economy and adapted to receive blank material and to discharge accurately. printed cards, of accurate size and shape.
An object of the present invention is to provide improved means for severing a continuous web of material into smaller units accurately and without interruption of the continuous feeding of the material, a provision which is of notable utility when embodied in the structure of arotary print ing machine of the type forming the subject-matter of my aforesaidap'plication, in which certain of the features of the present application are set forth with sufficient clearness to permit their embodiment in rotary printing machines by those skilled in the art, but as these and other desirable portions of my invention are of equal utility for employment in other fields, my present application illustrates and sets them forth in somewhat greater detail, and they are herein claimed in this broader aspect of their more general utility.
Another object of the present application is to provide improved means adapted to re- 5 ceive cards and including shearing devices for severing a cornerfrom each card, and means for holding each such severed cornerupon I one of said shearing devices where it is clear of the remaining card material.
Referring to the drawings which illustrate what I now consider a preferred form of .machine:
Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view of a portion of a machine of the type shown in my aforesaid application of which this application is a continuation in part.
Fig. 2 is a View in diagonal section, on an enlarged scale, taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.

Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail sectional view of therotary platen and severing mechanism. shown in Fig. 1; Figs. 5, 6 and 7 being views in the same vertical plane as Fig. 4, showing the parts in various positions of their cycle of operation.
Fig. 8 is a fragmentary detail view of the rolls for severing a corner from the cards.
Fig. 9-is a sectional view on the line 9-9 of Fig. 10.
Fig. 10 is a longitudinal sectional view of the rotary dies shown in Fig. 8.

wedge 5.
In the rotary printing machine illustrated, the arcuate portion 2 is constituted by a rotatable cylindrical platen, and three shear members 3 are shown, spaced at equal circumferential distances, so that as this rotary platen turns upon its shaft 6, equal portions of the Web lV are measured off serially for severance and each such portion is severed in turn by a suitable reciprocal shear member 7, cooperating with that member of the series of platen-carried shear members 3 which is then presented inappropriate juxtaposition for the shearing operation.
. In pursuance of the invention, the shear member 7 is moved into engagement with each shear member 3 successively as the latter arrives at the shearing position, to effect severance of the webyand at the same time the member 7 is given a mov'ement'of translation around the arcuate surface 2 in a curved path conforming thereto, so that the severance is accomplished without interrupting the continuous feeding of the web W forward around thearcuate surface.
In accordance with an important object of the invention, this forward feeding in regular progression is effected or facilitated by a device which provides also means 8 for engaging the web're'currently at the parts w thereof which become successively the leading end after severance, and the holding means holds each such part in close juxtaposition with the platen for severance, and therafter prevents escape of the aforesaid leading end w while permitting free withdrawal of the card or unit to which has been divided from the web.
The shear 7 and the holding member.8 are withdrawn successively from severing and binding action and are retracted automatically together into position for recurrent performance of the holding and severing operations upon succeeding sections of the webW, this transference of the members 7 and 8 being accomplished recurrently by any suitable means, while the forward feeding of the web NV, thus cleared, continues, under operation of feeding devices the preferred form of which will bedescribed briefly here- I inafter, inasmuch as a more detailed description thereof will be found upon reference to my aforesaid Patent No. 1,563,014. in a rotary printing machine of the type illustrated, or in machines of like character, the
operating parts are desirably organized in conjunction with the shaft 6 of the rotary platen, which is shown in Fig. 11 as having a worm-gear 9 in mesh with a Worm 10 on a shaft 11 coupled at 12' to the shaft 13 of anelectric motor 14, by which the platen is rotated continu'ouslyin the direction of the arfow X, Fig. 4.
Also mounted on the shaft 6 is a sleeve 16 having eccentrics 17 and 18 fast thereon, and a gear 19 forming part of a chain of gears 19, 20, 21, 22 and 23, actuated by the shaft 6;
and upon the eccentrics are straps 24 formed as part of a frame 25 which has one lever arm forked at 26 to receive a block 27 on a stud 28 mounted on the frame part 29, while another arm 30 serves as-the support for the reciprocal shear member 7 and the holding member 8 with their associated parts.
The shear member 7 comprises a long flat blade having end sockets'31 to receive pins 32 seated against. springs 33 in bearings 34 formed on the arm 30, brackets 37 and 38; By
When the severing'mechanism is embodied I withdrawing the pins 32 the shear 7 may be taken out or replaced. It is normally held in its uppermost position (see Figs; 4-7) by the U-shaped spring 35 secured by screws at 36 to the bracket 37 of the lever arm 30; and this bracket and the similar bracket 38 at the other end of arm 30 are provided with sto s 39 to limit the upward swing of the shear and the shear slots 4 in-platen 1 have beveled walls. 41 to aid in securing firm shearing contact between the shear 7 and shears 3.
The holding member 8 preferably takes the form of a U-shaped clip embracing the shear member 7 and sharing its rocking movements around the pivots 32, but capable of independent sliding movement, having a forward abutment portion '42 adapted to be held toward the arcuate surface 2 'of the platen l in position to bind the web VJ directly adjacent to the shear 3, this binding engagement being-of a? yielding character, under the action 9f a leaf spring 43 seated at 44 on the brackets 37 and 38 (see Fig. 2). a
For the sake of clearness, the web does not appear in Figs. 2, 4, 5, 6, and 7, but is shown clearly in Fig. 1, which illustratesthe parts at the completion of a severing operation with the rotary platen 1 running forward continuously. The web W is derived from any suitable source, such as the roll excess of the peripheral speed of the rotary platen, the rolls being spaced to permit slip in feeding, so as to avoid over-running, and t the machine illustrated is provided with a printing roll 54 and suitable inking mechanism 55, which need not be described in detail, except to note that the printing roll preferably cooperates with the platen at a region not far from the point ofseverance.
In operation, as the shaft 6 is rotated by the motor 14 the platen 1 is turned andthe eccentrics 17 x and 18, cooperating with the block 27 in the fork 26, cause the frame 25 to oscillate in an elliptical path which is indicated in dotted lihes in Fig. 5..
In Fig. 4 the parts are shown in detail in the severing position shown in F ig. 1, with the shear 7 at its extreme inward position and the holding member 8 likewise at the inner position of its orbit, having its abutment 42 pressed toward the platen surface 2'in position to bind the leading end ofthe web (not shown) When the eccentrics 17 and 18 have turned into the positionindicated in Fig. 5, the shear 7 has been withdrawn from engagement with the severed end of the web or card, and the abutment 42 of the holding member 8still binds to the platen the leading end of the fresh unsevered portion of web Y which is now being printed-by the printing roller 54.
Atthis phase occurs the delivery of the severed card orunit w to the mechanism shown in Fig. 3, which embodies the portion of this invention relating to the clipping of a corner from the severed card, an operation which will be described duly, after completing the description of the cycle of movement of the movable shear 7 and the holding means 8.
In Fig. 7 the position of the parts is approximately the same as in Fig. 5, but a portion of the holding member 8 is broken away to show the manner in which the shear 7' tilts as the shear 3 continues its movement downward with the platen part 2. By this provision, which the spring permits, any injury of the shear 7 by shear 3 is avoided, and in Fig. 6 the shear 7 is shown as about to come clear of the finger of shear 3, the cutting edge of shear 7 having already left the cutting edge of shear '3, and the holder 8 having likewise been carried back by the movement of arm 25 under the action of eccentrics 17 and 18, so that when the arm 25 starts to move upward in its orbit in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 5 there will be no interference with the leading end of the severed web, which will run down between the shears ready for the holder abutment 42 to enter into binding engagement'w-ith it when the arm 25 has passed the upper extreme of its'orbit and is drawn in toward the platen 2 byaction of the eccentrics 17 and 18,
repeating the phases. of the cycle, in coopera tion with the next member 3 of the series of platen-carried shear members, and with outinterruption in the forward movement of the web W. A
Having thus described the preferred structure of severing mechanism and its operation, it is to be understood that the same may be utilized in any field for which the improvements are adapted by their nature, and the cards or other units severed from the web may be delivered in any suitable manner for use or for further treatment, as for example forseverance by the improved corner-clipping mechanism now to be described.
Before any card has been severed from the remainder of the material its leadingedge will have passed preferably between rollers 57 and 58, being gripped thereby. For reasons hereinafterstated these rollers are preferably so driven and so timed that they will present the same points on their peripheries to any card entering between them as they do to any' other card so entering but their linear peripheral speeds are slightly in excess of that of the drum 1. It will be seen that these two requirements are "not inconsistent and are readily obtainable, the first being a function of angular velocities and the second a function of angular velocities of rolls 57 and 58 and the radii of the latter. I
shall now proceed to describe the driving I means for the rollers 57 and 58, having specific recourse to Figs. 1 and 8 to 11 for this purpose.
The rollers 57 and 58 are each secured to a corresponding one of the shafts 60, 61, suitably journaled in the frameof the machine. Each of the shafts 60, 61 has secured thereto a corresponding one of identical gears 62 and 63 which mesh with each other. The gear 63 meshes also with a suitably journaled idler gear 64: on a shaft 65 which has a gear 66 which in turn meshes with and is driven by the gear 23. The rollers 57 and 58 are preferably provided with card-corner-clip- A plng devices. Before proceeding to describe these devices, I shall describe the means for conveying the cards to the receptacle or tray 71 By inspecting Figs. 1 and 3 it will be seen that thecards passfrom the rollers 57, 58 over a plate 67, suitably secured to the frame of the'mac'hine, and thence between rolls 68 and 69 into suitable stacking mechanism 70 and a tray 71, secured to and carried by the bracket 72. i
As mentioned above, the rollers 57 and 58 are preferably provided with devices for clipping the corners of the cards or card material. One form of such device is illustrated in Figs. 3, 8, 9, and 10 in detail. The roller 58 is there shown provided with an insert 76 of steel or other suitable material and having a raised'portion 77 providing a diagonal cutting edge 78. The roller 57 is provided with an insert 79 having a raised portion 80 and diagonal cutting edge 81 which arecomplementary to the elements 77,
78. The design is such that one of the two trailing corners of each card, entering between the rollers 57, 58, is clipped or sheared off by the cooperating cutting edges 7881. In order to insure that these clippings will not be thrown to such'position as to injure the machine or the cards, I preferably pro vide means for holding each such clipping to one of the rollers 57 58 until it is in proper position to be discharged therefrom. While A now preferred form of such means is il-- lustrated and may be constructed substantially as follows. The shaft of one of the rollers 57, 58, in the present case the shaft 60 of the roller 57, is provided with a duct 82 the shaft 60 and forming therewith a valve.
as clearly indicated in Fig. 3. The member 88 is provided with ducts or passages 89, 90, leading from the ports 86, 87 to upper and lower ends respectively of a cylinder 91 of a pump which is suitably secured to the frame of the machine. It will be seen that when the .parts are in the position shown in Fig. 3, and indeed as long as the port 85 registers with the port87, communication is established between the port 83 and the lower part of the cylinder 91. At this time the insert 79 moves from the position shown in .Fig. 3 to a position below the axis of the roller 57. .When the insert 79 and its port 83 are substantially directly below the axis of the roller 57, communication between the lower part of the cylinder 91 and the said port 83 is cut ofl", and communication between thev upper end of the cylinder and the port 83 is established through the following passages;
898685828483. Mechanism is provided for automatically-causing the pump to create a suction or negative pressure at the port 83 when the ports 8587 are in cormmunication and for providing a positive pressure at the port 83 when the passages 85-86 communicate. I shallwnow proceed to describe the particular form of such mechanism illustrated in the drawings.
The shaft 61 has secured thereto a cam 92 adapted to enga e and operatethe arm 93 of a bell-crank ever pivoted ,at 94 on-the frame of the machine. The other arm 95 of the bell-crank is connected at 96, by a suitable pivotal connection with the piston rod 97 of the pump. The rod 97 is provided with a shoulder portion (Fig. 3) adapted to en gage the lower side of and move the piston ton 98 compresses air in the upper part of the pump cylinder it will be appreclated that -whenthe ports 8586 communicate a blast and into a suitable chute or receptacle 100. w
The above described cycle is repeated as each clipping of the corner of a card is effected.
